Around Lakeway Women’s Club Installs New President and Board of Directors

The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway installed Donna Kumar as president, along with a new executive board, and introduced new standing committee chairmen at a meeting on May 23 at the Lakeway Resort and Spa. Outgoing president Sharon Gilmore welcomed 125 women to a day of ceremony and entertainment from Dottie’s Follies, who performed a dance routine to the Yellow Rose of Texas – the theme for the event. Dee Ann Burns, chairman of the event, thanked her committee and explained that signature roses symbolized friendship and love. Gilmore celebrated the past year’s club activities and thanked her full board for their diligent, faithful service which created all the memorable events that enriched the club and its members. “I have met the most talented people this year. I remember saying that there is no reason to be lonely in Lakeway. Get involved, volunteer, and join one of our 23 special interest groups. You won’t regret stepping out of your comfort zone. You never know what adventure lies ahead. Our Women’s Club is evolving as we approach our 32nd year. It’s important to keep our eyes on the future and be relevant to each other and to the community. We are a team. We are one,” Gilmore said. Donna Kumar presented Gilmore with a crystal gavel as a symbol of appreciation for the kind guidance she demonstrated in her role as club president. Next, Gilmore turned over the presidential gavel to new president, Donna Kumar. In Kumar’s acceptance, she expressed her thanks for the honor and her heartfelt desire to do the best job to fulfill her duties, bring honor to the club, to serve and promote the organization and, lastly, to build new friendships while cherishing and nurturing the ones she already has. “During the past 10 years, I have accepted many different roles and learned so much along this journey. This club has taught me about community and how important it is to reach out to others, to work as a team to promote the greater good of the club. It has taught me the responsibility of showing up with a smile and doing what you commit to do. The group’s mission is to promote social, cultural and intellectual growth. COOL FUN AT LAKEWAY’S

For a swinging time come enjoy one of the best big bands in Central Texas, a large dance floor in an air conditioned ballroom, tables available for your own treats (e.g., champagne and caviar), at a place where you may invite your friends without the hassle of reservations. Do this in the ballroom of the Lakeway Activity Center (105 Cross Creek). The Lakeway Big Band Bash is on the second Monday of each month, from 8 to 10 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2016, is the next event. Admission is free (donations to the band are encouraged). Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra, The Republic of Texas Band, features well known singers (and Lakeway residents) David Cummings and Lisa Clark. This band consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements. “For a great low cost date, go out for a early dinner in a nice restaurant in Lakeway and go dancing at the Bash at 8 p.m.,” suggests Fred Newton, Lakeway Arts Committee chairman. Water Wise We are all extremely thankful for the rains we have enjoyed this year. Thanks to the rains we received in May, the Lakes are full. We should continue to maintain our diligence to conserve water. Our lakes actually have substantial water in them for the first time in recent memory. Vegetation in the area has a green healthy color that has been absent so many years. Lake area businesses are experiencing big crowds that have been missing for so long. Stage 2 restrictions between May 1 and September 30 watering schedule Stage 2, which is twice per week according to the following guidelines: For Odd Street addresses, Wednesday and Saturday are irrigation days. For Even Street addresses, Thursday and Sunday are irrigation days. Commercial customers may irrigate on Tuesdays and Fridays. Stage 2, no watering is allowed between 10AM and 7PM. We are facing the beginning of another hot Texas summer. The Board stresses that even though our conditions have improved greatly. The Board encourages all residents and businesses to continue the good water conservation habits we have learned over the past few trying years. The citizens of Lakeway have been extremely cooperative during the past drought conditions we have had to live through, and we ask for that same conservation mentality as we get through the summer months. Everyone can help by doing their part; here are a few tips we can use: Turn off all faucets tightly so they don’t drip; a dripping or leaking faucet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per month! Check all toilets frequently; a leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons per day! Wait until the dishwasher and clothes washers are full to run them; both appliances use a lot of water. Limit use of garbage disposals; a lot of water goes down the drain. Encourage restaurants you visit to serve water only by request; many glasses of full water are left on the tables. Reduce your time in the shower by a minute or two; it’s amazing how much water Lakeway would save if we all practiced this! We also have low flow shower heads available, so come by and get one (they are free). We have conservation tips on our website at www.Lakewaymud. org. Lakeway MUD notifies our customers when usage is considerably above normal urging them to check for leaks and/or equipment malfunctions. It is possible for the programmed instructions for sprinkler systems, pools, and water softeners to become distorted and cause unwanted water usage. We also receive tips from citizens, city employees, and others when running water or accumulations of water are observed, and we react immediately to the issue to solve it as quickly as possible. We also recycle all of our wastewater; after being treated, it is used to irrigate our golf courses and public medians, which prevents using fresh water for these purposes. (Continued on Page 13)

We also have an extensive beneficial reuse system using recycled water. Beneficial reuse is one of the best ways to conserve water. Our customers get the benefit of using the water for irrigation while helping us get rid of the water, since we can’t discharge into the lakes. We save approximately twenty nine percent of our surface water every year by using recycled water for irrigation; approximately 158 million gallons a year. We have two wastewater treatment plants that serve our customers in Lakeway. Thank you for your cooperation and support. We will be in Stage 2 of our drought plan throughout the summer and will keep you informed of any changes via our website and our banners on Lohmans Crossing and Lakeway Boulevard.

Lakeway Citywide Indoor Garage Sale

Bargain hunters will find the hottest sales of the summer at the next Lakeway Citywide Indoor Garage Sale from 8 a.m.-noon July 30 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. Not only can shoppers buy sports equipment, camping gear, household items, clothing, jewelry, furniture, kids’ toys and other items they would expect to see at most garage sales, but savvy customers also will find Limoges china, mink throws, collectibles, original artwork and even a cemetery plot. “This citywide garage sale is seriously one of the most fun and unusual sales of its kind,” Lakeway Activity Center manager Dallas Gorman said. “I always make an effort to come by and check it out because I know I’ll leave with something unique at a bargain price.” Each 10-foot by 10-foot vendor space includes one table with one chair and is $25 for Activity Center members and $35 for nonmembers. Space is limited. Admission is free, but the Activity Center accepts donations of nonperishable or canned food items in the lobby which will be donated to local food banks and charities. After July 30, the last Lakeway Citywide Indoor Garage Sale of the year is scheduled for Sept. 10. For information or to reserve a vendor space, call the Activity Center at 512-261-1010.
