Erin Baker's Project

Little Free Library

Cancer Support Group Meeting Erin Baker is a Cadette Girl Scout and a resident of Southdown Village. Erin is working to earn her Silver Award, which is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve. The project she has chosen is to establish a “Little Free Library” in our neighborhood. In case you have not heard of the Little Free Library, it’s purpose is to promote literacy and the love of reading and build a sense of community as neighbors share skills, creativity and wisdom through reading. The idea is simple “Take a Book, Give a Book”. The library will initially be set up with books that Erin has received from donations. The idea is that it will catch on and neighbors will begin taking books and replacing them with books of their own. It becomes a neighborhood book exchange. You can take a book and keep it, or simply return it when you have completed it so others can enjoy it. The library is currently under construction and will be showing up at the Southdown Pool in August so keep an eye out for it.

COPPERFIELD COURIER Girl Scouts Of San Jacinto Council

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS- The community is bigger now! Due to the administrative changes in San Jacinto Council, we have moved away from our service unit structure. The Copper Creek Meadows community has been created by merging the former Bear Creek, Copper Corners and Blue Bonnet Meadows service units. A team drawn from members of each of the three service units has been at work for several months during this transition process to create the structure for our new community. Membership is drawn from fourteen elementary schools and the corresponding mi9ddle and high schools. The elementary schools served are: Lieder, Metcalf, Wilson, Tipps, and Texas Christian School; Birkes, Fiest and Lowery; Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. The plan is that more people and more resources mean more activities and more fun for all of us! You can read more about these changes in the Golden Link or on the Council website, www.gssjc.org. An open planning meeting was held on July 14. Rally Days (when we recruit new members and leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled after schools are back in session. Look for more information soon!

Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level, and no previous Scouting experience is required. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. We also need adult (over 18) leaders for our troops. We can’t form new troops without new leaders! You need a background check and a little training to get started, but lots more training is available. Our leaders are of all ages, both sexes, and a wide range of interests. You do not need to be Ranger Rick or Martha Stewart (though you may find yourself developing unexpected talents!). Don’t feel that you could make the commitment to be a troop leader? Do you have a special skill that you would be willing to share, or a willingness to help on a limited basis? Please give us a call-we’d like to talk to you! A special event may need YOUR particular talent or skill! Please contact Dianne Massie (dianne.massie@att.net) or call 281-550-9148. The council website is www.gssjc.org.

TWO FAMILIES RECEIVE KEYS TO NEW HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME Thrivent Financial and area churches support affordable home construction Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County celebrated the construction of two more Habitat NWHC homes at a dedication ceremony on July 20, 2013 at 8:30am at Hamill Crossing, a completely designed and built Habitat NWHC neighborhood. The new homeowners, Katherine Garrett and Martha Turcios thanked all those who worked so hard to help them reach this goal and there was an open house of the newly completed homes directly following. Each Habitat for Humanity homeowner puts in what we call ‘Sweat Equity’ by working on the construction site to build their home alongside local volunteers. Ms. Garrett and Ms. Turcios were no exception and both put in well over the minimum of 350 Sweat Equity hours required by the program. They will both be closing on their homes the week following the dedication ceremony. Ms. Garrett’s home is unique because it was sponsored and built by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and area Lutheran churches. Sponsorship is the process by which a church, company or organization gives a financial donation that Habitat then uses to purchase the materials to build the house. This generosity helps increase Habitat’s ability to build more homes in its ongoing effort to eliminate substandard housing here in Northwest Harris County. Ms. Turcios is unique because upon closing on her home, she will be the oldest homeowner that Habitat NWHC has ever had. At 74 years

of age Ms. Turcios has never owned her own home or even had her own bedroom. Ms. Turcios’ home was also sponsored and built by area churches. Ms. Turcios and Ms. Garrett worked hard and formed a warm relationship with the volunteers that helped build their homes and the end result is two beautiful homes that their families can enjoy for many years to come. Through donations of money, materials and volunteer labor, Habitat NWHC was able to build the homes and sell them at an affordable price. Ms. Garrett and Ms. Turcios will purchase their homes with a no-profit loan, and their monthly mortgage payments will be used to build more Habitat houses. “It has been exciting to get to know these two neighbors during the construction of their homes and the completion of the Habitat program. I was talking to Katherine [Garrett] just the other day about how amazing it is that all these people that didn’t even know her before came out and worked so hard so that she and her family could have a decent place to live. It truly is an amazing and awe inspiring process.” said Karly Grilliot, Habitat NWHC Development Manager. If your company, church or organization is interested in partnering with Habitat NWHC please contact Karly Grilliot at kgrilliot@habitatnwhc.org or at 281-477-0460.
