Yes, It’s that time again! Along with other local and national elections, you are being asked to vote by 16 November 2012 for 4 places on the PHNA Board.

Please see inside for the ballot to use to vote and additional voting information. To vote, you must have been a duespaying member of the neighborhood association as of 5:00pm, 1 November 2012. Candidates and candidate statements are included inside the newsletter.

Suzanne Deaderick and Elizabeth Cash will be at the November lunch to discuss their new book about historic Pemberton. They will also have copies available to sign, just in time for Christmas presents!

Thanks to Carla Hatler and Nikki Faulkner and our Sponsors, the annual Pemberton Heights Fall picnic was a huge success this year with the largest turnout in recorded history! Almost 325 neighbors gathered on an unusually chilly evening on Sunday, October 7th, at Jean Mueller’s side lawn to enjoy a delightful meal from P. Terry’s, and catch up with friends, old and new.

and beer donated by Brown Distributing, while the kids and teetotalers were treated to water and Sweet Leaf Tea also donated by Brown Distributing. Mosquitoes were kept away with mosquito control donated by ABC Home & Commercial. In addition, both ABC Home & Commercial and Comerica Bank provided generous financial support.

In addition to socializing with one another, Pemberton residents were given the opportunity to pay annual association membership dues, make donations to the neighborhood security efforts, and sign up for the perennial favorite holiday carriage rides in December. Hello neighbors, My family and I have lived in Pemberton since 1993, in the same split-level house on Claire Avenue where my husband, Rex, and I raised our sons, Mark and Paul. What drew us here nearly twenty years ago, and what we still love about the neighborhood today, is its charm and history and its close proximity to Pease Park, the University of Texas, and downtown Austin.

We have supported the neighborhood association (dues, security donations) for many years, and last year I became actively involved when I volunteered to conduct the PHNA board election from our home. From the day ballots started arriving at our door to the day of the actual vote count, everything ran smoothly, and the election culminated in a friendly morning of donuts, coffee, and ballot counting. I enjoyed the entire process and helping to bring our neighborhood together.

My experience working on the neighborhood election is why I am now running for the board. I have no set agenda other than furthering goals identified by consensus of our neighbors and, as I did with the election at our home, helping the board run smoothly and bringing our neighborhood together.

I am a facilitator and problem solver, and I am uniquely familiar with the workings of neighborhood boards, having organized and attended hundreds of board meetings in the ten years I practiced law. As a public law attorney, I represented the five-member homeowner boards of dozens of water districts and other political subdivisions. I drafted agendas for their monthly board meetings, attended the board meetings, and advised the board members on a broad range of issues—water, wastewater, drainage, property taxes, elections, open meetings, private security, board liability, 4

insurance, investments, and public finance, among others. I also served as liaison between the boards and the city, county, and state agencies with jurisdiction over their neighborhoods. While the scope of issues facing boards of political subdivisions and boards of neighborhood associations may differ, there are many common issues, and the processes for accomplishing goals are remarkably similar.

Before moving to Austin, we lived in Houston (which is where our children were born). There, I clerked for the Chief Judge of the Southern District of Texas, then joined the law firm Vinson & Elkins. In 1992, I was appointed by Governor Richards to serve on the Texas Water Development Board, the statewide water planning and finance agency.

The following year, our family moved to Austin so that Rex, also an attorney, could open the Austin office of his law firm. After serving on the TWDB, I practiced law part-time with the Austin office of Akin, Gump, then took a very early retirement to focus on my family and volunteer at our children’s schools.

When we moved to Pemberton in 1993, Mark and Paul were just toddlers; now, Paul is a senior at Harvard, and Mark is in graduate school at MIT. As for me, I’m a UT, Austin, and American University, DC, graduate—BS and JD, respectively.

For the past three years, with our boys away at college, I have been working on my book, The Wisdom Tree: A Mother’s Journey into Israel and the Palestinian Territories. My book is now finished, with publication set for this fall. Now, I’d like to spend more time giving back to our wonderful neighborhood. Candidate Statements

Hello neighbors, Many of you will recognize my name from all the emails I’ve sent about the recent neighborhood picnic. I’ve decided to run for a seat on the board of the neighborhood association for a few reasons, but the biggest is because I am interested in doing more things to help bring the neighborhood together. That’s why I’ve been such a big proponent of the PHNA Nextdoor site and why I happily agreed to help Nikki Faulkner with the picnic this year when she asked me to co-chair with her.

I initially became more involved in neighborhood activities when we moved here last summer in the midst of what seemed to be a crime wave (in addition to the heat wave!). My husband (Billy) and daughter (Hannah) moved “home” to Austin from Los Angeles only to be greeted by thieves who broke into our cars on two different occasions within the first two weeks we were here. In the seven years we lived in LA, we had never had a break in. So, I took an active interest in neighborhood security and have been involved in the Security Committee. Thankfully, we haven’t had much reported crime this year but neighborhood security continues to be of interest to me My husband is a fifth generation Texan (proudly!). We both grew up in the Dallas area and went to school at UT here in Austin. We met here fifteen years ago and our careers took us to California for ten of those years. We always knew we wanted to move back and when we had our daughter, we really wanted her to grow up here. So here we are!

