Lakeway Municipal Utility District: Welcoming the New Year with New Systems

The Staff and Board at Lakeway MUD has been investigating the possibility of upgrading our Billing System for several years. We have been on the same system for over 20 years, and there are limitations that are frustrating for us and our Tax Payers and Customers. After an extensive and difficult search for a billing solution that aligns with our goal of providing exceptional public service, Lakeway Municipal Utility District is pleased to announce the selection of Continental Utility Solutions, Inc. (CUSI). CUSI is a leading provider of utility billing software to the public sector, and Lakeway MUD has contracted to purchase and implement UMS.net – the most advanced Utility Billing and Customer Information System (CIS) on the market today. UMS.net was developed using Microsoft’s .Net toolset and will provide Lakeway MUD with state-of the-art technology to improve customer service, operational efficiency and better manage data across departments in providing water and sewer service to approximately 4,300 customers in Lakeway. The utility billing software implementation will incorporate several modules available within the entire UMS.net CIS solution including CUSI’s Customer

Payment Web Portal, AMR Interface Module, Accounting Interface Module, and the Electronic Payment Module. All of these new and improved features will provide information much faster and with greater reliability. We are excited about our selection of UMS.net and are pleased with the progress of the implementation thus far. Leveraging the technology of our new CIS/Billing system will result in efficiency gains that ensure we can continue delivering quality water and sewer service at the lowest cost to our customers. We are equally pleased with our selection of CUSI as our implementation partner. Their experience in delivering professional training, data conversion, and project management services to utility districts like ours will be a key component of a successful implementation. The conversion has been in process over the last 4 months, and our new CUSI system paralleled our old system for the February 1, 2017 billing. Once we are satisfied that all data is 100% accurate, we will make the switch and ‘Go Live’ in February; by the time you read this we will likely already be ‘Live’. Our first bills utilizing the new (Continued on Page 5)

(Continued from Page 4) system will be generated and sent to our customers on April 1, 2017. Our new billing statements will be much more user friendly than the forms our customers are used to. The statements will be much easier to read and display comparative graphs so that customers can review their usage trends each billing cycle. The ease of use of the Payment Web Portal will be a welcome change. Customers who use their Bank’s Bill Pay Service will enjoy faster posting of those payments, since they will be converted electronically by the system and post to the customer account more quickly. One minor inconvenience for our customers that use Credit Card Automatic Drafting; each customer will have to go into the new website and re-enter their Credit Card information. Due to the confidential nature of these numbers, they are encrypted and cannot be moved from the old system to the new system electronically. This will be an easy task, and we will provide plenty of information ahead of time to accomplish this in time for the April 1 Billing. Customers using Bank drafting will not need to do anything. Michael Guerriero, President of CUSI, says, “UMS.net is the most advanced CIS/Utility Billing application in the market today. We developed this application based upon the latest development standards and disciplines in the software industry.” He adds, “The results are impressive in terms of product quality, scalability and ease

of use and we are excited that Lakeway Municipal Utility District has selected us as their software provider and implementation partner.” CUSI has over 1,000 clients utilizing their Utility Billing application and they implement around 75 new clients per year. CUSI has been developing and implementing total technology solutions for the management of utilities and local governments. We are able to move to this new “State of the Art” system at a lower cost than we have been paying, so it is a definite win/win for our staff, our customers, and our tax payers.

XCELERATION National Signing Day Celebration of Athletes

National Signing Day, February 1, 2017, was a significant day for a local Lake Travis business. Xceleration Sports Performance Labs is what some consider a Lake Travis area physical training secret weapon. Xceleration boasts the unique ability to give any athlete explosive speed, to precisely apply that speed to the specific sport, and even to tailor their training to the individual position. That might appear to be a lofty claim, but for the 2016-17 school year, their athletes have received 65 D1 offers by February 2017 alone. The Signing Day Party at Xceleration was a celebration of what they consider “their athletes”. Families and friends proudly displayed their new college colors and mascots. Music, laughter, and shouts were testament to the energy in the room. Austin Burrito Company and McArthur’s of Lakeway provided food for this party. Excitement, anticipation, and relief were visible on the faces of these new collegecommits. University flags lined the ceiling, pennants created a colorful stripe down the tables, and Xceleration athletes took their seats, flanked by the Xceleration Trainers. Maleek Barkley signed for Arkansas Razorbacks, Cade Green for Wisconsin Badgers, Carson Pepe for California Berkeley Golden Bears, Mac Humble for Pennsylvania Quakers, Austin Hiller for Northwestern Wildcats, Adi Ford for Wofford Boston Terriers, Cade

Brewer for Texas Longhorns, Max Cummins for Texas Longhorns, Chase Cochrane for Texas State Bobcats, Matt Armendariz for Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (pictured sitting left to right), and via FaceTime, Charlie Brewer signed for Baylor Bears. Matt Neel, the owner of Xcelerations Sports Performance Labs, tells us, “Our number of signed athletes is guaranteed to climb as many of our athletes are currently deciding on offers, and due to the fact that many sports haven’t finished their respective seasons”. Sports like soccer, basketball, baseball, and track and field, all announce in the following months. Matt Neel has been a sports performance trainer for 20 years and brought his talents of speed training and sports performance to Lake Travis athletes almost 10 years ago. The collection of Xceleration trainers are some of the most technical trainers you can find, with multiple advanced degrees, specialties, certifications, and a vast array of real world experiences that translate to unparalleled success on the turf, court, diamond, track, pitch, mat, and course. Training at Xceleration for athletes ranging from 12 years to professional athletes is provided by Daniel Back, Judd Lienhard, Rickey Jackson, Micah Greer, Scott Frost, and Matt Neel (pictured standing left to right, not pictured Aaron Davis).

