Austin Diagnostic Clinic The Austin Diagnostic Clinic, with a new Westlake Location well underway, offers reminder of September National Cholesterol Awareness Month Though construction is still in progress at The Austin Diagnostic Clinic’s (ADC’s) new facility at the Cielo Center in Westlake, the trusted health provider to Austinites for nearly 60 years is wasting no time in reminding the community that September is National Cholesterol Awareness Month. Consider that one out of every two men and one out of every three women will develop heart disease during their lifetime. Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the U.S., with approximately 1.25 million heart attacks occurring annually, and research has clearly shown that lowering one’s cholesterol can directly reduce the risk of developing this condition. Whether you have heart disease already or want to prevent it, now is the time to take charge of your heart health and find ways to lower your cholesterol. A person’s blood cholesterol level is affected not only by what is eaten, but also by how quickly their body makes LDL (bad) cholesterol and disposes of it. The body makes all the cholesterol it needs, and it is not necessary to take any additional cholesterol from the foods one eats. There are many factors that determine whether an individual’s LDL cholesterol is high or low, including heredity, diet, weight, physical activity, age and sex, alcohol consumption and stress. is to encourage people to check their cholesterol level and take the appropriate health care measures if it is high. There are a number of screening tests offered by ADC to measure cholesterol, including the Total Cholesterol Test, Cholesterol Test for Highdensity Lipoproteins and Triglycerides Test. It is also a great time to evaluate one’s diet and lifestyle choices that can be critical to achieving lower cholesterol levels. “High cholesterol doesn’t have symptoms, so many people don’t know that their cholesterol levels are too high,” said Dr. Richard DeBehnke, an Internist who will serve ADC’s Westlake location. “If we can help raise awareness of the simple tests that are available to measure cholesterol levels, and encourage people to take action sooner than later, we have an opportunity to lower the risk of heart disease in our community.” ADC’s 9,000-square-foot Westlake clinic will be located in the Cielo Center at 1250 S. Capitol of Texas Highway, Building 3. It will feature specialty care as well as lab services. Medical specialties at the new location will include Cardiology, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonar y, Rheumatology and Urology. In addition, ADCs Health Risk Management will provide weight loss programs at the Westlake clinic. For more information regarding the new ADC clinic in Westlake, visit www.ADClinic. com/Westlake.

• Lock your door, even when you intend to return home shortly or even if you are just going down the hall. It takes a thief ten seconds or less to enter an open room and steal your property. • Lock or secure doors and windows when you are alone or asleep. • Keep emergency numbers by your phone. • Do not leave messages on your door indicating that you are away and when you will return. • Do not let strangers enter dormitory or premises. • Do not prop open outer doors. • If someone asks to use your phone for an emergency call, offer to telephone for them instead of allowing them access. • Do not put your address on your key ring. • Know your neighbors and neighborhood watch groups (Continued on Page 3) Lost Creek Times - October 2011