In the year and three months we’ve lived here, we’ve been so fortunate to meet so many great neighbors and new friends. We’re happy to be back in Austin, and living in Pemberton Heights.

And me personally, I’ve had a long and exciting career in advertising.

I started here at T3 as an Account Executive and ended up at a boutique ad agency in Santa Monica as General Manager, managing tens of millions of dollars in business and running agency operations. Now, I have my own marketing consulting business and am a soon-to-be 2nd time mom. My career has taught me the importance of diplomacy and how manage a hectic schedule and a family, all of which I know will come in handy as a board member.

I look forward to being even more involved in the neighborhood and meeting more wonderful neighbors!

Hello neighbors, You may recognize my name as the editor of the Pemberton Journal, the monthly newsletter.

I’ve decided to take the opportunity to further serve the neighborhood by running for a seat on the board of the neighborhood association. I am interested in bringing together the neighborhood, while keeping all neighbors informed and connected on issues that affect both Pemberton Heights and central Texas.

That’s why I’ve been such a big proponent of the new board’s committees and the new social activities: the PHNA Nextdoor site, the monthly lunches, evening get- togethers and the annual picnic.

My husband (Jeff ) and I have lived in several neighborhoods since we arrived in Austin in 1981, both suburban and urban.

We consider ourselves lucky to have finally made Pemberton Heights our home in 2006. We have been rebuilding our home at Wooldridge and 29th and hope to be moved in by the time you read this.

My husband and I are both in design. I own a small architectural practice that focuses on public and commercial work and my husband does residential design from home.

We are both very interested in design, planning, and permitting issues that affect Pemberton homeowners. I was involved in the two year west Austin combined plan development process and am currently on the CWANP contact team. I have also served on the PHNA government affairs committee.

I have been a supporter of the neighborhood security program, attending the security committee meetings and would work with the board to see security enhanced in neighborhood.

I would make it a goal to work toward consensus, effectiveness and openness on the board. I look forward to being even more involved in the neighborhood and serving my wonderful neighbors!

The Pemberton Journal "Austin's Pemberton Heights" Hits Bookstores

Austin’s Pemberton Heights, over two years in the making, will hit local bookstores on October 29, 2012. The book is part of Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America” series. Over 230 photos, dating from the early 1900s into the 1970s, dug from the archives of the Austin History Center, as well as from old shoeboxes and albums of past and present neighbors, have been pulled together in 126 pages to preserve and celebrate Pemberton’s history. Each photograph has an informative caption. This book is about the people of the neighborhood, their lives, businesses, activities, and homes. It’s also about the architects, artisans, and builders that designed and constructed those homes, and the roads and bridges that gave access to this new development perched on a bluff outside the city limits.

Neighbor Clyde Ikins, who later became a nationally-renowned water lily expert, had a pond in his front yard on McCallum… and the stories go on and on.

Suzanne and Elizabeth will be the featured authors at Westwood Country Club’s Literary Luncheon on November 13th, and will also be selling and signing books at the Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Lunch on November 14th.

Elizabeth and Suzanne want to thank the many generous friends and neighbors who provided pictures and stories that helped make this book possible, along with the Austin History Center and City Council, and hope the book will serve as an important connection to our past.

STOLEN HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

Unfortunately over the past years, our neighborhood has seen a pattern of petty ( and not so petty) thefts involving holiday decorations and items left out on porches. Neighbors have put out displays on lawns and porches only to find them gone overnight or after a few days. The usual suspects have included the fraternities with houses just across Shoal Creek in the West Campus area. The Neighborhood Association has sent letters to the Panhellenic Council warning that such petty theft is not petty to our neighbors. Anyone caught stealing personal decorations in the neighborhood will be prosecuted. We want to prevent any assumption our neighborhood can be picked over for other’s free decorating needs. Anyone who witnesses a theft or suspicious activity should report any information to the police as well as the list serve alert system - alerts@pembertonheights.org

FALL IS THE TIME FOR PLANTING TREES The city has Free Treegators Available

If you are an Austin Water customer or Austin Community Tree Recipient stop by Austin Water’s Waller Creek Center located at 625 E. 10th Street to pick up a free Treegator.

Treegators are slow release watering bags that evenly deliver water to the roots of young trees without run-off or evaporation.

Trees should be 2-3 inches in diameter (about the size of your wrist) with branches at least 25” from the ground. Supplies are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

Pick up is available (one per Austin Water customer) between 8am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, at the 625 E. 10th Street first floor Customer Service office.
