CATN Meeting Report September Quarterly

The quarterly meeting of the Civic Association of Terra Nova (CATN) was held on Thursday, September 5, 2013. Homeowners representing four households were in attendance. The meeting opened with Security reporting on a few incidents, which had occurred in Terra Nova during the month of August. These incidents included a report and removal of a non-resident, who was under the influence, a car burglary and the recovery of a stolen vehicle. Director Montes (Clubhouse) reported that a new cleaning company would be brought in to replace the current cleaning service since several problems with the current company had been reported. Director Montes also reported that there was a good turnout for the Neighborhood Labor Day Party. Director Heaton (Recreation) stated that the pool is now closed for the season. She reported that the pool maintenance company and the life guards did a good job. There was only one incident at the pool during the season and the lifeguard on duty handled it professionally. Director Heaton also mentioned the possibility of keeping the pool opened on the weekends during September since the weather continues to be warm. However, since the pool had already closed, the discussion was tabled until next year. Treasurer Matocha reported that Association expenditures are in line with projections and there are no big budget issues. Director Marrs (Trash, Maintenance and Security) reported on a quote for placing taller poles and brighter LED lights in Sabrina Park to discourage overnight camping in the park. Director Marrs also updated the directors on possible measures, which can be taken against a company that improperly installed the concrete expansion joints in the pool area. Old Business: The directors discussed off-season repairs to the lifeguard stands, which need to be done before the pool opens next year. They also discussed adding a spring-loaded gate to the play area fencing, which would provide a pedestrian-passable walkway, thereby preventing damage to the fencing. Fence damage was caused by children passing through on their way to and from school. Andy Armstrong, the HOAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s representative from Community Asset Management (CAM), stated he would have a quote for this at the next meeting. New Business: Mr. Armstrong stated that he would present the board with a 2014 budget proposal at the October meeting. He anticipated that there would not be many changes from the current budget. President Whitten stated that once received, the Board would review the budget and make changes, if needed. Following Board approval, bills for HOA fees will be sent out to homeowners. Proposition to Fund Water Improvement Projects on November Ballot On November 5, 2013, Texans are asked to consider and vote on nine proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution. Of particular note is Proposition 6, which will appear on the ballot as follows: Proposition 6 (SJR 1) The constitutional amendment providing for the creation of the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas and the State Water Implementation Revenue Fund for Texas to assist in the financing of priority projects in the state water plan to ensure the availability of adequate water resources. Explanation: This amendment is a package of water legislation to set up a revolving loan program available to local governmental entities such as municipalities that are sponsoring local water improvement projects. If passed, the amendment will provide a one-time investment of approximately two-billion dollars, which will be withdrawn from the Texas Economic Stabilization Fund (ESF), also known as the Rainy Day Fund, to capitalize the loan program. October Yard of the Month honors go to Ronnie and Roz Keck of 5303 Glenmere Lane. This property features attractive brick pavers, which are used in the walkway and repeated in the trim bordering the driveway. The grass is healthy and neatly mowed, and a nice mixture of plants, trees, grasses and shrubs grace the yard and flowerbeds. Since this is a corner lot, a large flowerbed extends across the front and around both sides of the house, so passers-by can enjoy the contrast between height and color in the flowerbed selections. Please walk or drive by to check out such a beautiful yard. Kudos to the Kecks for a job well done! This recipe was adapted from a five star dish called “Saucy Mexican Chicken”, which can be found at kraftrecipes.com. The leftovers make G R E AT c h i c k e n burritos for lunch (or dinner – if you need a quick-fix dinner) the next day. Susan Tsujimoto, Editor

Saucy “Seasoned” Mexican Chicken 1 lb chicken tenders 1 T taco seasoning 1 T vegetable oil ½ c onion, diced 1 c salsa 1 can black bean, drained and rinsed ½ c chicken broth or water 1 c cheddar cheese, shredded 1. Heat oil in nonstick skillet. 2. Cut chicken into bite size pieces. Sprinkle chicken with taco seasoning, and toss to make sure it is well coated. 3. Cook chicken in skillet on medium-high heat approximately 4 min. on each side or until browned on both sides. 4. Add salsa, beans and water. Bring to boil; cover. Simmer on medium-low heat 5 min. or until chicken is done (165ºF). 5. Top with cheese. Remove from heat. Let stand, covered, 5 min. or until cheese is melted. 6. Serve over brown rice. Corn makes a nice side dish.

Day 2 recipe – Chicken Burritos Pull chicken out of sauce and mash beans with a potato masher. Add chicken back to sauce and heat the mixture along with leftover rice in a microwave. Warm 10” flour tortillas in the microwave. Spoon chicken and bean mixture and rice onto pre-warmed tortillas. Add some shredded lettuce (iceberg or romaine). Add a little more cheese, maybe some sour cream and/or avocado, if you wish. Roll up burrito and enjoy!!
