The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (COCORAHS) SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO TRACK RAINFALL

CoCoRaHS is a non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). CoCoRaHS is recruiting volunteers to help keep track of where and how much it rains across the United States. Because the Harris County Flood Control District relies on precipitation data collected by CoCoRaHS during and after rainfall and flood events, it encourages residents in the Houston/Galveston region to be "data collectors" in their own backyards. Volunteering for CoCoRaHS does not require a meteorology degree or list of credentials - just an interest in observing and reporting weather conditions and a desire to learn more about how weather can affect and impact our region.

Using an official CoCoRaHS rain gauge in a strategic location, a volunteer is asked to take precipitation measurements each day at approximately the same time and then record those measurements on the CoCoRaHS website (www.cocorahs.org). The data is organized and displayed on the website for the general public’s observation and use. The National Weather Service, meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, public works managers, insurance adjusters, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, engineers, mosquito control, ranchers and farmers, teachers and students and residents all use the information. To join, go to the CoCoRaHS website (www.cocorahs.org) and click on the “Join CoCoRaHS” emblem in the upper right corner of the home page. The website also offers a wealth of information on the organization’s background, training and educational tools, where to purchase the required CoCoRaHS rain gauge, how and where to set up the gauge on your property and much more.

KLEINWOOD Klein ISD News Briefs REGISTER TODAY FOR SWIM LESSONS & SUMMER RECREATION FROM KISD ATHLETICS

The Klein ISD Athletic Department is now accepting applications for swimming lessons and recreation camps for summer 2012. Programs are taught by Klein ISD coaches and offer personal instruction and will emphasize basic skills, techniques, strategies, offensive/defensive schemes, and fundamentals of various sports. Each activity has a specific date, time, age range, location and registration fee, visit: http://www.kleinisd.net/ and click on Summer Camps for specifics on each. Swim lessons cost $50, children must be four-years-old or older, and are held in three sessions: June 11-21 (first session), June 25-July 5 (second session), and July 9-19 (third session). Register for swim lessons at Klein High, Klein Forest or Klein Collins athletic offices. Registration is underway for a variety of summer recreation camps for students in grades 5-12. Summer camps include four-hour sessions held for one week throughout the summer in the following sports: baseball, basketball, football, volleyball and wrestling. Intermediate girls basketball (grades 6-8) and volleyball (grades 5-9) leagues are forming, as well as a strength and training camp for grades 7-12 scheduled to run the entire summer at all KISD high school campuses. There is also co-ed tennis, track and field, and cross country two-week camps being held twice during the summer for grades 2-9. Lastly, girls and boys soccer camps are scheduled for June 4-7 for grades 6-9.

or trainings for campus staff with award amounts that range from $5,000 to $25,000. Schultz Elementary joins Klein Forest and Klein Oak as award recipients for the inaugural year of the mega grant. Schultz Elementary won a $25,000 Lead the Spark grant sponsored by Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott to help build a track to support its Shape Up Schultz program. The Schultz dirt track which has deteriorated over the years has seen an increase in activity from families who participate in the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jogging Club. Grant funds will help to build an asphalt track and are also earmarked to implement several fun physical activities that promote physical fitness like cycling and rollerblading units. Individual educator grants range from $1,500 to $5,000 for inventive classroom programs that support the mission of the Klein ISD. Teachers may apply each semester and grants are evaluated by KEF directors and district representatives through a blind evaluation process. The number of grants awarded is determined by funds allocated by KEF each semester. Winners are then notified by a surprise visit from the Celebration Express bus that arrives at their campus. KISD EDUCATION FOUNDATION SETS $124,500 GRANT RECORD

Celebration Express cruises through the Klein ISD to surprise seven grant recipients After awarding $42,700 in educator grants, the Klein ISD Education Foundation (KEF) celebrates the largest giving season in its 12-year history by awarding $124,500 in grants. Since 2001, the KEF has awarded $1,069,252 in educator grants, fulfilling its mission to be a funding source for innovative academic and enrichment projects throughout the district benefiting more than 2,275 teachers and 115,515 students in the KISD. 2012 Open Regattas at Seabrook Sailing Club The Seabrook Sailing Club is hosting two major regattas this summer on Galveston Bay, open to all interested sailors. Whether it’s challenging one design racing or family fun, Seabrook Sailing Club’s summer regatta schedule has it all. We are looking forward to having local and out-of-town sailors join us for competition and fun on the bay. Summer Solstice Regatta: Seabrook Sailing Club’s annual Summer Solstice Regatta will be held on June 23 and 24, 2012. This year we will be kicking off the regatta on Friday night with fireworks and a keg! We encourage everybody to leave work early and bring a picnic. This regatta is open to all small sailboats and beginner racers are welcome. Lasers, 470’s, Sunfish, windsurfers, Vangaurd 15’s, and catamarans are regular classes at this fun event. This regatta is on the Texas Laser District 15 Circuit schedule, drawing Lasers from around the state. There will be one design starts for all classes with at least three boats. A Portsmouth handicap fleet will be formed for boats that do not make up a one design fleet. Official Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions will be posted on the SSC website nearer the time of the event. Endless Summer Regatta: Each year, youth sailors from all over Texas and surrounding states participate in the Endless Summer Regatta at the Seabrook Sailing Club. The Endless Summer Regatta is the best attended event on the Texas Youth Circuit after Texas Race Week, with approximately

Optimists on the downwind run at the Endless Summer Regatta 200 sailors, coaches, parents, and organizers coming to Seabrook and Galveston Bay. The youth sailors participate in 6 different fleets; the beginner sailors in the Optimist Green fleet, the experienced Optimist sailors in the Red/White/Blue fleet, Laser 4.7, and Laser Radial. Parents enjoy the view of the sailing course and Kemah from the clubhouse deck, while their kids put their skills to the test. Sailing is a great sport for kids that fosters self-confidence, independence, and responsibility. As skippers, they are in control of their own destiny; they make their own decisions, which have a direct result on their finish position, well-being, and boat

condition. But most importantly, it’s fun! The 2012 regatta will take place September 22-23, 2012. Official Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions will be posted on the SSC website nearer the time of the event. The Seabrook Sailing Club has been providing safe, organized, and challenging sailing for local sailors and guests since 1934. If you’ve been thinking about learning to sail, getting back on the water, or competing in our organized club races, check out what the Seabrook Sailing Club has to offer.
