Good-bye, Summer Paloma Lake residents gathered on Friday, August 21, to say good-bye to summer. And, they said it with a Bash! Food trucks, a giant water slide, Kona Ice all around, microbrew tasting, music and games. It’s safe to say, a good time was had by all. Special thanks to M/I Homes for sponsoring this fun event!

Halloween Safety A few safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission can protect children who plan to go trick-or-treating this Halloween.

TREATS Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.

FLAME RESISTANT COSTUMES When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won’t catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source. To minimize the risk of contact with candles or other sources of ignition, avoid costumes made with flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

be clearly visible to motorists. For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car’s headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights. Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Hats and scarves should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children’s eyes.

Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision.

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and flexible material.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Since 1972, the USAonWatch-Neighborhood Watch Program (housed within the National Sheriffs’ Association) has worked to unite law enforcement agencies, private organizations, and individual citizens in a nation-wide effort to reduce crime and improve local communities.

The success of the program has established Neighborhood Watch as the nation’s premier crime prevention and community mobilization program. Visible signs of the program are seen throughout America on street signs, window decals, community block parties and service projects.

The National Neighborhood Watch program empowers citizens to become active in community efforts through participation in Neighborhood Watch groups.

Are you interested in bringing a Neighborhood Watch program to Paloma Lake? Please contact Lifestyle Director, Jan Scriven, at jan. scriven@southwestmanagement.net. Watch for community emails with meeting times and dates.

In the meantime, let’s all keep our eyes open and watch out for one another and be aware of suspicious activity. What exactly is “suspicious activity”?

Suspicious activities can refer to incidents, events, individuals or circumstances that seem unusual or out of place. Some common

examples of suspicious activities include: • A stranger loitering in the neighborhood.

• A vehicle cruising the streets repeatedly.

• Someone peering into cars or windows.

• High volume of traffic going to and from a home on a daily basis.

• Someone loitering around schools, parks or secluded areas.

• Someone tampering with electrical, gas or sewer systems without an identifiable vehicle.

• Strange odors coming from a house or building.

• Open or broken doors and windows at a closed business or unoccupied residence.

• Sounds of breaking glass, screaming or fighting.

• Strangers removing license plates or loading valuables into vehicles from a residence even if the moving truck looks legitimate.

Call 911: If a person is injured.

If you feel like you need the police right now.

If there is a chance of losing property or damaging property.

If there is a chance the perpetrator can escape or evade.

If it is happening right now and something can be done about it.

If there is a chance of someone getting injured or worse.

Tot Time

Join Paloma Lake toddlers, preschoolers, parents and grandparents for Tot Time on the first and third Wednesday mornings of the month, 9am-10am, at the Saint Federico Way amenity center. Story time, crafts, songs, snacks and play—and the activities always change!

Fitness Fun at Paloma Lake!

As the cooler weather of fall approaches, Paloma Lake residents are taking to the great outdoors and to the amenity centers to get their work out on!

A variety of fitness classes have been offered at Paloma Lake, including Zumba, PiYo (that’s Pilates + Yoga), Yoga, and Fit Camp at the Fish Camp, a high-intensity outdoor boot camp. Classes have been offered on Saturday mornings as well as weekday mornings.

Some instructors have plans to offer weekday evening classes if the interest is there, and even a 5am boot camp. Who’s in?

Soon, maybe even by the time you read this, the trail around the lake will be complete. A 5K Fun Run & Walk are in the works for later this fall. So, go for a walk or take a class. Have some fun, get fit, and get to know your neighbors.

to Cut Home Energy Costs This Winter

With cooler weather just around the corner, now is the time to consider ways you can make your home more energy efficient this winter. It’s essential that you know the major areas where you could be losing valuable heat. Below are 10 areas of concern, along with specific steps you can take to increase the energy efficiency of your home.

1. Check exterior doors for their condition. Drafts in exterior doors will cost you plenty when your heating bill arrives.

2. Install automatic closing storm doors. These will prevent heat from escaping if your main door is left open.

3. Install storm windows on your home. Storm windows add an extra layer of protection.

4. Examine your fireplace for performance. If you are a frequent fireplace user, this is especially important.

5. Have your heating system examined by a certified professional. Preventative maintenance is the number one fighter of system problems during frequent-use months.

6. Install new heating system filters. New filters will allow your system to operate more efficiently.

7. Clean heating ducts and vents. A consistent airflow will improve your over-all system operation.

8. Keep heating settings on manufacturer’s suggestions for optimal performance. These recommendations help you keep a consistent temperature in your environment 9. Set your heating system on a controlled schedule. This simple step will keep you from running the heat when you are not home to enjoy it.

10. Examine your roof for wear and tear. This is the most important layer in your home insulation equation.
