2 1 0 2 E R BONFI The Annual Bonfire of November 2012 was attended by over 800 families and friends. It was an absolute success where neighbors were able to enjoy each other, re-encounter, and make new friends. The 2012 Bonfire was the first to have country music entertainment. The music was a wonderful addition to the event with many happy couples dancing to the tunes. For the kids, the clown balloonist, face painter, inflatable slide, cotton candy, and popcorn, made it an unbelievable night. There was fun for all!

The 2012 Bonfire was the most attended ever. It was a pleasant but unexpected surprise, particularly for The Dominion Country Club who so graciously provided complimentary food and drinks.

The fire was enjoyed by kids and adults alike. It was one of the tallest flames ever. The Firefighters on site allowed our neighborhood kids to hop on their fire truck and talk to them about fire safety. The Pecan Grove, property of The Dominion Country Club, was the perfect spot for this annual neighborhood event. The Country Club, the Dominion Homeowners Association and the Board’s Neighborhood Outreach Committee worked together to make this event an exceptional one. But what made the 2012 Bonfire the most special was all the Dominion Residents coming together as neighbors.

Dominion News (Continued from Page 3) Security (G4S) and Landscape Maintenance (Native Landscape) were also evaluated. Native Landscape has since been replaced with Maldonado Landscaping. These scores will be used as benchmarks going forward and compared with results from surveys in future years.

In addition, the survey asked residents for general comments and suggestions from which the Board and Management look to identify trends. From these comments and trends, we identified several key issues, which we look to focus our efforts for next year. They include, but are not limited to: 1) Consistent enforcement of the Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs), 2) Effective, timely and accurate communication and 3) Maintaining The Dominion’s standards in every neighborhood.

The survey results will provide a foundation in developing an action plan to improve the HOA’s services and hopefully, resident satisfaction in 2013.

In closing, I want to thank those residents who took the time to complete and return the survey and want to assure all residents that the survey results and comments have been reviewed and considered and that the information will be used to help the HOA improve its’ services.

SECOND ANNUAL DOMINION GARDENS BLOCK PARTY Last month on November 10, many of The Gardens residents gathered for our second annual Gardens Neighborhood Block Party.

Invitations went out to all Garden’s neighbors who responded with about 50 attendees ready for fall friendship and introductions to many neighbors including several new to our community nestled in the woodland area near the North Gate.

Our greenbelt/mailbox/park area was a perfect setting for a cool evening with friends old and new. We realized this diverse neighborhood is being united through the casual socializing and eating the deliciously prepared food we shared with one another. We even discovered a former bakery owner in our group who brought a yummy and gorgeous 2-tiered cake for everyone.

These shared evenings continue to be a uniting and growing event in our community and Dominion as a whole.

Several residents put our party together by hanging posters, fall decor, and placing table and chairs in preparation for the fun. We thank all of them. THE OUTLOOK DAAG REPORTS SUCCESS FOR 2012

This first year has been successful for DAAG’s Trap-Neuter-Return program. Since its inception in May 2012, the Dominion Animal Advocates Group has humanely trapped, neutered, and vaccinated 27 roaming cats and kittens within the Dominion. Of these, 22 cats were returned to their home areas where they will be cared for by residents and continue as working cats, 3 kittens have been placed into permanent homes, and 2 kittens are in foster homes awaiting adoption. Also, 2 abandoned cats were received from Dominion Security; both have been placed into adoptive homes.

In addition, DAAG has trapped, neutered, and vaccinated 20 cats and kittens in areas bordering the Dominion. Of these, 18 cats were returned to their “jobs” as working cats and will be cared for by people in the areas, and 2 kittens were placed into homes. By TNRing these cats and preventing kittens, we have reduced the number of cats available to roam into our neighborhood.

With the cooperation of the Dominion HOA and residents, DAAG has been able to make significant progress toward its goals of stabilizing the local population of roaming/working cats and ensuring the good health of that population.

THE OUTLOOK NEW DOMINION WEBSITE COMING SOON A major task force comprised of HOA members and select volunteers were assigned the task of determining how we could bring our current outdated web page and content up to ‘‘Dominion’’ standards and create a site that would improve resident participation.

For about a year, HOA Board has been working on updating, upgrading, and making the current website more user friendly. The enhancements to our web site include major improvements to visuals, linkability, security, and content. Additionally, the HOA felt there was a need to make the site more adaptable to mobile devices. The board also looked at ways to use the site to generate a consistent revenue stream to the HOA and make our web site, not only pay for itself, but generate perpetual incremental revenue to fund other HOA annual initiatives. As part of this initiative, the Board felt that, historically, the value of the Dominion Brand has really never been leveraged optimally. Certainly, every resident and the HOA have made both financial and non-financial investments to create value for our properties and the Dominion Brand. Yet, there has never been any strategy developed to create consistent revenues from these investments.

As a result, the HOA team determined that a search should be conducted to identify extremely high quality neighborhood businesses that would meet certain high quality and high image criteria. An in depth search was made, interviews held, and a review process conducted by the Board.

