Around Lakeway ANNUAL LAKEWAY TEA BENEFITING HELP OUR WOUNDED NETS RECORD $10,083 Stunning centerpieces, gorgeous hats and special costumes filled the Hills Country Club for the Annual Lakeway Tea benefiting Help Our Wounded on Saturday, March 11, 2017. The amount raised from tea ticket sales and donations is a record setting $10,083. This money will benefit so many wounded veterans, who have valiantly served our country. Almost 180 women attended the high tea with proceeds benefitting Help Our Wounded. Many participants competed for prizes by decorating tables with different and creative concepts. After every guest had voted for their favorite tables, high tea was served. This year Kendra Scott donated beautiful jewelry which was given to all the ladies at the table who donated the most money. Ben Kuenemann donated stunning watercolors which were given to
everyone at the table who donated the second most money. A total of $6,700 was donated at the tea. Help Our Wounded (HOW) was founded in 2009 by Rosie Babin after their son was severely injured in 2003, and she witnessed, first-hand, the gaps in the system. The mission of HOW is to help wounded veterans and their families with necessary financial assistance to ensure the assistance is a hand-up not a hand out. HOW is unique in its ability to respond quickly to the veterans’ needs. “What a stunning group of ladies, surrounded by beautiful tables settings and all for a worthy cause to help our wounded veterans and their caregivers. Thank you for being a part of healing American heroes,” said Rosie Babin. To learn more about HOW go to helpourwounded.org. Ann Neighbors thanked everyone for their contributions to HOW and for making the tea such a success. Door prizes were given out after which Neighbors announced the table prize winners. Council Seats, Police Facility, Road Tax on May 6 Ballot The City of Lakeway will have a City Council election and two propositions on the ballot for the May 6 election this year. C i t y Council candidates Bridge Bertram, Ron Massa and Tiffany McMillan are running for two council seats. Bertram and Massa are incumbents. The two candidates with the most votes will be elected to serve a three-year term. Proposition 1 is for the issuance of $23,065,000 in tax bonds for public safety facilities to include a new police facility project, which would be at the corner of Lohmans Crossing and Lohmans Spur. The city will host three town halls on March 27, April 6 and April 20 for the public to learn more about the police facility project. All three town halls will be at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. For more information about the project, please visit www.lakewaytx.gov/policefacilityproject. Proposition 2 is for the reauthorization of a 1/4% local sales and use tax to provide revenue for maintenance and repair of city streets. This revenue comes from sales taxes; it is not property tax-based. The Tax Code authorizes cities to assess a special sales tax to fund maintenance of their streets and roads. Lakeway receives in excess of $500,000 per year from this revenue source, and the revenue is used solely to fund street maintenance; primarily fresh asphalt overlays. In fiscal year 2013, the city used $477,728 to fund street overlays. In 2014, $438,269 was used for street overlay and drainage maintenance. The revenue from 2015 and 2016 was combined to fund an overlay of Lakeway Boulevard for $904,147. This summer, the city plans to spend in excess of $500,000 to repair and overlay Hurst Creek Road. “The city uses these funds to maintain and repair its streets,” Lakeway City Manager Steve Jones said. “We are required by law to put this referendum before voters every four years in order for the city to continue to receive this revenue.” Early voting is April 24-May 2, and Election Day is May 6. There’s no better way to celebrate Spring than by dancing with one of the best big bands in Central Texas. Enjoy a large dance floor in an air conditioned ballroom, tables available for your own treats (e.g., champagne and caviar), at a place where you may invite your friends without the hassle of reservations. Do this in the ballroom of the Lakeway Activity Center (105 Cross Creek). The Lakeway Big Band Bash is on the second Monday of each month, from 8 to 10 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2017, is the next event. Admission is free (donations to the band are encouraged). Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra, The Republic of Texas Band, features well known singers (and Lakeway residents) David Cummings and Lisa Clark. This band consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Expect to hear a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements. “What a great to celebrate. What is Project Graduation? Graduation is a right of passage for our Seniors, a night to be proud, To celebrate past achievements, and to look forward to their future. Graduates celebrate all night, with adult supervision, in a drug and alcohol free environment of fun-filled activities. Project Graduation is a yearlong program sponsoring approved Senior events including an All Night Lock-In following the Senior Graduation Ceremony. Project Graduation depends solely on funds raised from generous local businesses, student organizations, parents and several fundraising activities. Immediately Following the LTHS Graduation Ceremony, the graduates are transported by bus to a safe alternative to “Party Hopping” and it gives parents peace of mind knowing their son or daughter is celebrating in a safe, yet fun environment supervised by adults. It provides the graduating Seniors the opportunity to share with their classmates an all-night celebration of activities consisting of music, dancing, food, fun, games, and prizes. Visit http://www.ltprojectgraduation.com for more information, sponsorship opportunities and to volunteer.

