Bee Cave Messenger - May 2016

Two giants of the jazz world, trumpeter Bobby Shew and saxophonist Elias Haslanger, celebrate the life of their fellow j a z z m a n To n y C a m p i s e a t 7 p.m. Friday, May 6 with an evening of exceptional music at the Spicewood Vineyards Event Center, Spicewood, TX. This is the seventh annual concert honoring Campise, a woodwind virtuoso who mentored many talented young jazz musicians including Haslanger. Local Spicewood residents Paul and Betty Motheral sponsor the concerts, closing the Spicewood Arts Society’s regular season. After a long career, which included playing lead alto sax with the Stan Kenton band, Campise settled in Austin where he led his own band, backed many music legends, and gathered an impressive list of awards. His album “Once in a Blue Moon” was nominated for a Grammy in 1992, reaching top ratings on national charts. Campise died in 2010 following a brain hemorrhage after a fall, but his musical heritage lived on. “Tony’s legacy hasn’t faded,” Paul Motheral said. “His memory and his musical presence are holding up. He’s remembered very frequently and very warmly in the jazz world.” Shew, whom Motheral called “one of the best trumpet players in the world” has been playing trumpet professionally since age twelve. Over a stellar career he’s played with America’s top bands (Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, and more), garnered many Grammy nominations, received the Jazz Album of the Year award in 1982 and was elected to the New Mexico Music Hall of Fame. Haslanger also has a distinguished musical career as a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. He’s toured with world-class artists and played at legendary clubs like New York’s Blue Note. Returning to his Austin hometown, Haslanger founded Cherrywood Records and quickly became an integral part of Austin music. This concert included in season ticket package. Buy individual tickets ($50), online at http:// www.spicewoodarts.org or call 512264-2820. Spicewood Vineyards is at 1419 Co. Rd. 409, Spicewood, TX. Wine will be available for purchase, and complimentary light fare and beverages at intermission. ### About the Spicewood Arts Society The Spicewood Arts Society provides promotion and education about the performing, visual and literary arts in Spicewood, Texas. Formed in 2000, SAS sponsors four performances a year, plus special performances and a special fundraiser concert; Fall Arts Roundup, a fine arts festival; storytelling for adults and children; and scholarships, as well as other activities. ART AND MUSIC IN THE HILLS: SPIRIT IN THE HILLS LUTHERAN FAMILY CAMP

Be Aware of How Much Water You Are Using

This summer a new and exciting opportunity for families is being presented by Spirit In The Hills Lutheran Church. On three consecutive evenings (June 14-16) a family camp will be held focusing on the Parables of Jesus through storytelling, Art and Music. The evening starts at 5:30 with a light supper and concludes at 8 .P.M after a closing dialog. Adults will have the opportunity of a group discussion of the parables and their impact in today’s world. Youth will participate in two sessions: one emphasizing ART led by a noted artist from Lakeway; the other emphasizing Music led by exceptional musicians from the area. More information will be forthcoming. HOLD THE DATES and call 512-294-2884 to leave your name and phone number. You will be contacted for registration information in May. Spirit In The Hills Lutheran Church is located at 3001 R O Drive in Spicewood Texas (corner of R O Drive and Bee Creek. The stated mission of the church: “We at Spirit in the Hills are people diversely centered in Christ, inspired by the Holy Spirit and sent to share God’s love in the world.” ALL ARE WELCOME!

Look at your water bill, and in the summer try to keep your usage under 35,000 gallons for a 5/8” meter and 45,000 gallons per month for a 3/4” meter. But the recommended watering schedule doesn’t seem like enough. Won’t my grass die? Most landscape plants get more water than they need. You can keep landscaping alive even during the worst summer heat and drought by following these tips. • Start Early in the Year!!!! (late March is best) to condition your lawn to being watered two days a week or less. (From October to March, you may not have to water very much at all.) Water deeply 1 to 1.5 inches. This practice will encourage deep root systems and make for healthier, drought tolerant grass. • Use native plants that do well on little water. • Try not to plant or install new sod in the summer months. Give your plants time to get established before facing the summer heat. New grass, plants and shrubs require frequent watering for quite a while. Many new plants will die in the Texas summer heat even with constant watering. • Mulch around plants to hold in water and discourage weeds. • Install efficient irrigation systems. Avoid sprinklers with fine sprays. Don’t water during the heat of the day (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) when 60% of the water will be lost to evaporation. Install a moisture sensor system so that you will not be watering when it is raining. • Use drip irrigation for bedded plants, trees and shrubs. • Adjust automatic sprinkler systems so that they water landscaping and not sidewalks, driveways and pavement. • Don’t water on windy days. • Water only enough to restore water lost to evapotranspiration (ET). • If it rains during the week, subtract the rainfall from your required watering amount. Okay. But how do I know how long to run my sprinklers? Your irrigation professional can tell you, or you can easily figure it out yourself. Set out several empty tuna cans on the lawn about eight to ten feet from the sprinkler head(s). Turn on the sprinkler and mark the time it takes to accumulate about one inch (use the average of the depth in the cans.) Longer watering is only wasting water and costing you money. The District will continue to follow its state approved conservation plan this year, beginning May 1st all residential outdoor watering systems must limit water use to the twoday watering schedule or less. (Commercial and Multi-family customers water two days or less year-round.) Thank you for helping conserve water for today and tomorrow!

