FIRED UP!

Teresa Triche of Houston and Terri Mitchell of Bee Cave recently held an aquatic fitness fundraiser for the Lake Travis Fire and Rescue Community Foundation. Their FIIRED UP event, Fun, Intense, Intervals, Resistance and Endurance in Deep Water for Ultimate Power, included deep water running and shallow water strengthening exercises. $700 was raised to go towards equipment and continuing education for the firefighters. Triche and Mitchell are aquatic fitness specialists. Mitchell just returned from working with US Marines on a cross training program for those with musculoskeletal injuries. The aquatic program provides the Marines with an optional workout when they are injured. The mission of the Lake Travis Fire Rescue Community Foundation, a 501 (C) 3 organization, is to provide community awareness, funding and resources for the Lake Travis Fire Rescue, necessary to maintain the highest level of service possible, safeguarding the life, property and the environment.

LTlov’s School Supplies Drive The 2013 PackaBackpack School Supplies Drive was an unprecedented success! For the fourth straight year, the Lake Travis community came together to donate basic supplies to help low income LTISD students succeed this year in school! With cash donations totaling just over $2000 and the help of Best Buy at Bee Caves we were also able to gift 42 personal headsets to Lake Travis Elementary School, 40 flash drives to Hudson Bend Middle School and 15 graphing calculators to the Lake Travis High School library lending program. A huge outpouring of basic school supplies were donated and distributed through the Lake Travis School District Health and Social Programs office. Around Bee Cave Pruning Guidelines for Prevention of Oak Wilt in Texas

NOW IS THE TIME TO PRUNE YOUR OAK TREES

Oak wilt, caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, is the most destructive disease affecting live oaks and red oaks in Central Texas. Most of the tree mortality results from treeto-tree spread of the pathogen through interconnected or grafted root systems, once an oak wilt center becomes established. New infection centers begin when beetles carry oak wilt fungal spores from infected red oaks to fresh, open wounds on healthy oaks. Wounds include any damage caused by wind, hail, vehicles, construction, squirrels, birds or pruning. Research has shown that both oak wilt fungal mats on infected red oaks and insects that carry oak wilt spores are most prevalent in the spring. Below is a brief description of how you can reduce the risk of fungal spread when pruning. • Always paint fresh wounds on oaks, including pruning cuts and stumps, with wound dressing or latex paint immediately after pruning or live tree removal at all times of the year. • Clean all pruning tools with 10% bleach solution or Lysol™ between sites and/or trees. • If possible avoid pruning or wounding of oaks during the spring (currently defined as February1 through June 30). Reasons to prune in the spring include:

• To accommodate public safety concerns such as hazardous limbs, traffic visibility or emergency utility line clearance. • To repair damaged limbs (from storms or other anomalies) • To remove limbs rubbing on a building or rubbing on other branches, and to raise low limbs over a street. • On sites where construction schedules take precedence, pruning any live tissue should only be done to accommodate required clearance. • Dead branch removal where live tissue is not exposed. Pruning for other reasons (general tree health, non-safety related clearance or thinning, etc.) should be conducted before February 1 or after June 30. Debris from diseased red oaks should be immediately chipped, burned or buried. Regardless of the reasons or time of year, proper pruning techniques should be used. These techniques include making proper pruning cuts and avoiding injurious practices such as topping or excessive crown thinning. If you are uncertain about any of this information, you should consult with a Texas Oak Wilt Certified arborist, ISA Certified Arborist, or an oak wilt specialist from a city, county or state government agency such as the Texas Forest Service or Texas AgriLife Extension Service. School News The Lake Travis High School Theatre Arts Program presents the Pulitzer-Prize winning play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart

