2012 in Review

Now that we have gotten through a litany of Texas Legislation and a very long election season, it is time for all of us to settle back, to reflect on all of our accomplishments, to be with our families and to enjoy the holiday season. By the time that this newsletter comes out we will have had our last community gathering at the Holiday Party and the ladies should have one more opportunity to get together at the Ladies Ornament Exchange. So on behalf of the Board we want to wish you and your families a joyous holiday season and a safe New Year’s and look forward to seeing everyone at our first Last Tuesday in 2013.

Mar tha's Roses

This could be a story about a Spanish revolutionary....but it’s not. More like a rose revolutionary. You see, while we have all gone nuts over the Knockout roses (well, they are a game changer), another rose has quietly and steadily put its stamp on the North Texas landscape...The Martha Gonzales rose. This neat, compact, single leafed China rose could not have a more different upbringing than that of the Knockout. You see, this rose was “found” in 1982 growing in the yard of (drumroll please)...a Ms. Martha Gonzales, in Navasota Texas. From whence it came to be there, no one knows, including the late Ms. Gonzales, who passed away in 2000. The finders were Texas Rose Rustler Pam Puryear and Dallas rosarian Joe Woodyard. They took cuttings (with permission naturally) of two other roses,

then debated over this species, finally agreeing to take cuttings of it as well. Now commercially available, it is named in honor of the late Ms. Gonzales. The inspiration for this article is that, as I type, I am looking at six of these roses in my yard, in full bloom here in mid-November, and they are acting very native. The color is a dark red to almost purple hue, the foliage often goes a glamorous burgundy, and best of all, and they are not drama queens needing constant attention. A true landscape rose in other words, it can actually be shaped as a hedge. And while said to be compact, ours have slowly grown to a height of over six feet! We regard the Martha Gonzales rose as in indispensable component of our landscape come by and check ‘em out!

Brook Meadows THE SMITH FAMILY MOVES IN TO 2904 MEADOWVIEW DR.

October saw the Smith family relocating to Brook Meadows from within the local area and they love the central location of our neighborhood. Stanie was in the Air Force and was stationed “all over” including 11 years in Germany. Returning to our area after retiring because they have family here, he now works at Lockheed Martin on the UAE program. Shirley is active in Community Bible Study in Southlake and their son Stan II is a junior at UNT. When they are not busy with family, they enjoy travel and gardening, but for now are focused on doing some updating and remodeling of their new home. WELCOME!
