SCAM WARNING FOR HARRIS COUNTY RESIDENTS The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public about a scam involving suspects contacting victims by telephone or email claiming to be law enforcement officers collecting debts. The scammer will try to intimidate the victim by threatening to put the victim in jail if the money is not paid. The impersonator will ask the victim to purchase pre-paid gift cards and provide him/her with the card information when he/she calls back. In most cases, the victim has no knowledge of any debt. In some cases the scammer falsely claims to be a police officer or deputy. However, it is important

to know that the Harris County Sheriff’s Office does not solicit or collect money for unpaid tickets, fees, or any other debts over the phone or via email. If you receive such a phone call, never give any personal information to the caller. Make the scammer answer your questions. Always get a call back phone number and never send money to anyone you don’t know. If you do indeed have a debt that needs to be paid, make the necessary arrangements with the entity to which you owe money. If you feel you have been a victim of such a scam, please contact your local law enforcement agency and the Better Business Bureau.

Top Notch Energy Efficiency A Homeowner Challenge Throughout the Year By Carole Stewart

(HIT) - When the current Home Improvement Time headquarters was constructed more than a hundred years ago, the builders had a limited number of choices when considering frivolous things like potential energy waste and savings on home utility bills. The more important issues of the day were quite likely how to keep wild animals out of the structure while the stone wall fireplace was being constructed by hand—a dual use feature that may well have served as both the cook stove and the primary source of heat for the tall frame structure Less than thirty years later, when the building was relocated some forty feet further back from the main road, there were ever so many changes to accommodate the move, the time, and the needs of the chicken farmers whose hard work would grow the property and increase the need for rapidly expanding energy resources. About Weatherization Fortunately a natural gas well has continued throughout the years to provide some of the heating, and with the advent of efficient electrical HVAC systems, air condition this well-constructed well-maintained multi-used home has a lot of “green” to boast. In the mid fifties, the gas well provided enough natural fuel to pay a significant share of the heating budget. And today, with careful attention to the weatherization tips below, the gas well pay an additional stipend each month as a reminder of the importance of regular attention to weatherization and maintenance of necessary for insulation, the two efficient new hot air furnaces, and the old time-well-maintained instant hot water heater. Important areas to check for energy saving in your own home include the following: • Weather-stripping around all the windows and door helps keep out heat as well as cold • Full attic insulation is well-worth the effort over the long term • Appropriate weather stripping on the windows and attic leaks can make a real difference in the amount of energy consumption
