Board Report JUNE 2015

The Board met in late May and minutes for all meetings are posted to the Bella Vista website after Board approval the following month.

Annexation – All dogs and cats 16 weeks of age and older must be licensed with the City so please visit the website below and complete the process: http://www.petdata.com/for-petowners/ced. Should your pet be lost, city licensing helps Animal Control reunite you with your pet, lengthens your pet's hold time at the shelter and reduces the fees associated with reclaiming a lost pet.

Deed Restriction Violations - Please take the steps necessary to repair and refinish any fences in the neighborhood to avoid letters and subsequent fines.

Spring Projects - Please submit an ACC form to RealManage if you are planning any projects this summer. The form is located on the Bella Vista website.

City Services – Please report issues including abandon vehicles, animal problems, noise, litter, potholes or street lights out to the City at the following website: (http://www. cedarparktexas.gov/index.aspx?page=41).

Neighborhood Watch – Some of our neighbors experienced vandalism earlier this year and the Board would like our neighborhood to have a Neighborhood Watch program. Please send an email to the Board, post a reply to Facebook or join us at a Board meeting to discuss the program and how we can preclude future incidents.

Annual Meeting – The date is set for June 3 and more information will be provided via email and regular mail. If you want to avoid missing any information, please register your email on the Bella Vista HOA website: http://www. bellavista-hoa.com/bellavista/home.asp. Please consider volunteering to serve on the Board or a committee and have a voice in your community.

MOSQUITOES Mosquitoes can be very irritating and disrupt outdoor activities. They also are able to transmit various diseases to humans and animals. Mosquitoes are known to transmit heartworm in dogs and cats, and they can spread encephalitis (including West Nile Virus), Chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, malaria and filariasis among humans.

Most female mosquitoes require a blood meal for egg production whereas males feed on nectar and do not bite. Eggs can be laid on the surface of water or in dry locations that are occasionally flooded by water. Some eggs are able to remain dormant under dry conditions for several months. Eggs hatch into larvae, or wigglers.

Mosquito larvae live in water and feed on organic debris or microscopic plants and animals. Larvae molt into pupae which do not feed. Mosquito pupae spend the majority of their time at the surface of the water, only moving when disturbed.

Many things can help to reduce mosquito problems around the home. Eliminate all sources of standing water. Containers such as watering cans, buckets and bottles can turn into mosquito breeding grounds.

Water should be drained from birdbaths, gutters, flowerpots and pet dishes at least once a week.

Children’s wading pools should be emptied of water

at least once a week and stored so they cannot collect water when not in use. Tree holes should be filled in with sand or mortar, or drained after each rain. Leaky faucets and pipes located outside should be repaired.

Areas that cannot be drained, such as ponds or large rain collection systems, can be stocked with mosquito fish that eat mosquito larvae. Dunks can also be used in these areas. Dunks are a small, donut-shaped product that contains Bacillus thuringiensis var. israeliensis.

The donut disrupts the life cycle of the mosquito and is non-toxic to humans, amphibians and fish.

Avoiding peak hours when mosquitoes are active is probably the best method to avoid being bitten. When outside, wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing with long sleeves & long pants. Repellants containing active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus can be effective to keep mosquitoes from biting when evening activities cannot be rescheduled.

Other products such as citronella candles will also repel mosquitoes, but work best in enclosed areas.

How Does Smart911 Work?

Smart911 allows citizens to provide the additional details that 9-1-1 call takers may need in order to assist them during an emergency. When you dial 9-1-1 today the information received by the 9-1-1 call center can be limited based on the type of phone you are calling on. With Smart911, anytime you make an emergency call from a phone registered with your Safety Profile, the 9-1-1 systems recognizes your phone number and automatically displays your profile on the screen of the call taker who receives your call.

At a time when you may be panicked, or unable to communicate, or it could be unsafe to communicate, Smart911 ensures that the details you would need to tell 9-1-1 are immediately available in the event you cannot verbally provide them. Smart911 is free, private and secure. Please review our Privacy Policy for further information.

How does Smart911 Help Me? The Cedar Park Police Department and the Cedar Park Fire Department are empowering you to make public safety personal using Smart911. In the event that someone in your home calls 911 from a phone number listed in your profile, the information that you have chosen to share will be provided to first responders so they can reach your home faster and be aware of your specific needs ahead of time. By taking the time to proactively register, you are alerting police and fire to details that will help them serve you better.

One Cedar Park resident who signed up offered the following reflection, “My wife and I figure that in an emergency, when seconds count, we want emergency responders to have as much information as possible to get to our home quickly and have knowledge about us before they get here.” He also added that first responders will even know about his 100 lb. dog saying, “I also chose to give responders access to his picture, his ID chip number and the name of his vet.”

What do I need to know about registration?

The registration process can be done using your computer and a phone. The first step to registering is to visit www.smart911.com.

Remember that you can enter as much or as little information as you’d like in each section and your account will be considered active for six months following your most recent log in. As part of

the registration process, you will also be required to confirm your account by choosing between a text message and a phone call.

What else does the Smart911 website offer?

The Smart911 website offers blog entries about safety and safety tips. You can even join a Smart911 email group to receive updates if you’d like.

How can I control who sees my Smart911 information?

Your Safety Profile will only be displayed to a 9-1-1 call taker if you place a 9-1-1 call from a phone confirmed with your Smart911 account, and the 9-1-1 center receiving your call participates in the Smart911 program. You are in full control of the information you enter and the phone numbers you choose to associate with your Safety Profile.

You can change your sharing preferences and Smart911 Safety Profile content at any time by logging into your Smart911 account and clicking on settings.

The Value of Sleep for Children and Teens

As important as food and water, sleep is vital to your well-being. And, if you are a parent, research shows that your children are not getting the sleep they need. According to the National Sleep Foundation, children (ages 6-13) require 9-11 hours of sleep per night and adolescents (ages 13-18) require 9-10 hours per night. A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control found that 31% of teens get 8 hours or less of sleep per night and most school age children are getting 8.5 hours.

For growing brains and bodies, not getting enough sleep can have consequences on school and relationships. Teens and children can have difficulty concentrating when sleep deprived. And, according to the Sleep Disorder’s Center, approximately 1,550 people are killed annually in crashes related to drowsy driving. Often, these crashes are caused by young people under the age of 25.

On the contrary, quality sleep has been linked to improved attention, better mental health, and lower risk of obesity. In recognizing the importance of quality sleep, parents can help children establish healthy sleep habits at an early age. If healthy sleep hygiene is established in adolescents, those habits can carry into adulthood.

Healthy sleep habits for teens and children include: • a set bedtime and wake time that does not vary by more than 2 hours on the weekend • a relaxing bedtime routine such as reading for teens or story time for children • no “exciting” activities at bedtime such as jumping or wrestling for children or computer games for teens • daily exercise • healthy diet • no caffeine after 4 PM If you think your teen or child may have a sleep issue, there are common symptoms you may notice. For adolescents, parents may have difficulty waking them in the morning or observe that their teen is irritable in the early afternoon. Children may require excessive “help” falling asleep, wake many times during the night, or cause their parents to lose sleep. While these symptoms are usually easily addressed by improving sleep habits, more severe symptoms should be addressed with the help of a pediatrician or behavior specialist.

As parents, the value that we place on sleep is a big influence on our children’s attitude toward sleep. Fortunately, there are a lot of practical steps we can take to help our children get the sleep they need. There are too many benefits of good sleep for our teens and children to miss out on them.
