Cypress, Tx, October 14, 2013– Miss Cy-Fair Houston is ready for its 5th anniversary in February 2014 with new leadership. The Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce began the pageant in 2010 as a family-friendly event aimed at raising scholarships and empowering young women and girls to achieve their goals. Over the last few years, the pageant has continued to grow and gain support. The Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the Miss Cy-Fair Houston Pageant will continue to be a great community event under the direction of the newly formed Miss Cy-Fair Houston Organization with the leadership of Blaire Pancake and Tiffanie Vaughan. “The chamber has great confidence that with Blaire and Tiffanies’ guidance and past involvement with the Miss Cy-Fair Houston Pageant that the pageant will continue to grow and flourish with the same level

Miss Cy-Fair Houston - (Continued from Cover) is such a fun event and a great way to raise scholarships for some outstanding young women and show the rest of Texas just how talented and outstanding the young women in our area truly are,” says Blaire Pancake. This year’s pageant will take place on February 15-16, 2014 at the Cypress Academy of the Performing Arts. The Miss division will continue to be a preliminary for the Miss America Organization, with Miss Cy-Fair representing the area at the Miss Texas Pageant in July 2014. The Miss (18-24yrs) and Teen (15-17yrs) will compete on Saturday the 15th, and the Miss Houston Princesses will compete on Sunday the 16th. Last year was our first year as a prelim, and Elizabeth Medina, Miss Cy-Fair Houston 2013, represented Cy-Fair at the Miss Texas Pageant, winning non-finalist talent and the instrumental talent award for her piano rendition of the theme song from the Magnificent Seven. “I was so proud of her hard work and dedication. She has represented us well on and off the stage, and now is studying pre-med at the University of Texas. She has really set a high standard for future titleholders,” says Pancake. While the Princesses do not compete at the state level, they certainly do several appearances around the community and have a lot of fun! “This is not toddlers and tiaras. The whole purpose of this event is for

Copperfield Coalition The October 15th meeting featured a special presentation by guests Mack Hoehner and Rodney Finke of their plans for the Miracle League Project at the Copperfield YMCA location along Barker Cypress and Logenbaugh. The project aims to provide families a safe outlet for their special needs children where they can experience the joy and benefits that come from being part of a team and playing a sport. The Copperfield Coalition wholeheartedly supports this initiative and believes its presence will benefit our community and will not be a disruption to nearby homeowners. We urge you to visit their web pages and make a donation toward this wonderful project.

All About the Miracle League The Langham Creek Family YMCA has joined with the "Miracle League" to provide families a safe outlet for their special needs children where they can experience the joy and benefits that come from being part of a team and playing a sport. Increased requests for

programs designed specifically for special needs children led the Y to form the first Miracle League program in the Greater Houston area. In the spring of 2012, the first season of Miracle League baseball at Langham Creek Family YMCA began using a traditional field on a temporary basis.

Children with autism and Down syndrome participate as do children who are blind, deaf or confined to a wheelchair. It is open to all throughout the Greater Houston area, not just those who live in or around the Langham Creek YMCA, and isn't limited to only members of the YMCA.

Volunteers also known as "Buddies" play an important role with all the participants by guiding them throughout the game and being their very best friend. These buddies get to learn the important role of giving back to the community and the blessings that comes with volunteering.

The Miracle League is currently in its third season on a temporary field and participation has been steadily increasing to over 50 players and 200 buddies. However the need for this type of programming for the special needs population is great. In 2011, the US Census Bureau[1]

Questions and Answers Q: How many ball fields are planned? A: We currently play our games on a dirt and grass field by the current pavilion. We plan to build one synthetic field, and rough in another, in the event the program continues to grow. The planned field will serve approximately 150 participants. Q: Where will the additional crowd park? A: The field plans include the addition of a new concrete lot at the back of the property, with an entrance off of Queenston. Q: Isn’t parking on Queenston illegal? A: I hope so, but not sure ~ The additional parking and the time spacing of the games should be adequate to handle any additional cars. Q: Are there going to be stadium lights... if so, how many, how tall, how bright???? A: The new field plan includes 4 elevated lights approximately 35 feet tall. Nothing like you will find at other ball parks or on the current soccer field. The lights are made by Musco Lighting and are

very focused on the field. This should not be visible from a distance. Q: How will drainage effect area homes? A: Should have no effect on the current homes. We have a current detention pond that the water is channeled towards. Our plan includes slightly expanding what we have, to handle any additional drain off. Q: Are all permits in place? A: They are working on that now. Harvey Builders is the contractor for this project…very reputable and experienced. Q: Will games be held throughout the weeknights and the weekends?? A: Current schedule is 6 weekends (Fall & Spring) with games on Saturday at 9:30 AM, 10:30, 11:30. That schedule can manage around 50 participants. Once we expand to 150, we will start having a few games during the week and in the evening. Q; Wheatstone, South Creek and Copper Lakes are bordering neighborhoods and have concerns about the impact on their property values... A: I need to get back with you on this. My opinion is that it will not, since we are building an attractive state of the art complex serving the special needs community. Q: Will the YMCA ball fields operate like other commercial fields and have outdoor food and beverage and outdoor restrooms? A: The facility is planned for our special needs community only. We will have boys, girls and family restrooms. In addition, an area to serve snacks but no plans to have a full concession stand. Membership Please plan to attend our monthly meeting held the third Tuesday of each month at the Copperfield Community Center at 7 PM and learn about the many ways you can become more involved in protecting our property values and preserving our quality of life!
