A LONA general association meeting will be held at the Spicewood Springs Branch of the Austin Public Library from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Tuesday, October 18.

Our APD District Representative Office Joe Hebbe will be the speaker.

LONA 2ND ANNUAL HALLOWEEN PARADE,

Saturday, October 29, 4:00 -5:30 PM

Dress-up as your favorite super hero, witch, sandwich, princess, etc. and come join our parade. We will begin near the flagpole at Kathy Caraway Elementary School.

We will parade along the Oak View Park trail and end at the pavilion in Oak View Park. Here we will provide light snacks, lemonade, water, games, coloring, and some surprises!

Last year we had a great turn-out with approximately 100 parents and children. Let’s double this number this year.

Dear Neighbors, Happy Long Awaited And Anticipated Fall! This month I have a few items I want to write about. The first one was mentioned by another board member and I thought it was a good idea to share it with you. The suggestion was made to send a reminder about keeping our trees, bushes and vines trimmed near sidewalks, driveways and street corners for better visibility and safety. With school back in full force, the foot and car traffic has significantly increased in our area and we want to keep everyone safe. One of the city of Austin’s codes relates to tree limbs and requires tree limbs to be at least 14 feet or higher when hanging over a public right of way.

The second item is a reminder to bring donations for the Town Lake Animal Shelter to our neighborhood meeting on October 18th. There is a huge list of items needed on their web site and they accept some items that are “gently used”. Last month’s Dear Neighbors article has a full list of what they need and more details on this as well. If you cannot make the meeting, contact one of the board members and we will make arrangements to get your donation.

The final item is a reminder to make plans to attend our second annual Halloween Parade on October 29th from 4-5:30. See our web site for more details. Last year’s parade was very well attended and everyone had lots of fun. As an adult, I never miss a chance to wear a costume and will be shopping for mine soon. Please mark your calendar and we’ll see you there!

Laurel Oaks Prevention is the Key to Decreasing Oak Wilt Spread

TFS Urges Caution When Selecting and Transporting Oak Firewood Reprinted from a previous newsletter: Texas Forest Service is encouraging Texans to be careful when collecting and purchasing firewood at this time of year. Transporting and storing diseased wood is a known means of spreading the devastating oak wilt fungus to previously uninfected neighborhoods.

Utilizing these prevention steps is the key to safeguarding against spreading the disease through the selection and use of firewood: • Select well-seasoned firewood. Well-seasoned wood is cut before the summer and is typically dry with loose bark and cracked ends.

Avoid oak wood that appears unseasoned, that may have tight bark and cut ends which show no cracks or signs of aging. The extreme heat and drying of a full Texas summer effectively destroys the fungus in cut firewood.

• Safely store unknown sources of firewood. If the oak wood comes from an unknown source and it is not well seasoned, cover the woodpile with a clear piece of plastic. Burying the edges of the plastic will prevent the entry or exit of insects that might have been attracted to diseased wood and fungal mats.

• Avoid wounding oaks during vulnerable seasons. The general recommendation is to avoid injuries to oaks from February through June. The best times for pruning of oaks are during the heat of summer (minimal spore production) or the cold of winter (minimal insect activity).

• Paint all oak wounds including pruning cuts. Throughout the year, immediately apply a thin coat of latex or pruning paint to all fresh wounds and other injuries that expose the inner bark or sapwood of oaks. This prevents contaminated sap beetles from infecting the wound with oak wilt spores.

• Oak firewood is an important commodity to Texans, whether it’s used for firing up the barbecue pit or for warming up the home on a cold winter’s day. By selecting well-seasoned, disease-free firewood and by following other disease prevention guidelines, homeowners are taking the correct steps to prevent a new oak wilt disease outbreak in their neighborhood.

• Destroy diseased red oaks. A knowledgeable arborist or forester should diagnose red oaks (i.e., Spanish, Texas red, blackjack or shumard oak) that die rapidly (2-3 weeks) or in groups (2 or more trees over several years) for oak wilt. Trees suspected to have died recently from oak wilt should be destroyed by burning, burying or chipping. The heat of a fire destroys the fungus and the smoke emitted poses no threat to healthy trees. When planning to do any outdoor burning, be sure you check with local officials to see

Laurel Oaks Solid Waste Services: What Do I Do With…?

Is it just me or are there more squirrels than ever this summer?

And more vultures, too? To that end, I recently had the unfortunate circumstance of needing to dispose of a squirrel we found floating in our blow-up pool. Not a pleasant task, to be sure.

I’d read somewhere that you’re not supposed to put dead animals in your trash bin, so I looked it up online. It turns out that the City of Austin has an A-Z list of how to dispose of various and sundry types of waste and recyclables. For this series of articles, I’ll touch on a few that I found helpful and interesting, beginning with ABC. • First on the list is Aerosol Cans. Did you know that empty aerosol cans can go in your single stream recycling bin? I didn’t know that!

I assumed they had to go in the trash. Not so. Recycle ‘em!

• Aluminum foil, however, should go in the trash bin. Even clean foil (including plates, trays, and cooking ware) is not recycled by the city. However, you can take foil to the folks at Ecology Action: www.ecology-action.org.

• It is okay to put animal waste in your trash bin, but they’d like it sealed in a plastic bag. They ask consumers not to flush kitty litter. The site doesn’t say whether so-called “flushable” litter is okay, but I’ve read elsewhere that it’s generally not the best idea to flush any litter.

• The site devotes an entire page to batteries: http://www.cityofaustin. org/sws/disposal_index_batteries.htm. If you can hold onto them until Spring 2012, I’ll gladly take them in the annual BatteriesOil-Paint-Antifreeze drive that I host.

• Jack & Adams Bicycles accepts used bicycle parts! Who knew?

• Donate used books to the city’s Recycled Reads Bookstore at 5335 Burnet Road. You can also take them to the aforementioned Ecology Action if you want them to be recycled.

• Broken glass can’t be recycled. Wrap it and label it “GLASS” before putting it in your trash bin.

• To dispose of bullets, call APD. Don’t put them in either bin.

Hazardous waste can’t collect them, either.

• Compact fluorescent light bulbs should either be taken to the hazardous waste facility, or recycled at Ikea, Lowe’s, or Home Depot.

Please take a look at the resources listed online, or call 311, if you need to dispose of a computer. It should not go in your trash or recycling bin.

It may take awhile to work our way through the alphabet of solid waste services, but it should make for an interesting journey. Until next month, happy recycling!