News You Can Use News and Updates from Lakeway MUD Water Conservation There is a very good chance we are going to have a very hot and dry summer, so conservation becomes even more critical as we face the expected heat. As of May 1, we again enter into the period of time where irrigation is limited to twice per week. As in the past, no irrigation is allowed between 10AM and 7PM. Some will ask why we are limiting irrigation when our lakes are full, but those of us that have been here for a while understand that the next drought is just around the corner and we all need to conserve at all times. The twice per week watering schedule remains the same as in the past, with residential addresses ending in odd numbers irrigating on Wednesday and Saturday, even residential numbers on Thursday and Sunday, and commercial businesses on Tuesday and Friday. If you come by the office we will give you a refrigerator magnet with the irrigation schedule on it. This schedule has proven even in the worst drought years to be effective in keeping our lawns and vegetation healthy and appealing. We have had a very warm winter, in fact one of the warmest winters on record. Because of this we have had above normal usage with customers using their outdoor irrigation systems. Our winter
averaging was December-January and February-March. With summer right around the corner everyone needs to check their irrigation system to make sure it is operating efficiently. What I have found over the years is that since we bill bi-monthly or every two months, customers do not realize how much they are using outside on their landscape until they get their bi-monthly bill. By then they are on another bi-monthly billing cycle, which is 3 months of usage. We can profile your meter to help you understand your outdoor usage; just give us a call. We wish to thank the citizens of Lakeway for their dedicated cooperation in the past around our irrigation restrictions. We have had to issue very few warnings for violations, and the vast majority of those were corrected immediately. Sometimes thunderstorms and lightening can cause automatic sprinkler systems to malfunction causing them to activate at the wrong times. Those are easily corrected when the malfunction becomes apparent, and our customers have been very good about fixing those issues. Thank you for your cooperation and support. We will keep you informed on our website and by our banners on Lohmans Crossing and Lakeway Boulevard. (Continued on Page 13)

(Continued from Page 12) Billing Software Update You may remember from previous articles that LMUD launched a totally new online utility billing system effective February 27, 2017, after months of conversion and implementation efforts by the LMUD Staff as well as the staff of Continental Utility Services Inc. (CUSI), the provider of the software. This new system features enhanced services and options including automatic payments charged to a credit card or bank account, complete usage history and billing history. The new system allows customers to view and pay their utility bill online conveniently and securely, as well as view their account in detail. LMUD customers will be able to change their billing address and contact information, their credit card and/or bank information, and sign up for paperless delivery of billing notices and statement delivery. Our billing that was mailed or electronically delivered on April 1st was the first to be delivered using the new system. The format is much simpler and easier to read than our old statements, and contain much more information about each customer’s account. The feedback we have received from our customers has been extremely positive regarding the billing statements as well as the ease of use of the new portal.
I want to encourage our customers to register as a user on our new portal and enjoy the features of the new system; please go to our website www.LakewayMUD.org and click on ‘My Account’ in the upper right hand corner of the page to get started. We hope that many will opt to sign up for automatic payment of their bill using a credit card or bank account. Our hope is that many will also sign up for paperless delivery of their billing statements. When this feature is enabled, the customer gets an email over two weeks before payment is due with a link to the actual billing statement, and then another email a few days before payment is charged to the card or bank account. This feature saves trees, postage, and avoids lost or late mail. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the LMUD staff for their many long hours and hard work over the past few months to make this transition possible. I want to also thank the staff of CUSI for their support and dedication. Most importantly, I want to thank all of our customers who have cooperated and worked with us in making this all happen. A great job by all! We ask everyone to continue to do their part and conserve wherever possible. We need to work together to protect our valuable water resources.

