Don’t Let Thieves Ruin Your Holiday by Ron Urias Our neighborhood happens to be located in an area that is very porous. There are SO MANY ways to get in and out of Sendera quickly that burglars and thieves find it easy to target our subdivision. Be careful not to become a victim of burglary or theft during the holiday season. If you plan to travel, please don’t load your vehicle in plain sight in the driveway. Yellowing newspapers in the driveway also tells the whole world you are not home. Leave lights on while you're traveling so that it appears someone might be home at night. Have your neighbors remove door hangers, too. The best deterrent is the neighbors who live right by you. Let them know you're out of town and have them keep an eye out on your house. One of my close neighbors asked her neighbors to park their truck in her driveway while she was gone for a few days. More importantly, if you see a suspicious vehicle in the area, CALL THE COPS! I've heard over and over "Well, I thought they looked
out of place carrying things out of my neighbors house...I should have called the police.” Better to err on the side of caution. Unfortunately, stolen packages are also a normal thing. I wish it weren't so, but there are people who target your mail during the holidays. You can prevent this, depending on whom you use for delivery. UPS and FedEx both have delivery options that allow you to control how and when your package is delivered or picked up. UPS can hold your package at no charge for up to five days and send it to a UPS Customer Center of your choice. FedEx can leave a door tag in place of delivery and allow you to pick up your package at a specific time and FedEx location. These options will ensure you dutifully receive the hand-sewn afghan from your grandma or that gift you are going to return once the stores become less crowded. Best wishes from the Sendera BOD!
Sendera Entrance Lights Upgrade A plan to upgrade the electrical systems at each of the four entrances to Sendera was approved. Work will begin before December 1. Once completed, the improved systems will better handle the load of Christmas lights. Copyright © 2016 Peel, Inc.

CALLING FUTURE SENDERA BOARD MEMBERS... We have an opening coming up! by Ron Urias
As some of you long time residents know, our annual business meeting is coming up in April of 2017 (TBA). Would you like to serve our community by joining the HOA Board of Directors? The BEST time to find out if this position is right for you is to attend the monthly board meetings. We usually meet at Bethany Lutheran Church, Room 112 or 121, on the 2nd Tuesday of every month, from 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm. We always have an agenda and every property owner is invited to attend. There, you'll experience the thrill of negotiating contracts, listening to reports, and planning future events. All kidding aside, it's a great way to get your feet wet and learn
more about what goes on in our community. My board position will become open so we need a strong leader to step in and help govern our 813 household membership. Currently I have the pleasure of working with one of the best Boards over the course of my 14-year, on-and-off-again BOD position. So, come to our meetings and spend some time learning about our practices and how we settle disputes and fines. Feel free to contact any BOD member should you have questions or want more information on how you can help Sendera grow into the place YOU want it to be.
It's In There
Association Rules and Where to Find Them A look at the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (DCCR) one bite at a time. by Pamela Kurburski Quick review before we start: • The DCCR document was established at the time the HOA was formed by the developer. It can’t be changed without the approval of at least 90% of members qualified to vote. • Bylaws and Association Rules are adopted and/or amended by the Board of Directors so they can be created or changed by the Board. In October, Todd Moore provided updates to the rules on basketball goals and swim lessons so they won’t be covered in this column. We will look at several others just because there have been some questions posted on NextDoor recently. First, some references. If you don’t have access to the Sendera HOA website, you should just do it. Go to senderahoa.org and click on Sign Up Now, fill out some information and submit. Once you have your password you can access the governing documents under the Resources tab in Document Library. If you’re not on NextDoor, get signed up. The website is at http://senderaaustin.nextdoor.com/ login/ and it’s free. Let’s start with something timely – holiday decorations. In January of 2015, the Board established a policy that Christmas/holiday 4

lighting and lawn decorations are permitted from November 15th to January 31st each year. Also, they must be maintained in good working conditions and appearance while on display. As far as my research can tell, nothing has been established regarding other holiday decorations such as Easter, July 4th and Halloween. While overnight street parking is an issue all year, it is particularly problematic during the holiday season when family and friends often come for extended visits. Originally there was no overnight parking allowed. In 2011, the Board defined overnight as between 11 pm and 6 am. In a NextDoor post earlier this year, HOA Board President Todd Moore said that “past Boards have amended the overnight street parking to not include Friday and Saturday or holidays.” He also recommended that if you have visitors that need to park on the street to notify either the HOA manager or the Chair of the Security Committee (see page 2 for contact information) so that citations aren’t issued. There are rules on noise, garbage cans, fences, rain water collection and several other issues. Now you know where to find them so you, too, can enjoy a little light reading during your spare time. Next up, Sections 3.13 and 3.14 – Vehicles, Mobile Homes, Travel Trailers and Recreational Vehicles. What fun! Copyright © 2016 Peel, Inc.

In the Garden Submitted by Pamela Kurburski It’s December and it’s cold and dark. Well, I’m writing this in early November and it’s still in the 80s, but I’m pretty sure the dark part will be accurate. Although gardens are mostly dormant now, there is still a lot to see and do. Early in the month you can still plant bulbs that will be the harbingers of spring. Herbs like lavender, rosemary, oregano and thyme are very hardy and can be planted now. Be sure and check the maximum size of the variety you are planting so you know how much space to allocate. There are lots of annuals you can plant that only thrive in the cooler temperatures. Sweet alyssum, pansy, snapdragon and lobelia make colorful, low-growing beds or pots. Be sure and mulch, mulch, mulch to protect them. Oh, did I mention mulch? Enough said. When perennials start to drop their leaves, you need to resist the urge to immediately prune them
to the ground. Wait until at least mid-February to cut them back. As resistant as they are to cold, keeping them whole until at least late winter will protect the inner plant and not encourage new growth that can freeze. Learn to enjoy the architecture of the branches. In October, we met at a fantastic garden that has many beds with an incredible array of plants both decorative and edible. Colorful and playful garden art enhances every part of the large backyard. As a garden craft project, we used branches supplied by a couple of the members from their own gardens. We decorated the branches with bats made from black ribbon and plastic eyes. Just in time for Halloween. Sendera Garden Club meets on the third Thursday of each month. If you would like to join us, please call me at 512-940-8430 to find out when and where our next meeting will be held.
