Upcoming Events:

Please mark your calendars for the following dates/events: NLF Fall Garage Sale Saturday, October 1st National Night Out Tuesday, October 4th NLF Annual Board Meeting Tuesday, December 13th NLF Christmas Event Saturday, December 17th Keep a lookout for more information via email and/or Evite.

Bluegrass, our landscape contractor, has been slowly cleaning up along Spring-Cypress as some trees have died and rubbish started to accumulate. The erosion problem on the far side of Diamond Lake has been filled in and we are hopeful the upper pond wall and erosion area is fixed by the time you are reading this. David Bray is still leading the irrigation mapping along with primarily Pat Durkin's help. As of this writing in August they have now mapped 5 of the 6 multi-zone controllers. At this time they are checking the controller box locations, number of zones for each controller, locations of each zone as well as the number and operation of sprinkler heads in each zone. Some of the controllers have 20+ zones. It takes them about 2 hours to map each controller just to get this information. Give them a big ‘thanks’ when you see them out there sweating. After they map them all, they will return to each to look for each zone's solenoid valves. The following is a list of components that will ultimately be visually checked, mapped as appropriate, and adjusted as necessary (actual pressure testing is not anticipated at this time): • Water meters • Gate valves • Backflow preventers • Pump • Auto controllers [timing, days] • Rain sensors • Master valves on main lines? • Auto control valves [Manifold control valves or singles] • Quick couplings • Inspection of valve boxes and covers • Lateral lines and nozzles • Sprinkler performance • Matched precipitation rates • Water line pressure and volume (Continued on Page 3)

Northlake Forest SNIPPETS FROM YOUR JULY 18. 2016 HOA MEETING The meeting tonight was a busy one with many topics discussed. The pool area and future improvements were discussed at length. The board is looking at having a shaded area over the baby part of the pool, some new landscaping and a make-over for the pergola area that has a lot of wood that is rotting and needs replacing. This will take place after this summer season and, if all goes well, before the next. For this season, there are 2 new blue trashcans and a new splash pad at the pool. We are in the process of getting a new drinking fountain to install. For the tennis players in NLF you will soon see 2 new benches with backs inside the tennis court itself. As of now we have had 37 households who registered to obtain the entry code and use the tennis court. The court has been rejuvenated with a new net, repaired windscreens, new lights and a new coded entry lock. Hopefully, with the registration system, we will be able to monitor the use of the court for the residents. The court is for tennis players only. We have had a wonderful response from those registering and many have stated that this was a necessary step to take in order to keep our tennis court in tip top condition. I know it is really, really hot outside now, but we actually were discussing the community Christmas decorations. It will be here in no time. ENJOY THE REST OF YOUR SUMMER AND TRY TO KEEP COOL. Maureen Cummings NLF HOA Secretary

The Texas Driver (from the Texas Driver Handbook)

FLOODS

• Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling. • Twelve inches of water will float many cars. • Two feet of water will carry away pick-up trucks, and most other vehicles • Water across a road may hide a missing segment of roadbed or a missing bridge. Roads weaken under floodwater, get out quickly and move to higher ground. Better yet, when there’s water on the road, Turn Around. Don’t Drown. Saving your life may be as simple as choosing an alternate route. 4

Cloudy with a Chance of Technology We all know about the clouds that shade the sun and carry rain. Now it’s time to get to know the other cloud—the one that delivers computing power, handy applications, and the ability to share information with others wherever and whenever you need. Like the atmospheric mass that provides its name, the technological phenomenon impacts our daily lives. Cloud computing sounds mysterious and untrustworthy, but chances are you’re already working, playing and surfing in the cloud. If you’ve purchased an iPhone, Kindle, or any smartphone, tablet or computer recently, you’re probably taking advantage of its benefits. If you’ve downloaded a song from the Internet, chatted on Skype or purchased something from Amazon.com, you’ve used the cloud. So, what does the cloud mean to you, and how can you harness its power? It means you can pay your assessments online. You can access association documents and board meeting minutes from wherever you are. It might also mean, for the owners of second homes, that you can tune in to board meetings from the other side of the country. It means you can work from a remote office without losing a beat. You can collaborate with others on a document without having to e-mail the file back and forth. You can store photos, music and files online without taking up precious space on your computer. The cloud offers cheaper, stress-free alternatives to expensive hardware and maintenance. All you really need to take advantage of the cloud is reliable Internet access, but you should carefully consider security, privacy, the provider’s reliability and contract terms first. How secure is your data and information on the cloud? What privacy rules are you subject to? Some cloud services include clauses that allow providers to access and use a customer’s data —often for marketing purposes—and can retain that data long after you’re done using the service. What if the company providing the cloud service goes out of business? What happens to all your information? Do contact terms lock you into one program or application? These are important questions to ask. And though the cloud is relatively new, it’s here to stay and will become even more prevalent over time. Who is your Board?

This month we feature our Board member, Rebecca Dessenberger. She is our Board Vice President and is enjoying being back in the swing of things after battling and conquering breast cancer. She has been happily married for 13 years to her handsome husband Richard Dessenberger and has two gorgeous boys, Calvin and Jeremy. They built a home in Northlake Forest in 2003, and shortly after she became a resident liaison between the developer (Ashton Woods) and the neighborhood. In late 2006, the Board was handed over to the subdivision and she became our first HOA President. She held a series of Board positions for several years before taking a break to spend more time with her family. She has always had a love for our community and enjoys planning events to bring residents together. She is a homemaker and the CFO of her home, spends time as a school volunteer, recently learned how to loom, and like some of us has been determined to get back into shape. We welcome Rebecca Dessenberger to the Board!

Northlake Forest RECIPE OF THE MONTH

The Wrap Of Kahn Ingredients: 1 bottle Peanut sauce- (the best I have found is made by Archer farms and sold at Target stores that have bigger grocery sections. I've made my own but prefer theirs) 1 to 1 1/2 lbs chicken breast cut in small to medium cubes 1 to 2 limes some cilantro chopped 1 cup white rice (jasmine is best) 1 or 2 cups- raw- shredded red cabbage ( you will want to figure out how to use up the rest of the cabbage-though it keeps quite a while) Some bamboo shoots- drained and cut skinny 1 jar spicy black bean or spicy brown bean sauce Good Gorgonzola cheese- crumbled up Thin flour tortillas (the thick ones don't work well for this) Procedure: Rice- cook it according to the directions- when done fluff with fork and mix in some cilantro and lime juice to taste. Set aside. Chicken- I usually cook it in large sauté pan with olive oil, lime juice, garlic (powered or fresh depending on what I have) salt and some pepper- If I'm feeling real energetic I cook some finally chopped sweet onion in there as well. When it is just about done I add the peanut sauce and cook till chicken is done and sauce is heated through. Sometimes I throw cilantro in this part of the dish also. Be mindful that you want some looseness to the chicken mixture some the excess peanut sauce seeps into the rice- yum! The put together: Heat up tortilla over gas if you can (don't microwave it) schmere on a thin layer of the spicy bean sauce put on decent layers of bamboo shoots and cabbage add rice layer add some of the chicken mixture top with Gorgonzola ( I put healthy portion because I love the stuff, but you will want to play around till it tastes right to you.) Roll it up like a burrito, Enjoy!
