Landscape Corner Submitted by Cindy Angelo, Chaparral Mgmt Fall is finally here and we have survived the summer heat and drought! I wish I could say the same thing for some of our plants, but it was a tough one on them. Fall is a time to take stock of your landscape and get rid of those dead plants that didn’t survive the summer heat and look at more drought tolerant options. We may have more summers like this past one and fall is the best time to start preparing for next year. A few things you can do to minimize your water use and ensure survival in your landscape is to choose native, drought tolerant plants and change your spray heads for your planting beds to a drip system and switch your rotors to MP Rotators which will give you better coverage because the spray pattern has been designed so it won’t be interrupted by high winds and it uses 30% less water. IT’S BROWN PATCH SEASON! With the cooler temperatures come possible fungus issues in your lawn. Brown Patch is a fungus disease that damages St. Augustine grass in spring and early fall. It is characterized by circular patches of yellow or brown grass that can vary from less than a foot to several feet in diameter. The outside of the circle has a “smoke ring” appearance caused by the spreading fungus. As the grass in the center of the circle starts to recover, it will cause a donut like appearance. The best way to prevent and treat Brown Patch is to apply a fungicide in early fall. Landscapers recommend Microlife Brown Patch, which is an Organic Fungicide with a slow release fertilizer to keep your lawn healthy while protecting it from fungus. FALL & WINTER ANNUALS Fall & Winter annuals are a great way to keep your landscape looking great throughout the winter. You may be wondering why to add fungicide when you install annuals. Annuals are more susceptible to fungus and disease because they are just baby plants. Adding a granular fungicide at the time of planting helps to fight off fungus that may already be present in the soil and give these baby plants a better chance of survival. Not all fungus is bad, which is why you should use an Organic fungicide that suppresses bad fungi while at the same time promoting beneficial fungi in your soil. FALL CLEANUP & MAINTENANCE The fall is a good time to cleanup your planting beds, prune your trees and shrubs and put down a new layer of fresh mulch to protect your plants from freezing temperatures. It is a good time to transplant those plants in your yard that just don’t quite work where they are. Soon there will be an abundance of leaves to rack and remove and gutters to clean.
