SHALOM Cypress-Tomball Democrats Announce October Meeting

The next Cypress-Tomball Democrats monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, October 21st, 2014. It will be held at Rudy’s Grill & Cantina, 11760 Grant Rd., Cypress, TX 77429, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

October’s meeting will feature several local Democratic candidates who are running for office in November’s elections.

All are welcome to attend the meeting and to join this growing club, which meets on the third Tuesday of every month. Shalom Cypress was established in 2011 by local families seeking a Jewish presence in Northwest Houston. We are the closest synagogue within 25 miles of the nearest synagogue. Many thought that they were the only Jews in the Cypress area, but it turns out that they were wrong! Shalom Cypress has grown to more than 30 affiliated families.

Shalom Cypress Hebrew School is now open for enrollment for the Fall & Spring 2014/2015 year. This upcoming year Morah Alana is going to concentrate on conversational Hebrew with the children. The 1st day of Hebrew School was August 28th, but it is not too late to register for the class!

Klein United Methodist Church hosts Thanksgiving Feast On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2014, the volunteers of Klein United Methodist Church will prepare and serve a hearty Thanksgiving Feast for the community. All will be fed by this outpouring of love for God and our neighbors. Our mission is to prepare a feast for everyone who wants to enjoy the fellowship and companionship that Thanksgiving means to all of us.

The feast will be prepared and served at Klein UMC located at FM 2920 and Kuykendahl. Turkey and ham with all the fixings, along with lots of pies, will be served for all who would like to join us. We will be serving from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. This is the Third Annual Thanksgiving Feast for Klein UMC which served approximately 130 of our neighbors last Thanksgiving.

TIPS ON HOW TO GIVE YOUR HOME AN ANNUAL CHECKUP There's no better time than now to give your home the attention it deserves. Give it an annual checkup before cold weather arrives to help add comfort, save energy and cut home maintenance in the long-run.

When inspecting your home's windows and doors, here's what to check: Inspect interior and exterior finishes: Over time, paint and stain can weather away. Flaking or peeling may mean that it's time to refinish or replace the unit. When replacing windows or doors, consider factory prefinished wood or fiberglass options from Pella, or vinyl options that don't need painting or staining, to save time and money.

Look for damaged exterior surfaces or signs of leaks: Check your sprinkler system to make sure it's watering your lawn and landscape, not soaking your windows or doors. Cracked or deteriorated wood may be a sign of water penetration. Leaks can linger and affect interior walls, floors or ceilings, so look closely for discoloration or other moisture signs.

If you spot a problem, track its trail. For example, discolored trim around a window might actually be caused by moisture entering a ways away. With a leaky roof, water may run down inside the wall and appear at the window. Contact a professional for help in making home repairs.

Clear windowsills and tracks of dirt and debris: Sand, leaves, insects or pine needles stuck in weather-stripping can affect the performance of your windows and doors. Open the windows and clean the opening with a soft brush, like a dry paint brush or vacuum attachment. Do the same for sliding patio doors.

Try opening and closing: Open your windows and doors to make sure moving parts work, and units close properly. Replace worn or broken parts.

Inspect weather-stripping: Re-attach loose weatherstripping around windows or doors, and replace material that's ripped or torn.

Replace or repair broken locks: If locks feel loose or don't work smoothly, replace them. Keep windows and doors locked when not in use. Locks help hold doors and windows tightly, to lock out rain, wind, snow and insects.

of windows, allow excess moisture to escape, while breather holes allow air exchange within certain components. Clear blocked holes of dirt or debris with a wire or toothpick.

Check exterior sealants and caulk on and around windows and doors. Pay attention to areas susceptible to rain, water and extreme sunlight. Remove damaged material and reapply sealant.

Feel for signs of air leakage around the window or door: Improperly installed windows or doors can be drafty, decrease energy efficiency, and allow unwanted moisture into your home. To help save on utility bills and keep your home more comfortable year-round, replace drafty old, leaky windows with new, ENERGY STAR-qualified windows installed properly.

DECODING PET FOOD CLAIMS TO FIND THE IDEAL NUTRITION FOR YOUR FURRY FAMILY MEMBER In the United States, 62 million households have at least one pet, including 83 million dogs and 95 million cats. That's a lot of people who love their pets, and one of the key aspects of caring for a furry family member is providing the right nutrition. Unfortunately, with so many pet foods available, labels and claims can quickly get confusing.

"Pet parents want the best for their pets, which is why cat and dog food makers try to position their pet food as the ideal nutritional option," says Dr. Ellen I. Lowery, associate director of U.S. Veterinary and Professional Affairs at Hill's Pet Nutrition. "But not all claims are equal, and pet parents may find it difficult to interpret the quality of a pet food based on the package.

Understanding some pet food label requirements can help pet parents make informed decisions about the best food to feed their pets."

Looking for three key things can help you find a quality pet food so you can feel confident that your cat or dog is getting the proper nutrition they need to live a long, healthy life.

2. Made in the U.S.A.

When shopping for pet food, always check where the food is manufactured. Those foods that are manufactured in the United States are sounder choices. Foods made in the U.S. are typically regulated at a higher level than those made overseas and owners can feel confident that the quality is higher for domestic products.

3. Manufacturer's name and contact information

Additionally, pet parents should question terms such as 'gourmet' or 'human grade' on pet food labels. These terms are often used for human foods, so marketers place them on pet foods, to make the product appear healthier and to anthropomorphize their pet's food. However, these words do not necessarily mean higher-quality ingredients, and therefore, may not equate with superior nutrition.

"Looking beyond the front of the package will help pet parents ensure their pets are getting quality nutrition," says Dr. Lowery. "And remember to talk to your veterinary healthcare team for insight into the best food for your pet. With so many pet food choices your veterinary team is the expert for your pet's overall health and wellness."
