March 2012

Girl Scouts Celebrate 100 Years On March 12, 1912, Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low gathered 18 girls from Savannah, Georgia for a local Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should have the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. Today Girl Scouts of the USA has a membership of more than 3.2 million girls and adults. Of those, 541 girls and 301 adults are right here in our local neighborhoods. The Compass Rose Service Unit is made up of girls from Black, Farney and Sampson Elementary Schools and the middle and high schools that grow from them. These local Scouts already have been busy celebrating the 100th year of Girl Scouting, since it was launched at the National Girl Scout Convention in Houston in November. Several Compass Rose girls took part in the opening ceremony and many local adults volunteered at the four-day convention. The girls in Compass Rose kicked off the year sporting new t-shirts featuring a clever owl. “Look Whooo’s 100. Be Wise... Be a Girl Scout.” At a Service Unit event, Scouts shared their wisdom on a huge banner. “Why We Love Girl Scouts: 100s of Reasons for 100 Years.” Girl Scouting has opportunities for every girl, and some of the favorite reasons to love scouting Copyright © 2012 Peel, Inc.

included camping, making friends, helping others, doing crafts, horseback riding and selling cookies. Cookie sales are an important fundraiser for the Girl Scouts, and the girls of Compass Rose have been out in force this year. It’s not too late to stock up. Watch for Girl Scout cookie booths outside area groceries. Junior Troop 14387 actually purchased extra cookies to present to area firefighters. This is one of the many Girl Scout-themed activities the troop is doing to celebrate the 100th anniversary. The troop is keeping a running log of their events, planning to

have accomplished 100 by the end of the celebration year. In addition to cookie sales and cookie donations, this troop has enjoyed field trips to Santa’s Wonderland, the Ronald McDonald House and a Junie B. Jones play. The list of fun keeps growing. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. Join us as we celebrate 100 years of Girl Scouting!
