ast month at the HOA annual meeting, we had an election for two board positions. Dennis Domanski and Travis Krischke won those two spots and will each serve on the HOA board for a three year term. The HOA continues to have a need for volunteers in many areas. If you would like to help out, contact one of the committee chairs or one of the board members. -Darrell Park

Westside at Buttercup Creek Coats for Kids
As a recipient of a gift, have you ever immediately turned around and paid it forward and given of your time, talent, and treasure to help someone else? Many who have received coats for their children and grandchildren at the annual Coats For Kids distribution day have come to the volunteer check-in and stayed for the rest of the day to help others just as they were helped moments earlier. They gave their gifts right back to the community - a circle of service truly indicative of a successful program. Coats for Kids is a program in its 26th year that provides warm winter coats each December to disadvantaged children and teenagers in Central Texas through a community-wide collection and distribution process. Each year, The Junior League of Austin, Jack Brown Cleaners, KASE 101 and KVUE partner with the community to ensure the children of Central Texas stay warm. On average, 30,000 coats are distributed per year with the help of over 2,600 community volunteers. So how can you participate? Donate a new or gently-used coat to your nearest Jack Brown Cleaners, organize a coat drive through many outlets in your community (schools, places of worship, offices,
neighborhoods), volunteer during sorting days or distribution days or spread the word. FACTS: • Distribution Day: Saturday, December 8th from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM • Distribution Site: Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road • Community Coat Drive: Monday, November 12th through Wednesday, December 5th. Please drop your coats off at any local Jack Brown Cleaners. • School & Business Coat Drive Competition: Monday, November 12th through Friday, November 30th. Please drop your coats off at any local Jack Brown Cleaners. To register your business or school, go to the JLA website: www.jlaustin.org/coats. • Volunteer: Please join us to help sort coats December 4 - December 7 and/or to distribute coats to children on December 8. Register at www.jlaustin.org/coats. Find all details about Coats For Kids at http://www.jlaustin.org/ coats

Westside at Buttercup Creek By USPTA/PTR Master Professional Fernando Velasco HOW TO HIT A ONE-HANDED BACKHAND In previous newsletters, I offered tips on how to hit a Forehand and a Two-Handed Backhand. In this issue, I will give you instructions on how to execute a one-handed backhand for a right hander. This stroke is still used by many league and tournament players since it gives players a wider range of reach and flexibility to hit slices and drop shots. Step 1: Ready position: The body is facing the net. The right hand is holding the end of the racket in a forehand grip position and the left hand is on the throat of the racket. The left hand is holding the racket slightly tighter than the right hand. Feet are shoulder width apart and the body in is good balance. Step 2: Back swing: When the opponent’s ball is headed to the backhand side, the left hand takes the racket back and the right hand changes the grip with one quarter turn placing the index knuckle at the upper ridge of the handle. The body should start taking the racket back before the ball bounces. Notice the turn of the upper body and the right foot leading the left foot. Eyes are still focused on the incoming ball. Step 3: Point of Contact: The eyes now shift toward the point of contact which should be about 12-18 inches in front of the right foot.
The right hand is holding the racket tight. The racket has made contact with the ball and weight of the player has shifted toward the point of contact. It is important to keep the right shoulder closed and not open the left hip too early. Flexing the right knee will allow more flexibility and power on the ball. Step 4: Follow Through: Once the racket has made contact with the ball, both of the arms need to be extended for better balance. The right arm should be straight and the follow through upwards above the head. Look for next Issue: The Forehand Volley
Green Gift Giving ‘Tis better to give than to receive! Consider the following creative ways to help reduce waste while you spread holiday cheer. Try these gift wrapping alternatives: • Scarves, handkerchiefs or fabric scraps • Old sheet music, posters, maps or wallpaper scraps • A present in a present, such as picnic supplies wrapped in a tablecloth For finishing touches, instead of new bows or ribbons, use: • Bows saved from other gifts or ornaments • Neckties and scarves • Scraps of fabric, lace or yarn • Beads and buttons To protect fragile gifts, use Styrofoam-free materials such as: • Dry, popped popcorn, along with a note explaining that birds can eat it • Biodegradable starch packing peanuts • Crumpled pages from magazines
