Message from the Executive Chair OTAVIA RHONE, EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CHAIR

Texas Night Out – Thank you to everyone who came out to our Texas Night Out event on October 4. I saw and spoke to people who I had never met. This was precisely the intent of the event—for residents to become familiar with other residents who do not live on the same street. Our designated Constables and other safety resources were present to help inform residents of crime going on in the community and how to increase awareness in different areas. We were hoping for better attendance given the criminal activity during the last 60 days, but we appreciate the residents who came out.

Know your neighbors – Continue to familiarize yourself with your neighbors and get to know what cars belong on your block. This can only help you and your neighbors to stay safe.

Fire Station – We are still in need of volunteers for the fire station.

If you know of anyone that may have the slightest interest, please direct him or her our Fire Station Committee Chair, William Behan, who can be reached via e-mail at wbehan275@pearlandvfd.org.

Light up Lakes of Savannah - Please participate in light up Lakes of November 7–13. Get your energy efficient light bulbs and let’s make our community a safer place.

Volunteers Needed – All committees are looking for volunteers.

It does not matter how much time you can offer. Any committee support will be appreciated! We have a Welcome Committee Chair position and Neighborhood Watch Chair position open. Please contact Otavia Rhone at twc2814316586@earthlink.net for more information.

Theft Hits Home

Roger Parker, Neighborhood Watch Committee Co-Chair I have been hit! People came into my garage in the middle of the day and took as much as they could carry. They took my pressure washer and all of its attachments. They took two of my full gas cans. Most importantly, they took the trust that I had in leaving my garage door up unattended for even a minute. It sickens me that this type of behavior has become common.

Thieves are becoming bolder in their actions. These criminals entered my home in the middle of the day and acted quickly. I was only in the house for about 10 minutes.

We must make a change and become proactive. Take the time to photograph your valuables and record any markings, such as model number or serial number, that could be used to identify them.

Consider adding video monitoring to your security system. If you become a victim, call the police as soon as possible to start a formal report. The time between when the event happens and when you report it is important.

There are resources available if you choose to go a step further in your personal protection.

Concealed weapons permit classes are available locally and require only a short-term commitment.

One of our constables is willing to teach classes throughout the year, so please contact me at rogerparker81@aim.com if you are interested. There will be a charge for these classes.

I intend to increase the level of protection in my home. Personal protection is at the forefront of my mind. Don’t wait until you are a victim before you act. Chances are someone reading this article will be hit next.

I urge you to get involved in the neighborhood watch. Let’s band together as a community to fight crime.

Savannah Times How Does Substance Abuse Affect Me? Phillip Sostand, 17-year-old resident and Manvel High School senior Danielle was 3 years old when she decided she wanted to be a singer.

Her family knew she was talented. They were just waiting until it was time. When she was 7, Danielle blew out her first performance in front of a live audience, her school. Even then, three or four agents were the first to escort her off of the stage. There was no way Danielle could fail. Her future was bright and talent was extraordinary. Her friends knew she was going somewhere in life and if she didn’t, if was life’s fault, not Danielle’s. At age 12, Danielle voice matured and grew stronger. She became a triple threat, beautiful, intelligent and talented. Danielle felt she was ready…ready for the spotlight, ready for stardom. But her parents rightfully made her stay in school and pushed education first. Danielle was patient. She knew her life set. Unlike others, her dreams were to be a reality. Then Danielle turned 17…

Throughout elementary and Junior High, Danielle’s popularity was almost natural. She was well aware of this and was certain that her status would not change as she progressed into high school. She was right. She was far more mature than her peers in her grade level and as she transitioned, she started to take an interest towards the much older kids in her schools. As her talent grew, her popularity grew, her status grew and the number of her ‘so-called’ friends grew. Although she began to attend late night parties, Danielle always knew her limits.

By the time Danielle was 17, she was widely known not only throughout her own school, but around her city as well. She didn’t miss a party. But this time, at that one party, she decided to take that one drink. She noticed all of her friends had some type of alcoholic drink in their hands and they were still having fun, they were ok. So it couldn’t be as bad as her parents had told her. Danielle decided to have that one drink. That’s all. It couldn’t possibly hurt her. Something felt wrong about it but she drunk it anyway. “Ump!” she thought to herself, “not bad.” And as the night grew longer, the drinks poured heavier and by 2am, Danielle could barely walk without stumbling. She knew she shouldn’t have been drinking. She was always the one made the right decisions. But even unable to walk, Danielle realized it was time to leave and she asked her friends to take her home. Her friends weren’t ready to leave and even if they were, she could see they were all in the same condition as she was.

So she decided to drive home thinking, “it’s only a ten minute drive anyway and I’ll drive slowly”. Danielle vowed never to drink again, said her good-byes, hopped in her car and headed home. She knew her parents would kill her if they found out so as she started her drive home, she planned to go straight to her room, shower and get to bed.