In these candidate interviews, it was made clear and stipulated in their

three year paid contract sponsorship that their visual imprint (PIXEL) on our home page had to be high image, high quality, and its size or location could not detract from the home page content. The sponsor chosen was given sponsorship exclusivity and site visitors could link to their business specific web page. Selection of any sponsor would not indicate in any way HOA endorsement. A very short list of high quality and high image candidates were interviewed. Some showed high interest, some did not.

The final determination was to have one exclusive sponsor for our home page and one exclusive sponsor to our new on line Resident Directory.

Sponsorship cost for the Home Page placement would have premium pricing over the sponsorship on the Resident directory. Kuper Sotheby’s International was selected as our Home Page Sponsor and North Park VW and Lexus will sponsor the Resident Directory which will be launched in the February-March timeframe. We welcome the sponsorship of both of these quality neighborhood organizations and thank them for their sponsorship.

The Website Marketing Subcommittee will creatively introduce our new web site thru various mediums with several application specific ‘‘how to’’ articles and even conduct some ‘‘hands-on training” for residents who sign up. We look forward to the upcoming introduction of the site, your feedback, and, as part of our strategy, put in place continuous improvement efforts for Dominion HOA site.

NEAR AND DEER

If you’ve tried using “deer-resistant” plants in your home landscape, you’ve likely figured out that the label isn’t a 100 percent guarantee. To a famished whitetail, a perfectly manicured yard looks like a tantalizingly tasty menu at a gourmet restaurant, with your freshly planted “deerproof” shrubs comfortably lined up like platters of delicacies. Once deer have established a comfort level and grazing routine around your lawn, they’ll make repeat visits for the foreseeable future. Deer are creatures of habit, but these tips may alter their routine: Cage it – To protect new plants, look into making protective cages. Any new planting will need a temporary cage or fencing for protection until its roots are strong enough to keep tugging teeth from yanking it out.

Create roadblocks – Dense, spiny plantings can make effective barriers (if wide enough) around established trees and shrubs. Agave is particularly effective and makes a nice groundcover, too!

Toughen up your landscape – Aim for the thorniest, oiliest, fuzziest and smelliest plants!

Not surprisingly, these are the most successful landscape plants for the Hill Country: cenizo, sumac, agarita, sotol, lantana, salvia and rosemary.

Remember, a hungry deer will nibble on anything. Protect new plantings with cages and use aromatic or prickly native plants to keep deer from entering your lawn. You don’t want your landscape to become the new trendy eatery for local deer, do you?

WINTER IS CEDAR FEVER SEASON The common cold and the Mountain cedar allergy called “Cedar Fever” often begin the same way: runny nose, sneezing, sinus pressure, scratchy throat, and headache. Yet knowing the difference between a cold and cedar pollen allergies can be very important when it comes to effective treatment options.

Cedar Fever is the popular term for cedar pollen allergies, which strike many residents in Central Texas during the winter months, when mountain cedar plants emit large amounts of pollen. The common cold, meanwhile, is caused by a virus and can occur any time of year. The problem is that the cedar season is also the height of the cold and flu season.

COLD VS. ALLERGY SYMPTOMS “Despite the many similarities in symptoms between Cedar pollen allergies and a cold, there are some clear indications that can help you understand which condition you are suffering from,” says Dr. John Villacis, an allergist and immunologist with The Austin Diagnostic Clinic (ADC). “While a cold and related symptoms may only last a few days to one or two weeks, symptoms of cedar pollen allergies may persist for several weeks or months.”

Another important difference in symptoms has to do with the excess mucus production that both conditions tend to produce. While people with a cold may experience discolored mucus, those with cedar pollen allergies will experience clear mucus production. And while people with a cold may develop a fever, people who have cedar pollen allergy will not develop a fever.

In previous newsletters, I offered tips on how to hit a forehand groundstroke, a two-handed backhand, one-handed backhand and a forehand volley. In this issue, I will give you instructions on how to execute a two-handed backhand volley for a right hander. This stroke is used whenever the player is forced to hit a ball in the air. In these pictures student Mindy Custer demonstrates the proper form and technique. Photos by Charlie Palafox.

Step 1: Ready Position: The body is facing the net. The right hand is holding the end of the racket in a forehand grip position and the left hand is next to the right hand. The left hand is holding the racket slightly tighter than the right hand. Feet are a shoulder width apart and the body is in equal balance. For beginners it is okay to use the forehand and backhand grips for the forehand and backhand volleys. As the player gets stronger and the balls come at a faster speed, it will be best to use the continental grip for both volleys.

Step 2: Back Swing: Since the volley is usually executed when a player is close to the net and there is very little time to react to the incoming ball, the back swing is very short. The left hand will make a slight change of the grip and the right hand will be relaxed and lose. The left shoulder should take a short turn and the head of the racket should align to the flight of the ball. The left wrist should be “cocked” back slightly and the head of the racket should be

above the wrist. Eyes are still focused on the incoming ball. Here I am helping Mindy to feel the hand on the racket to tilt back and still keep the head of the racket above her wrist.

Step 3: Point of Contact: The right foot is now taking a step forward and the racket is making contact with the ball. It is important to keep the left shoulder closed and not rotate the right hip too early. Flexing the right knee will allow more flexibility to find the proper point of contact and give power to the ball.

Step 4: Follow Through: Once the racket has made contact with the ball, the follow through is very short to allow the player to immediately get back to the ready position. The right arm should be close to the body.