News You Can Use The Lakeway Players present Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig Moon Over Buffalo is the story of an acting couple (David Cummings and Lauren Linn as George and Charlotte Hay) who are on tour in Buffalo, New York, in 1953 with a repertory consisting of Cyrano de Bergerac and Noël Coward’s Private Lives. Directed by Linda Dobbs (Ghost of a Chance), this backstage farce by the author of Lend Me a Tenor (Ken Ludwig) brought Carol Burnett back to Broadway and also starred Philip Bosco as her megalomaniac, often drunk husband and leading man. Fate has given these thespians one more shot at starring roles in The Scarlet Pimpernel epic and director Frank Capra himself is en route to Buffalo to catch their matinee performance. Moon Over Buffalo is one of those plays that shows the scenes behind the onstage scenes. There are really three plays intertwined with each other. And, being a farce, you have all the craziness that includes doors opening and closing, people hiding in closets, halfdressed actors, near misses in running into people who are hiding,

mistaken identities and mass confusion. Timing is everything...and as the show goes on the timing gets better and better. The Player’s spring show also stars returning favorites Alle Bird (Rosalind Hay), Annette Brown (Ethel), and Clarence Goins (as Richard). Lakeway new comers Hope Carew (Eileen), and Mike Magor (Paul) also grace our stage, while we’re especially pleased to have Rhett O’Hara (as Howard) join us fresh off the same production and role in Round Rock at the Sam Bass Theater! Tickets go on sale Tuesday 2/21, and show dates are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, March 23rd, 24th and 25th. Call the Lakeway Activity Center at 512-261-1010 for tickets, and as usual, seating will be at tables of 10 to allow you to bring lots of friends, food and adult beverages to complete your special evening out. Tickets are $20.00 each, which includes soft drinks and snacks. The doors open at 6:30, with the show starting at 7:30. See you at the show for a rollicking good time!

News You Can Use Heritage Trail Tour Travels through Lakeway’s History Funny and colorful anecdotes will entertain guests as they visit Lakeway’s historical sites on the city’s next Heritage Trail Tour on April 7. Lakeway Heritage Center is now accepting reservations for three bus tours scheduled to leave at 9:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. from the Lakeway Heritage Center, 963 Lohmans Crossing. Lakeway Heritage Commission members will guide each tour that is free and lasts about one hour and 15 minutes. The first Heritage Trail Tour celebrated Lakeway’s Golden Anniversary in 2013, and since then docents have informed and entertained more than 700 participants with facts and humorous anecdotes from the history of Lakeway and Lake Travis area. Some Heritage Trail Tour highlights are: Blocker House #1: Lee Blocker was one of the three Houston businessmen who founded and developed Lakeway. Blocker, the only one of the three Lakeway founders who ever resided here, built three homes on Sailfish street, and each one boasted a beautiful view of Lake Travis. He and his wife, Jean, built Blocker #1 in 1964. Subsequently, the Blockers decided they needed a larger home and built #2 just across the street. Later still, they saw the need for an even larger home and built #3 next to #2. Riding Stables and Airpark: Rugged land was the terrain at the time of the original Lakeway development. Goats inhabited the site of the original riding stables adjacent to the Lakeway Airpark. In the 1970s, Lakeway residents could fly their planes into the airpark, walk across the runway and rent a horse for a ride through the rugged trails. Live Oak Golf Course: Learn how the 1965 drought aided construction of the golf course by exposing the tons of fertile soil used by developers to build Live Oak’s fairways. Years later, U.S. Col. Roy Duran, a former World War II POW and Lakeway resident, initiated a 50-flag ceremony on July 4, 1976, to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial. A parade of golf carts carried the flags up the first fairway at Live Oak to honor each state. The Parade of Flags remains a tradition of every Lakeway Fourth of July celebration. Astronaut Alan Shepard’s Home: The home at 818 Mariner was built in 1966 by astronaut Alan Shepard and his wife, Louise. Shepard made history on May 5, 1961, as the first American in space. In 1971, during his second space flight, Shepard landed on the moon. Lakeway resident Anna-Brita Stevens tells how she gathered with friends and neighbors that day for a potluck dinner and to watch TV coverage of Shepard’s moon walk, but a power outage prevented them from witnessing their friend’s historic feat. Admission is free for the Heritage Trail Tour, but bus seating is limited and reservations are required. Reserve a seat on the Heritage Tour now by calling the Lakeway Heritage Center at 512-608-9533 or emailing history@lakeway-tx.gov. Be sure to include name, phone number, email address, and number of seats desired. 14
