WHAT’S HAPPENING IN AND AROUND OUR NEIGHBORHOOD Karen Calvert, HOA Communications
Wondering what’s going on in and around our neighborhood? Well here are a few things to catch-up on… Cedar Park News Are you a hockey fan? Well you are in luck! The Dallas Stars will be back to conduct a portion of its 2016 training camp at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park. They will hold a pair of practices on Friday and Saturday, September 23 – 24, and will play an intrasquad scrimmage at 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 25. All four practices will be open to the public and the scrimmage will be a ticketed event. Dallas and Texas Stars season-ticket holders will receive complimentary tickets and the general public may purchase tickets for $20. It’s time to trim our trees! If you have walked through the neighborhood during the past couple of months, you probably noticed that many of our trees have enjoyed the summer rain and sun and now have limbs that are hanging over sidewalks and, in some cases, the street. The City of Cedar Park has asked that all Cedar Park Communities trim trees so the limbs are at least 8 feet above sidewalks and a minimum of 14 feet above the street (curb-to-curb). This will allow sufficient clearance for emergency vehicles. The Lawn & Garden Spot Let the fall gardening begin! It’s time to begin your fall garden, including ordering spring blooming bulbs that can be planted in late fall or winter. Here are a few other tips from the experts at www. centraltexasgardeing.net and www.naturalgardeneraustin.com : • Cool season annuals such as petunias can be planted but wait until it’s cooler to plant pansies. • Plant wildflower seeds from September through early October. • Plant shrubs, perennials, and herbs as the temperature begins to cool off. • Fertilize rosebushes to extend their blooming time. • Once this month apply a nitrogen fertilizer to flower and vegetable beds. • Plant broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, chard, collards, endive, kale, lettuce, and mustard.
• Plant native grass seeds. There is a narrow window in early September while the ground is still warm enough for the plants to get established. • Divide perennials such as daylilies, bearded iris, Shasta daisies, violets, wood ferns and cannas. • Plant ground covers. • You can apply a pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn now. Watch for brown patches in the lawn. Fall is the prime season for fungal disease. It is rarely fatal. Check with your garden center for local remedies.
