NEWS FOR THE RESIDENTS OF COPPERFIELD
COPPERFIELD COALITION NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2014
Copperfield area activity has been relatively quiet for a number of months but that hasn’t kept our nearby communities from having to deal with the usual issues, the most prominent one being the constant effort to build low income housing developments in the CyFair area. While we were able to stop the last initiative in our backyard in 2012, thanks in part to Senator Dan Patrick’s help, our immediate neighbors to the northwest and southwest have not gone unaffected. Two such developments, The Lodge on Huffmeister (12423 Huffmeister) and the Catalon (near Queenston and Coventry Park), were both approved by the Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs this past summer. The good news is that thanks to the Cypress Coalition, residents were able to get MUD 61 to deny The Lodge on Huffmeister a water permit thereby stopping the project. The Catalon was approved as well with State Representative, Dwayne Bohac initially supporting the project, but later withdrawing his support after a powerful community turnout in opposition to the project. Senator Patrick again supported homeowners by opposing the project. The battle there continues. Although the Catalon project is not with the Coalition’s boundaries, we have voiced our opposition to the project which would place such as housing development right next to single family homes in the Ashley Grove and Coventry Estates subdivisions.
We welcome our neighbors at the Cypress Coalition. Grass roots community organizations are growing throughout the CyFair area for the same reasons that we formed back in 2004. We all care about our communities and our quality of life. And as it always seems necessary, we have to constantly remind our local and state governments, our public services and our elected officials of that fact. Please give the Cypress Coalition website a visit at: www. cypresscoalition.com MEETINGS
We usually hold meetings the third Tuesday of each month at the Copperfield Community Center at 7 PM but please always check our web site as we occasionally skip months, especially during the summer vacation period. Everyone is welcome to join us to learn about the many ways you can become more involved in protecting our property values and preserving our quality of life! MEMBERSHIP
Please join the effort by becoming a member at: www. copperfieldcoalition.com. Resident membership is only $25 per year and business membership is only $250 per year! Please join us today. Look out for our NEW website – it launches this month, September 2014.

COPPERFIELD COURIER “LSC-CyFair President Dr. Audre Levy Shares Outlook for Lone Star College – CyFair with CYFEN Luncheon Guests” Attend the Cy-Fair Express Network (CYFEN) luncheon Oct. 23 and have the opportunity to hear this month’s keynote speaker Dr. Audre Levy, president of Lone Star College-CyFair. Perhaps one of the labels Dr. Levy most proudly wears is that of a lifelong learner. Amazingly, she has five advanced graduate degrees, has worked in all levels of education and has served as an administrator for more than 15 years, with the past five at LSC-CyFair. However, more important to her than her resume of experience and education is how she approaches life. “I believe anything and everything is possible with the right attitude…” and as LSC-CyFair celebrates an enrollment milestone with the 20,000th student registered for the fall 2014 semester, Dr. Levy and her staff’s commitment just got more demanding.
“LSC-CyFair was originally built to serve 10,000 students and we have now reached another historical milestone of 20,000. We have exceeded all expectations and are now four times the size of most community colleges,” said Dr. Levy. “Our rapid growth is testament to the need in our community for high quality affordable education options.” All are welcome to meet Dr. Levy and learn about the continued growth plans for LSC-CyFair at this month’s CYFEN meeting, which begins with networking at 11 a.m. followed with a prompt 11:30 a.m. start of the program. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Thursdays at the Sterling Country Club, 16500 Houston National Blvd. Bring business cards for networking. The meeting cost is $25 with advanced reservations made by the Thursday prior to the meeting and $30 at the door. CYFEN is part of the national organization of American Business Women’s Association, for more information or to register for the luncheon go to:

Cypress 5K
Fun Run & Puppy Parade
Cypress residents can strengthen their families, their bodies and an area school all at one fun event this fall. Cypress 5K Fun Run benefiting the Performing Arts Department at Spillane Middle School kicks off Saturday, November 22nd at 9:00 a.m. Start times will be staggered. The event is the school’s first Fun Run, but you don't have to be a competitive runner to participate. The run, which will go through the Coles Crossing neighborhood, will feature a timed run, a family run for those pushing strollers or wanting to walk, and a dog walking segment as well. While generating funds for the school's award-winning Performing Arts programs is important, event organizers want to use this event to strengthen the school's ties to its community as well as encourage community spirit and fitness. Early bird registration is underway online and continues until November 8th, which includes the cost of a commemorative T-shirt. From Nov. 9nd registration increases to $35 and a T-shirt is not guaranteed. Late registration, which continues until race day, is $40 and does not include the shirt.
