BOARD REPORT
The Board met on October 9 and minutes will be posted to the Bella Vista website after Board approval in early November. We still have an open position on the board and if you have considered serving, this would be a good time to join us since the term expires May 2015. Email for each board member is found on the Bella Vista website and inside this newsletter. Pool – The Board is reviewing quotes to replace landscaping inside the pool area. Several of the plants did not make it through the drought, so natives will be considered. The pool will be closed for the season on October 31, 2014. Annexation – The City has completed validation of the petitions and they are scheduling the public hearings which are primarily for existing Cedar Park residents to voice concerns about the annexation.
Storage Development – The Board and CPNAN committee members are soliciting quotes for landscaping options at the end of Orsobello Place. The developer has agreed to contribute a specific amount towards the cost and the HOA will vote on contributing the remaining amount for a cost effective solution that will ensure the BV property values near the development are not negatively impacted. Activities – Another garage sale will be held on November 8 along with the 2nd annual Chili cook off. The team lead position for the Recreation/Events committee is currently vacant. If you are interested in volunteering for an important yet fun opportunity, please contact a Board member. Budget – The 2015 budget has been completed and will be printed in the December issue.
BOARD MEETING LOCATION
Monthly Board meetings begin at 6pm at the RealManage office, 9601 Amberglen Blvd, Suite 150, Bldg G, Austin TX 78729 (next to Lifetime Fitness on RR 620 service road) on the first Wednesday of each month, and a notice is posted on the Bella Vista website at least 3 days before the meeting.

WATER CONSERVATION TIPS OF THE MONTH • Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice-makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for significant water savings. • When buying new appliances, consider those that offer cycle and load size adjustments. The recreation commit decided to change the date of the upcoming garage sale to Saturday, November 8th from 8 am to noon. This is the same day Twin Creeks and Volente Hills will be holding their garage sales. Hopefully everyone will have a great event. CHILLI COOK OFF: Please join us for Bella Vista's 2nd annual Chili Cook Off and Fall Festival on Saturday, November 8, 2014 from 4-6pm at our neighborhood park. We will have live music, train rides for the kids and, of course, chili! Please bring a non-perishable food item for our Canned food drive to benefit Capitol Area Food Bank. We are in need of participants to make and serve their chili. Prizes to be awarded to winning chili recipes! Ayusa is looking for Host Families! Hosting an exchange students if a wonderful way for your family to give back together, all while experiencing a new culture. Ayusa exchange students are between the ages of 15 and 18 and come from over 60 countries from around the world. They come with their own spending money and health insurance, and have studied English for at least three years. Most of all, they are eager to learn about your American family! CARPENTER ANTS Carpenter ants nest outdoors in dead wood (tree stumps or dead limbs, fences, firewood, etc.). They may also be found in wood siding, beams, joists, fascia boards or trim on structures. Damage is usually limited since carpenter ants tunnel and nest within wood; they do not eat wood. However, wood can become weakened by carpenter ant excavation. Carpenter ants are large ants that can vary in color from all black to reddish to yellowish or a combination of colors. These ants have one node, no stinger and a circle of hairs at the tip of their abdomen. Galleries in the nest are excavated following the grain of the wood and have clean, smooth walls. Nest locations may be discovered by searching for piles of sawdust-looking material under exit holes. Sawdust is coarse and may also contain soil or sand, uneaten insects as well as dead ants from the colony. Carpenter ants are able to enter homes from tree branches or utility lines touching the home, through cracks and crevices around windows and doors, cracks in foundation walls, ventilation openings or heating and air conditioning ducts. Here are some tips for a carpenter ant infestation: • Remove dead trees and/ or limbs and remove tree stumps from the landscape. Many times you can remove the (possible) nesting sites and get rid of the ants without using pesticides. • Prune trees and shrubs that touch the home. Carpenter ants will often use these areas as a bridge to enter the home. • Replace wood that is water damaged. Carpenter ants are drawn to moisture damaged wood, so make sure to repair any water leaks and replace damaged wood. • Remove wood debris and firewood that is near the home. Carpenter ants may nest in firewood and when it is stacked right next to the home, it allows the ants to enter more easily.