You Can’t Take It With You In this zany romantic-comedy, Alice, a woman from a goodnatured but decidedly eccentric family becomes engaged to Tony, her boss, a man from a family of rich snobs. Fireworks fly when the two families meet! Mishaps, misunderstandings and miscommunications ensue, but love and family rise to try to save the day. The show will have 2 complete casts doing the play on alternate nights, so come more than once to support the students and community! BRINGING GOOGLE FIBER TO LAKE TRAVIS COMMUNITIES In April, Google announced Austin would become the second fiber city in the U.S. The company plans to have the first “fiberhood” connected to its ultra-fast broadband by mid-2014. Though few details are available on how the tech company will select the first neighborhood to get the gigabit-speed Internet and TV package, one thing is certain – neighborhoods and homeowner associations are a vital key to how the areas will be chosen. Those neighborhoods or areas that have the most people signed up means they will probably be get fiber first. Kansas City was Google’s first fiber city and the company will likely follow their lead on how to choose the areas they serve in Austin. Google based their service on what they call “build by demand model.” Google picked the first

neighborhood solely based on which neighborhood had the highest rate of registrants on a similar site. One of the many traits of the Lake Travis communities is the number of small businesses and professionals who work from home. Ultra-fast broadband would be a plus for many who are not supported by large company broadband systems. Christmas Shop Preview Night benefitting Green Santa

Jaime Bush, owner of Point of Origin, has announced that the popular gift and accessories boutique will kick off their “Christmas Shop” with a Preview Party benefitting Lake Travis’ Green Santa. The Point of Origin Christmas Preview Party began 4 years ago and has become a local favorite, with over 200 guests attending the event every October. “This year will be the biggest and best Christmas event ever” says Bush as Point of Origin moved in April into a larger space (formerly occupied by the Lake Travis Library). The store will have many themed Christmas trees, including Merry Christmas Y’all, Hill Country and Vintage Chic. A team of decorators will work with closed windows and doors for 4 days leading up to the preview party. “The element of surprise is the best part. It’s like Christmas morning to see the wide eye and big smiles on our guests’ faces.” The event will take place on Thursday, October 3, from 6pm – 9pm, and is limited to the first 100 attendees to purchase their tickets. The shopping party will feature appetizers from Alfred’s Catering and goodie bags for the first 25 guests to arrive. The best part about the Preview Party is not only does the store donate a percentage of the sales from the event to the local Lake Travis Green Santa program but 100% of the ticket sales are donated to the charity as well. 2012 Point of Origin donations of over $2,300 helped fund holiday meals for families in need who received a $15 HEB gift card for each family member. Point of Origin and its customers have donated over $7000 to Green Santa in the last 3 years. Tickets for the Preview Party are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at the store or from a Green Santa Volunteer. The Preview Party will be followed by an Open House open to all customers on Sunday, October 6, 2013, 10am – 5pm. Point of Origin is a locally owned gift boutique located at 620 and Lohmans Spur that features gifts, jewelry, apparel and home décor. They collect and distribute toys and food for Lake Travis ISD families in need.

Lake Travis Republican Club Meeting Roger Williams, US Representative for Texas’s 25th Congressional District, will be the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of the Lake Travis Republican Club, to be held Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at the Hills Country Club, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. His district stretches from Tarrant County in the north to Hays County in the south, and includes much of Austin and the Texas Hill Country. Prior to his election in November 2012, Congressman Williams served his country in a number of ways and brings a unique background to Congress. He was raised in the Fort Worth area where he graduated from high school and later played baseball for Texas Christian University. After a brief stint in pro baseball, he began working in the family car business and has owned and operated the business for 40 years. Along the way, he also became involved civically and politically. He served as Regional Finance Chairman for Governor Bush in 1994 and 1998 before he went on to later serve as the North Texas Finance Chairman and National Grassroots Fundraising Chairman for Bush/Chaney ’04, Inc. Williams was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2001 as the Chairman of the Republican National Finance Committee’s Eagles

Program. He has also served as State Finance Chair for John Cornyn for U.S Senate Inc,, in 2002 and as the National Director of the “Patriots” program for Senator Cornyn. In 2005, Governor Rick Perry appointed Congressman Williams to serve as Texas Secretary of State. As Chief Election Officer for Texas, he worked to insure the uniform application and interpretation of election laws throughout the state. The Congressman worked tirelessly to promote economic development investment and job creation in Texas. He also served as the state’s Chief Liaison for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs as well as Chair of the state’s 2005 Base Realignment and Closure response Strike Force. Congressman Williams was elected to his first term in Congress on November 6th, 2012 and was selected to serve on the House Committee on the Budget, along with the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