On Oct 27th at 2:31a, they remember it well, her parents received a phone call from the hospital. The Hospital Aid explained there was a collision not far from their house, involving a drunk driver and an 18-wheeler and they needed to get to the hospital immediately. baby girl hurt? What about her bright future? Why was that drunken person driving anyway? Imagine their pain when they learned that that drunken person was their precious baby girl. What was she doing drinking? She’s a good girl, a great daughter! How? When?

Why? Danielle was their daughter, their only child, a soon to be a superstar, maybe even a wife and one day, a mother. But because she took that one drink at that one party, so now crowds will not be moved by her song, some lucky man will never be her husband and she will never hear the words, “Mommy, I love you” be told to her.

That night, Danielle died.

So you ask, “How does substance abuse affects me?” It affects me because substance abuse kills the Danielles of the world. It kills daughters and sons, future friendships, future wives and husbands and future mothers and fathers. Substance abuse affects me because it kills futures.

Target Heart Rate Range for Cardiovascular Exercise: Do You Know Yours? - By Sarah Jordan, MS

Are you getting the most you can from your cardiovascular exercise program? Determining your target heart-rate range may help you see more results and become more aware of the intensity of exercise that you are completing. I love to empower my clients by educating them on this personalized range. And even more so, I enjoy seeing their faces light up when they tell me about the results they are seeing because of their success in using it.

A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT CALCULATING TARGET HEART-RATE RANGE (THRR):

• Always check with your doctor before starting or changing your exercise program. To best determine your fitness level and training zones, seek a fitness assessment from a certified professional personal trainer. Numbers provided here are just estimates.

• These estimates are for healthy individuals. Remember that conditions like pregnancy, health issues, and some medications can affect your heart rate.

• There are times when your mid-exercise heart rate will be below or above your target heart rate range, and that is okay. But use the THRR as a goal to work within most of the time.

• A good estimate of your maximum heart rate is 220 – your age.

CALCULATING YOUR TARGET HEART-RATE RANGE:

Knowing how to take your pulse and find your heart rate during exercise can help you evaluate the effectiveness of your exercise program. Using the Karvonen formula, we can calculate target heart-rate range (THRR). We do the following to calculate our low and high end of our THRR: 220 – age – resting heart rate x low end of training zone + resting heart rate = ______ (low end of THRR) 220 – age – resting heart rate x high end of training zone + resting heart rate = ______ (high end of THRR) — STEP 1 — CALCULATE YOUR RESTING HEART RATE.

The best time to do this is first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. Take a 60-second count, and write your resting heart rate value down.

— STEP 2 — DETERMINE WHAT TRAINING ZONE YOU WILL USE BASED ON YOUR CURRENT LEVEL OF FITNESS.

Estimates provided by www.acefitness.org: Low level of fitness: 45-55%; Fair level of fitness: 55-65%; Good level of fitness: 65-75%; Excellent / elite level of fitness: 75-85%. (These are just examples and can be changed to best fit your current level of fitness. For the most accurate calculation, get a fitness assessment.)

— STEP 3 — CALCULATE YOUR TARGET HEART-RATE RANGE USING THE KARVONEN FORMULA.

— STEP 4 — LEARN HOW TO USE THIS HEART-RATE RANGE REGULARLY IN YOUR CARDIOVASCULAR WORKOUTS.

For example: A healthy 30-year old female with a good level of fitness and a resting heart rate of 60 beats per minute and using a training zone of 60-80%: 220 – 30 – 60 x .60 + 60 = 138 beats per minute 220 – 30 – 60 x .80 + 60 = 164 beats per minute Using this calculation, her target heart-rate range is 138 – 164 beats per minute.

So the question is, “Now that I know my target heart-rate range, how do I actually apply that to my workouts?”

FOLLOW THESE STEPS FOR SUCCESS:

• Calculate your target heart-rate range and write it down where you can easily find it.

• Find a range that you can remember. For example: For the 30-year old female above, her range is 138-164 beats per minute. That is hard to remember mid-exercise, so she should do this: - Determine and remember the range you should find in a 6-second pulse count. (Ex: 13-17 beats in 6-second pulse count, as this would equal 130 – 170 beats in a minute, which aligns with her THRR.) - She takes her pulse (mid-exercise) for 6 seconds, and should get 13-17 beats.

• Practice and learn to take your pulse properly.

Or, place the tips of your index and second fingers on your lower neck on either side of your windpipe.

- Press lightly with your fingers until you feel the pulse beneath your fingers. You may need to move your fingers around slightly up or down until you feel the pulsing. If placing fingers on neck, be sure you don’t press too hard.

- Use a watch with a second hand, or look at a clock with a second hand.

• Count your pulse for 6 seconds. Multiply this number by 10 (add a “0”) to get your heart rate (pulse) / beats per minute.

• Give yourself time to get comfortable using this method. It will pay off in the long run!

Everyone wants to find ways to make their fitness routines more efficient. It is my hope that using the target heart-rate range will be one way of doing just that.