News You Can Use News for WCID 17 Customers To Conserve Water and Save Money... KNOW YOUR DAYS/KNOW YOUR USAGE Water District 17 will be starting two (2) times per week summer mandatory outdoor watering schedule on May 1st. Know your designated watering days and times and follow the schedule to limit your consumption and save money. FOR ALL CUSTOMERS: NO IRRIGATION ALLOWED BETWEEN 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. CUSTOMERS LIMITED TO 2 DAYS PER WEEK Residential: May 1 – September 30 Commercial: Year Round AUTOMATED IRRIGATION WATERING SCHEDULE Automated: Irrigation by means of a system controlled by a timer or other remote controller. Allowed to water BEFORE 10:00 a.m. and/or AFTER 7:00 p.m. on your designated days Your days based on address ending number: Monday & Thursday 0, 1, 2, 3 (Res) Tuesday & Friday 4, 5, 6 (Res) and Commercial / HOAs Wednesday & Saturday 7, 8, 9 (Res) Sunday no automated systems allowed Note: Customers that utilize automated systems may NOT water the same landscape areas using hose end sprinklers; only hand held hose if additional water is required.
IMPORTANT TIPS FOR LANDSCAPE WATERING: Get on the correct schedule as soon as possible. If you have an irrigation system, make sure it’s in good working order and the settings are adjusted correctly. Check to see if your system is set to run more than one cycle per day. Calculate and understand how much water your irrigation system is using each time it runs a full cycle. You can do this several ways. • Exact Calculation - Shut off all inside uses, take a meter reading, run a full irrigation cycle and then take another meter reading. Subtract the first reading from the second to get the exact number of thousand gallons used per each cycle. • Approximate Calculation - Add the total number of run minutes for all zones then multiply by 12 gallons per minute (average system use) to get the approximate amount of thousand gallons used for one cycle. Examples: 8 zones x 50 minutes per zone = 400 minutes per cycle 400 minutes x 12 gallons/minute = 4,800 gallons per cycle
HOSE END SPRINKLER – ANY DAY Hose end sprinkler: Garden hose equipped with a removable portable sprinkler which is moved from place to place by hand and turned on and off by hand. Note: Only for Customers who do not have automated irrigation systems Allowed any day, no watering between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Notes: • Watering with HAND HELD hose, soaker hose, bubbler, drip irrigation or watering can of 5-gallons and less is allowed • any day, any time • Climate driven irrigation controllers should be turned on • No other water uses are restricted under this Stage (Car washing, pool refills, use of outdoor fountains, etc – allowed) • Variances may be granted under this Stage
If you then water two (2) times per week – 4,800 gallons/cycle x 2 cycles per week = 9,600 gallons per week
14
Lakeway Voice - April 2017
If you water two (2) times per day on both watering days, (2 cycles/ day) you are watering four (4) cycles per week 4 cycles/week x 4,800 gallons/cycle = 19,200 gallons/week 19,200 gallons/week x 4 weeks = 76,800 gallons/month Add the amount calculated to your estimated use in the home (approximately 4,000 – 5,000 gallons per month for two persons) to determine your total approximate usage. If you think your usage it too high, lower the number of minutes watering each zone runs. Should your first spring bill seem too high, pull out this sheet and recalculate your usage. Still have questions; give WCID 17 staff a call to help you out: 512-266-1111.

The recently established Lake Travis Retired Physicians has grown to about 30 active members who meet second Mondays at Flintrock Falls Clubhouse, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no fee to attend, but advance lunch reservations are required. The retired doctors' group first organized in October 2016, in association with Baylor Scott & White Medical Center—Lakeway. At the March meeting, the retired doctors heard from John Redford, executive director of The Harbor at Lakeway, about the memory-care and assisted living industry. The April 10 speaker is Dr. Twisha Verma, radiation oncologist at Austin Cancer Center— Lakeway. On May 6, the group, along with spouses/partners, will enjoy an evening social at a member's home. To join or inquire, contact Dr. Bill Evans of Lakeway, 512-2613536; or send an email to organizer Pat Evans at patevans39@gmail. com. Ideas for speakers are welcome.
