Lakemont Living Introduction

HOW TEXAS GOT ITS INDEPENDENCE (THE CONDENSED VERSION)

During the early 1800’s as Mexico won its independence from Spain and was seized by Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Texas was also fighting for its own identity. On March 2, 1836 Texas citizens met at the now famed Washington-on-the-Brazos to declare Texas independent and adopt a constitution. Several days later Mexican troops would defeat Texas soldiers in the battle at the Alamo and many more would suffer the same fate until Sam Houston’s Texan army defeated Santa Anna and his men at the Battle of San Jacinto, near where the San Jacinto monument stands today. Our state is rich with history. Many landmarks and museums that exist today can be found just miles from Lakemont. Visit the Texas Historical Commission web page http:// www.thc.state.tx.us/index.shtml to find more information. SEEKING BLOCK CAPTAINS Would you like to become a part of the Neighborhood Watch program as a Block Captain? We welcome residents interested in serving. If you or someone you know is interested, please send your contact information to our Neighborhood Watch Committee at LakemontWatch@ yahoo.com for more information. If you are a current Block Captain and have not been receiving monthly updates from our Neighborhood Watch Program please contact us. SCHOOL ZONES Please be aware of the school zones along Lakemont Bend and Mason Road. McNeill Elementary has students walking and riding bikes to and from school every day so it’s important to adhere to speed limits, crossing guards and school buses. If you are traveling within the neighborhood during drop-off or pick-up hours, please be patient. We appreciate your efforts to keep our children safe! SPRING IS ALMOST HERE! Spring is almost here and that means “Yard of the Month” is coming soon! Get out those mowers and weed eaters and let’s get those yards looking beautiful! We will be selecting the May yard of the month in mid to late April. Signs will go in yards the first week of May. We will select one yard per section. Will it be yours? WELCOME WHOLE FOODS! Slated to open in 2013 Whole Foods is coming to Katy! The health food market will be located in the Grand Lakes Marketplace on the east side of SH 99 and Fry Road and is scheduled to be accompanied by Stein Mart and Cost Plus World Market.

Q: Is the Grand Parkway (Hwy 99) going to be a tollroad? A: Yes, construction has already begun on the overpasses at West Airport and West Riverpark Drive; the entire project is slated to be complete in 2013. The Fort Bend County Grand Parkway Tollroad Authority is leading this new development and although opposed by some County officials the lack of state funding and need to gain “local control” over the project garnered a successful vote in favor of tolled overpasses along a 13 mile stretch of the Grand Parkway from Hwy 59 to I-10. That means as a motorist you will have a choice when approaching a light on the existing feeder roads to enter the main lanes and pay the toll for quick and easy access to your destination or wait at the light(s). There is no doubt that this is a forward thinking move in order to accommodate the growing number of residents our area is attracting but I must say I’m not excited about paying another convenience fee.

Lakemont Living ORAL HEALTH UPDATE IT MAY NOT BE “JUST A TOOTHACHE”.

Going to the dentist may not be on the top of your To Do list, but if you’re experiencing dental pain, a trip to the dentist may be just what you need. If you have a toothache that lasts more than one or two days, you notice swelling around a tooth, bleeding, or experience severe pain or fever, it’s time to make an appointment with the dentist as soon as possible. A thorough examination and diagnosis is important to prevent more serious complications to your teeth, jaw, and gums. Dental decay and gum disease are progressive in nature. Early diagnosis is essential to a quicker and easier treatment. THERE ARE SEVERAL CAUSES OF DENTAL PAIN, INCLUDING:

• Tooth decay affecting the enamel and the dentin, or inner layer of the tooth • Tooth abscess caused by severe tooth decay or a trauma causing an infection at the root

Copyright © 2012 Peel, Inc.

of the tooth or between the gum and tooth • Damage to existing fillings due to pressure from chewing, grinding, or clenching • Teeth grinding that causes fracturing, loosening, and excessive wear • A fractured tooth from a traumatic dental injury • Infected gums as a result of gingivitis or gum disease (periodontitis) During your exam, your dentist will typically ask about the nature of your dental pain, when it started, and if anything makes it better or worse. Then, your dentist will conduct a physical examination of your mouth, teeth, gums, jaws, tongue, and throat. X-rays and other tests may be recommended, depending on what the dentist suspects is causing your toothache. Once your dentist has determined the cause of your dental pain, you will be pre-

sented with treatment options. If a cavity is causing your pain, a simple filling may do the trick. However, if there is an infection that has spread to the tooth’s nerve, a root canal may be necessary. An antibiotic may also be prescribed if you have swelling of the jaw or a fever. DENTAL PAIN IS PREVENTABLE!

Because most toothaches are caused by decay, practicing good oral hygiene is the easiest way to prevent dental pain. This includes brushing and flossing every day and visiting your dentist for professional cleanings and checkups on the schedule determined by the Dental Hygienist. In addition, eating a healthy, balanced diet that is low in sugar will not only help you prevent cavities but will improve your body’s overall health. Submitted by Dr. Flury
