Dress the kids in gold, tie up your sneakers and bring your friends to the Golden Hat Walk for Autism on Saturday, August 17! This family-friendly gold-themed parade and celebration will feature engaging kids' activities and an interactive resource fair! Vendors and activities for the family include: Home Depot, KidBuilderz, Jerry's Artarama, Miss Jellybean the clown, Caricatures by Kevin, music by "Mr. Will" Dupuy, face painting, festival games and much more! The event will also include gluten-free snacks and a free raffle with a variety of stellar giveaways including gift cards from Uchi, Amy's Ice creams, Build-A-Bear, Torchy's Tacos, Sleep Experts, and Trudy's…just to name a few! Funds raised will go directly toward the Foundation's mission and goals - including the establishment of innovative living campuses designed to empower and honor all individuals on the autism spectrum.

Have you ever heard of diaper need? Most people haven’t. Diapers are a basic need for babies and toddlers yet 1 in 3 Americans struggle to afford diapers for their children. While Austin is currently experiencing an upswing in its economy, many of its citizens remain in poverty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 29% of Austin’s children live in poverty (below $24,000 household income for a family of four). Diapers are expensive, averaging $100 a month, and they are not covered by federal assistance programs such as WIC or food stamps. Disposable diapers are typically a requirement of daycare centers so diapers are needed for parents to be able to work. Babies without adequate diaper changes are subject to skin issues, infections and discomfort. Increased crying in babies is linked to heightened stress and abuse in households already stretched by economic woes. The good news is that we can easily alleviate this situation. By providing diapers to those babies in need, parents can work, health issues are reduced and wellbeing is improved. Austin Diaper Bank strives to meet this need. A diaper bank takes donations of diapers and funds to purchase diapers at discounted rates. Partnering with social service agencies that are already helping families in need through comprehensive programs and services ensures that diapers are distributed to the families that need them the most and in the most effective way. Diapers not only provide health and happiness to families and babies in need, but they are also a resource to the partners and organizations to which they are given. Having these diapers as a resource increases the services these organizations can provide to the community. How can you help Austin Diaper Bank assist those less fortunate babies and seniors? There are several ways: • Donate diapers. Meadows of Brushy Creek WEAR BOTH STRAPS

The use of one strap causes one side of the body to bear the weight of the backpack. By using two shoulder straps, the weight of the backpack is evenly distributed. WEAR OVER STRONGEST MIDBACK MUSCLES Pay close attention to the way the backpack is positioned on the back. It should rest evenly in the middle of the back. Shoulder straps should be adjusted to allow the child to put on and take off the backpack without difficulty and allow free movement of the arms. Straps should not be too loose, and the backpack should not extend below the low back. LIGHTEN THE LOAD Keep the load at 10%-15% or less of the child’s body weight. Carry only those items that are required for the day. Organize the contents of the backpack by placing the heaviest items closest to the back. Some students have two sets of books, so as not to have to carry the heavy books to and from school. PROPER BACKPACK USAGE While a backpack is still one of the best ways to tote homework, an overloaded or improperly worn backpack gets a failing grade, according to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Improper backpack use can cause injury, especially to children with young, growing muscles and joints. Injury can occur when a child, in trying to adapt to a heavy load, uses harmful postures such as arching the back, leaning forward or, if only one strap is used, leaning to one side. According to physical therapists, these postural adaptations can cause spinal compression and/or improper alignment, and may hamper the proper functioning of the disks between the vertebrae that provide a shock absorption. A too-heavy load also causes muscles and soft tissues of

the back to work harder, leading to strain and fatigue. This leaves the back more vulnerable to injury. A heavy load may also cause stress or compression to the shoulders and arms. When nerves are compressed, the child may experience tingling or numbness in the arms. WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A BACKPACK Physical therapists recommend the following features when selecting a backpack: • A padded back to reduce pressure on the back and prevent the pack’s contents from digging into the child’s back • A waist belt to help distribute some of the load to the pelvis • Compression straps on the sides or bottom of the backpack that, when tightened, compress the contents of the backpack and stabilize the articles • Reflective material so that the child is visible to drivers at night THE RESULTS Worn correctly and not overloaded, a backpack is supported by some of the strongest muscles in the body: the back and abdominal muscles. These muscle groups work together to stabilize the trunk and hold the body in proper postural alignment. HOW A PHYSICAL THERAPIST CAN HELP A physical therapist can help you choose a proper backpack and fit it specifically to your child. Children come in all shapes and sizes, and some have physical limitations that require special adaptations. Additionally, a physical therapist can help improve posture problems, correct muscle imbalances, and treat pain that can result from improper backpack use. Physical therapists can also design individualized fitness programs to help children get strong and stay strong – and carry their own loads. SPICEWOOD, TX (May 15, 2013) – It’s only natural that the Spicewood Arts Society is branding its new 2013-2014 “Season Capriccio.” After all, the nonprofit group shares the same attributes with the musical term: quick, improvisational and spirited. “We’ve planned another irresistible itinerary of concerts for our new season,” confirmed Martha Norwood, outgoing president of the 13-year-old, nonprofit arts organization whose motto is: “The Home for the Arts in the Hill Country.” In addition to six regular concerts featuring a broad range of musical artists, the Society is offering its autumn Arts Round-up (Oct. 19-20); a “bonus performance” featuring popular pianist Doug Montgomery on Nov. 15; a fabulous Fourth Annual February Fundraiser for scholarships, and four adventurous Art Treks throughout the year. “This past season (“Accelerando”) was about stepping up our visibility, our credibility and our community involvement,” Norwood emphasized. “Thanks to our more than 225 loyal members, our generous sponsors and our timely advertisers, we achieved those goals and more.
