Paloma Lake Annual Meeting The Paloma Lake Home Owners Association annual meeting will be held Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at 6:00pm at the Paloma Lake Amenity Center at 3185 Magellan Way. Sign-in begins at 5:30pm.

The purpose of this meeting is to conduct business related to the Association, in the presence of its members, and will include the Association report. Please note that this meeting is for Association business only.

PALOMA LAKE Business Expo & Fun Day Does your neighbor own a landscaping business? A print shop? A real estate brokerage? Come to the annual Paloma Lake Community Business Expo & Fun Day and find out!

The 2015 Business Expo will be held at the Magellan Way amenity center from 3pm – 5pm on Sunday, September 27.

The expo provides an opportunity for Paloma Lake residents to showcase their businesses to their neighbors. Resident-owned businesses receive priority registration and, if space allows, the event is opened to outside businesses. Every business will also offer a door prize.

Businesses at the event will be allowed to showcase their products and services, although a small amount of “cash and carry” items may be available. Businesses are also allowed to take orders.

To top it off, the Expo will offer a fun afternoon out for the family—including music, a dance party and kids’ activities, snacks and more!

So, come on out and support your neighbors and local businesses!

Noise Sounds Like a Good Idea

Noise is a concern for every resident and because you live in a community, it’s important to understand that some degree of noise is to be expected. At the same time, residents need to consider the consequences of their noisy behavior. To keep everyone happy and maintain civility among neighbors, the association asks that you take a few steps to reduce or eliminate annoying noise.

Be kind and respectful. A little common courtesy makes a big difference. Keep your music at reasonable levels. When hosting a gathering that may cause disruption to your neighbors consider contacting your neighbors in advance. Let them know the date and time of your event and what time you plan on turning down the noise level.

Keep a log. If you’re disturbed by a noise problem, note the times and the nature of the noise. This will help when reporting it to the manager or Sheriff’s department.

Visit your neighbor. If your neighbor is the source of the noise, try a friendly chat. Sometimes people just don’t realize how noise is affecting others. People are usually considerate once they realize they’re disturbing others. And, if your neighbor knocks on your door, listen politely and be willing to made changes to reduce your own noise.

Contact the manager. If a polite request doesn’t change your neighbor’s noisiness, it may be time to ask the manager for help. Have your noise log ready, including attempts to solve the problem yourself.

Reducing noise sounds like a good idea. A quiet, peaceful community, relatively speaking, is a happy community!

PALOMA LAKE Chinch Bugs Have you noticed irregular patches of your lawn begin to turn yellow, straw or copper colored? Even after watering have the patches continued to grow larger? If this is the case, your yard may be the target of Chinch bugs.

Because drought stressed lawns are most susceptible to Chinch bugs, these pests made a late appearance in central Texas this summer.

As Chinch bugs feed on your grass, they block the vessels that move water and food between the grass blade and the roots. The grass blade doesn’t receive water so it withers and dries as if in drought, and the roots don’t receive the food manufactured by the blade. As a result, the grass dies.

The damage caused by Chinch bugs generally occurs during the hot, dry summer months from mid-June through the end of September, and can be difficult to distinguish from stress or death caused by drought.

Although they may be difficult to spot, Chinch bugs are approximately 3/16 to 1/8 inch in length with black bodies and white wings. Younger, smaller nymphs may be orange-pink in color with a white band across their back.

If you think your lawn may have Chinch bugs, it is best not to wait to treat, as they can quickly wipe out a lawn. Refer to your lawn care service or Extension office for diagnosis and treatment options.
