DECEMBER NEWS Submitted by Sharon Natenberg

As is customary, there was no Board meeting in December. However, to keep you abreast of neighborhood news, this is a report of the Harris County Public Safety Town Hall Meeting held at Northwoods Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, December 10. Officials at the meeting included: District Attorney Devin Anderson, County Commissioner Jack Cagle, Constable Ron Hickman, a Harris County Sheriff officer, and an officer from the Klein and Spring school districts. Attendees were able to question the officials by writing a question on a card. Our local citizens group that has been active in protesting the pending installation of traffic lights and the removal of stop signs along T.C. Jester had many supporters in attendance. However, the panel addressed only a few questions on this topic, dismissing the issue at this meeting by saying there will be a new study on the necessity of the traffic lights. Shannan Rumsey, activist from Spring Creek Oaks, requested to be able to give a statement, but was denied. She was able to give Commissioner Cagle a binder with letters explaining local neighborhood protests of the traffic light situation: the main issue being the probable increased traffic on T. C. Jester and its effect on the safety of our neighborhoods. The TNW Board signed Copyright © 2014 Peel, Inc.

one of these letters as well as Boards from other area subdivisions. This citizens group is determined to continue questioning the installation of the traffic lights. Please contact any of our TNW Board members for more information or contact Commissioner Cagle directly at commissionercagle@hcp4.net. The panel addressed issues of crime. Questions were directed to the school officers as to our students’ safety. The school officers are regulated by the school administrators who are in charge of determining what punishments to give to offenders, of course, except in the case of an actual felony. Both school districts have added officers. Klein reports that they have a dedicated officer not only at the junior high and high schools but also at the elementary schools. Spring has eight (8) officers at Spring High School and five (5) at the other Spring high schools. There are gang suppression units and plainclothes officers that seek information on gang activity. District Attorney Anderson emphasized that there is “zero tolerance” for gang activity. Even though we certainly have crime issues in our area, the Sheriff and Constable reported that crime was actually down over the past 10 months. Nevertheless, they are working hard to shut down those massage parlors that are actually fronts for prostitution. An expert, Ann Johnson, has been hired to detect human trafficking. Game rooms are also an area of high crime because of the large amounts of money that accumulate there. Businesses “tagged” by graffiti are responsible for the removal of this graffiti. A question was asked about the on-going issue of those who stand along Steubner-Airline in front of Wimbledon to be picked up for day labor. Police officers cannot arrest these people unless someone makes a direct complaint. The businesses along SteubnerAirline don’t protest the presence of these people as they are customers in their businesses. Also, those who ask for assistance, wash your windows or ask for contributions as they are standing in the median of our busy streets, are not breaking any laws unless they threaten you. The panel encouraged all to be extra careful in the busy shopping season, even encouraging you to shop on-line. Be careful of leaving your purse or valuables in the passenger seat when your car is unlocked. Hide packages in your car. Be careful using your credit cards as there are devices that can “skim” your card to make a copy of all its information. The Sheriff’s Department has a holiday overtime incentive to encourage more officers to work extra hours. iWatch is a free smartphone app from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office that enables you to turn in anonymous tips, images and videos about crimes or suspicious activities directly to law enforcement. Text 832-241-5355 to receive the download code for your phone. Commissioner Cagle noted that a new location is being sought to relocate our Precinct 4 offices on Cypresswood as this site is very congested. He also commended the Houston Ministers Against Crime for their work in helping families of those who are incarcerated and helping those who are recently out of jail to find re-training and job placement.

A Toast to January "Little January Tapped at my door today. And said, "Put on your winter wraps, And come outdoors to play." Little January Is always full of fun; Until the set of sun. Little January Will stay a month with me And we will have such jolly times Just come along and see." ‒ Winifred C. Marshall, January, 1761-1839

"The first of January rolls around Like clockwork it appears I find its timing most profound As it brings us each new year Right on time, It’s never late Has never ever blown it Apparently this wise old date Refuses to postpone it Drink a toast to January one For annual consistence Its coming means the old year’s done Let’s drink to its persistence." ‒ Stanley Cooper, Happy New Year, 1926

"Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first day of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past." ‒ Henry Ward Beecher, 1813-1887

As the Chamber’s premier event, the Diamonds & Ice Gala will include dinner, dancing, auctions, awards, entertainment, and of course – a diamond raffle! 2014 Gala Honorees Jack and Gloria Thoner were married in 1960 in California. In January 1980, Jack purchased a 434 acre land parcel that is today’s Northgate Forest. Development work began in early 1981, and construction started in 1983. Jack and Gloria moved their family of four children to Northgate in January 1985. Northgate Forest has grown into a shining star in the community. Its development made it possible for the Cypress Woods Medical campus to be placed there. Northgate Forest also led the way in the creation of a permanent 80-foot deep green belt along the Cypress Creek Parkway frontage. Together Cypress Woods and Northgate Forest have created a beautiful destination along the Parkway. Kelsey Seybold clinic (Continued on Page 6)