WHAT GOES UP… WITH JOSH STIVERS

Most of us had the experience as children of climbing high into a tree only to realize we were not quite sure how to get down. For the lucky ones, our parents were around to help extract us for our precarious situation. For the unlucky ones, you either had the opportunity to get to know your local fireman or ended up with a cast on your arm. Kittens seem to have the same difficulty. I have been reading a book by Ed Viesturs in which he recounts his story of becoming the first American, and only the 6th person in history, to climb the 14 highest mountains in the world. While his story is fascinating and awe-inspiring, his motto for success really stuck home…. Reaching the summit is optional, getting down is mandatory! Ed talks about how often he turned around before reaching the top of the mountain. Sometimes when he could see it just up ahead. The reason for this was due to the fact that based on predetermined rules and principles, reaching the summit would require him to take unacceptable risk. It is interesting to hear how he turns back even when others he is climbing with push on to the summit. I began to think how much this is like financial

planning. We all have different levels of acceptable risk. We all want to reach the summit one day. And we all need a plan for getting back down. I have met with many people over the years who have done a fantastic job of getting up the financial mountain through diligent saving and prudent investing, but interestingly, they have not given much thought to how they are going to successfully navigate the second half of their investment journey. Once you leave employment and no longer receive a steady paycheck, the rules of the game change dramatically. It is at that point, when you are at the summit of your financial planning journey, that it is imperative you have a plan for getting back down the other side of the mountain. I would argue this 2nd half planning is far more important than the planning it takes to accumulate and invest money while working. If you have not considered this fact, I would encourage you to begin to explore how you are going to handle things after you have summited your financial mountain. If you would like to get a different perspective on your current portfolio or investment plan, feel free to contact us at retirebetter@platinumwealthadvisory.com and we can setup a time to visit over a cup of coffee.

Lake Travis Boy’s Soccer Makes History by Advancing to State Finals The Lake Travis High School Boy’s Varsity Soccer Team made history this past weekend when they made it to the Texas 6A State Finals, a first for Lake Travis. Quite the accomplishment considering the Texas UIL 6A Class is comprised of 247 schools. This also broke a 5-year record; 2010 was the last time a Central Texas High School in our bracket made it to the State Semi-Finals or Finals. Lake Travis lost to undefeated Dallas Coppell 6-1 for the state title, Saturday night, April 16th, on a rain-soaked Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. According to MaxPreps, Dallas Coppell entered the finals ranked #1 in the state, with Lake Travis ranked #2. Lake Travis head coach David Bammel expressed pride and admiration for his team, “It was a tight match in the first half. Coppell took the lead at 11 minutes, but our boys kept digging. (Senior) Connor Vilven booted one in above their keeper at the end of the first half taking the score to 1-1.” Unfortunately for Lake Travis, Coppell owned the second half, scoring 5 more goals, 2 off free kicks. The Friday night semi-finals game against Brownsville Lopez was a different experience entirely. Lake Travis led Lopez 2-0 for most of the second half. The first half started with a break-away goal from (Junior) Luke Thompson and culminated with a header from (Senior) Bijan Ahmadian off a free kick from (Sophomore) Cameron Dicker. “We pressed hard and I couldn’t be more proud of these boys”, bragged

Coach Bammel. Lake Travis finishes their pre and post season with an astounding 128 goals scored to 17 conceded. This was a special team that continues the tradition of excellence at Lake Travis,” stated Coach Bammel. Congratulations to the Lake Travis High School Boy’s Soccer Team for an outstanding year.

Giving Back this Mother's Day: How Austin's Largest Baby Shower is Saving Moms and Little Ones from Abuse

What if Mother's Day was a month long? That's the goal of the Austin's Largest Baby Shower is to help vulnerable moms by holding a month long fundraiser through of May. The fundraiser benefits expectant moms and children escaping abuse through the Austin's Children Shelter, Hope Alliance Crisis Center and Dell Children Hospital's Care Team. In 2014, there were 7,509 confirmed victims of child abuse and neglect in Central Texas. Many of these victims are infants, toddlers and expectant moms who leave with very little clothing diapers, food and supplies. Starting May 4th through May 31st, Austin's Largest Baby Shower will hold a city-wide baby clothes and diaper drive benefiting these three great organizations. Several local business are providing space for the baby clothes and diaper drive donation box: Hat Creek Burger Company, BookPeople, BerryAustin, Dragonfly Wellness Center, Canyon Resort, and Eileen's Colossal Cookies. "Community involvement is key for the success of the Austin's Largest Baby Shower," remarks founder, Doreen Hunter. "Austin is such an inclusive city. Without the generosity of companies donating floor space for the donation boxes,

we wouldn't be able to make the event so convenient for everyone." For directions and more drop off locations, visit atxbabyshower.com How Can You Help? There are several ways to give. On the evening of May 4th the 2016 Lifeline Awards Banquet and Fundraiser will raise money for the Lifeline Award winner. The Banquet celebrates the programs and community impact that the Austin's Children Shelter, Hope Alliance Crises Center and Dell's Children Hospital of Central Texas provide. In addition, through out the month there are free community drive events that are festive and family friendly. You can also make a monetary donation online after May 4th. The money goes directly to the nonprofits. There is no middle man. A plus, all online donations are tax deductible.
