Are We Fire Safe? How Do We Get There?
Spring has arrived and we are all busy working in our yards and anticipating the coming summer. Last year we know it was exceptionally hot and dry. Our lawns took a beating but we were spared a fire outbreak. Many have been fearful of a repeated fire threat for this coming summer. During the Annual Homeowners meeting last July we talked about becoming a “Firewise Community” and requested volunteers to research the steps necessary to achieve this certification. No volunteers stepped forward and as a consequence no progress was made. We have not been able to proceed with some fun events because there was interest but an insufficient number of volunteers resulting in the cancellation of those activities. Your HOA Board remains committed to listening to the community and implementing your wishes as we can. In my last message to you a reference was made to great communities where people want to live and home values are appreciating because the people who live there put their time and talent into making them that way. Once more we are making an appeal for volunteers to represent their street or block. We, the Board, would like to hear back from the community. If you would like to volunteer and to be on the Communications Committee please contact Denise at Southwest Management to let her know of your interest. This will Copyright © 2012 Peel, Inc.
take approximately one hour a month to serve on this team. Also, the terms of two Board members are expiring this July so begin to think about whether this is a place that you are willing to serve. A ‘big thumbs up’ to everyone who came out during our spring clean up. The greenbelts are looking better even if they are not as finished as some of the volunteers wanted to make them. We learned from this experience that we should do this each spring and bring in a specialist to advise homeowners as they clear dead limbs and brush. Some individuals have come to the Board
requesting the Board hire a service to clean out the greenbelts. The Board is not willing to do this because not all homeowners live on a greenbelt and their resources would be used in a way that does not benefit them. Second, there are greenbelts that are not owned the HOA and they too would pay without benefiting comparable to those homeowners whose home is on an HOA owned greenbelt. Consequently, there would be uneven treatment of homeowners, which the Board strives not to do. The decision to live on a greenbelt is a little like living on a mountain. You have a great view but during a heavy rain you are at greater risk to have your home sliding down the mountain. We remain sensitive to the concerns about fire during the coming summer. We will work to keep ourselves informed and advise the community of the steps that we should take as we learn more. We encourage all homeowners to abide by the water restrictions in effect and be very careful in the use of fire outdoors during the coming season. The Communications Committee could be extremely useful in this area in helping to identify potential hazards and allowing them to be corrected before they become a problem. All of us must work together to keep our community safe and thriving. Paula Dawning Vice President
