Diabetes on the Run In the recent years there has been an increase in patients diagnosed with diabetes, making this the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. These numbers have increased over the years because of the daily food consumption that has been unbalanced or the lack of exercise, and these numbers are projected to increase more than 50% by the next 10 years. Most people believe sugar is the main factor that results in diabetes, however that is a popular myth. Diabetes has a number of different causes ranging from a lack of exercise to genetic factors. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the destruction of cells in the pancreas that produces insulin; this is also known as juvenile diabetes as it is most common in the youth. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the body’s inability to respond to insulin. In 2008-2009, 18,436 youths were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and 5,089 with Type 2. The most common type of diabetes is Type 2 diabetes; about 90% of the patients diagnosed have Type 2, while only 10% have Type 1 diabetes. 1 in every 10 people, 20 and above are diagnosed and for seniors the numbers increase to 1 in every 4 seniors. Type 2 diabetes could be prevented in a wide variety of ways; through these ways, even patients already diagnosed with diabetes could stop or slow the progression of the disease. 30 minutes of activity everyday such as a short walk, riding a bike, and swimming laps could aid in the prevention of diabetes. Aside from the physical activities, a healthy diet and a loss of weight are also ways to prevent or slow down the process of diabetes. Eat healthy, exercise daily, and spread the knowledge of diabetes so you and your community can stay healthy! -Yeonseo Jung and Misbah Ali

1 in 250 Chance to WIN $7,500 with the McNeil HS Project Graduation Fundraiser! Every year at high school graduations across the country, what should be a celebration turns into tragedy for some due to the use of alcohol and drugs as part of the post ceremony festivities. Project Graduation is a 501c3 non profit dedicated to providing a safe, sober environment for the graduates to spend their last night celebrating together. This year, McNeil High School has chosen The Main Event to host their post ceremony "all-nighter" which will commence at 11:30pm graduation night and end at 6am the following morning. Their main fundraiser for the event is a "reverse raffle", whereby a $100 donation gets you in the drawing for a $7,500 prize and many others. Donations are limited to 250, so you have a one in 250 chance (or better the odds the more donations you make!) of winning. There will be a reception and dinner to announce the winner on February 20th, but you do not need to be present to win. There are other opportunities to sponsor the event in addition to this fundraiser. Please help our graduates - all 600+ of them! - have a safe and happy celebration and donate today! For more information on the organization and all of their fundraisers please visit: http://mcneilprojectgrad.ch2v.com/ Go to our Online Store and buy your Reverse Raffle Ticket before they are all gone! Please review and complete this Reverse Raffle document too!
