Q: How long have you lived in Lakeway/Lake Travis area? We moved here in 2009. Q: What brought you to the area/where did you live before? We lived in Washington, DC and moved here to be closer to family. Once we started having kids of our own, we wanted to live somewhere more family friendly and have our immediate family close by as well. Q: What do you like most about Lakeway? We love the small community feel and lake lifestyle but also appreciate being so close to downtown Austin with all that it has to offer. AND Santa Catarina. Q: How/where did you meet? We met over a cubicle in Austin while we were working for different companies. That was the beginning of our life together! Q: What are some of your hobbies? We are pretty fitness oriented so we love working out together and bringing the kids along. We love traveling too! Q: Where do you work/what do you do for a living? Tyson works for Oracle in Sales and Lacey coaches Crossfit and runs a group fitness business. Q: What is your favorite thing to do as a family? Travel. We love going to the moutanins, both winter and summer. But on a daily basis we love having family dinners together and catching up on our days. Q: What is one of your favorite family memories? This spring we pulled the kids from ski school and spent the day as a family skiing the whole mountain. We have been looking forward to that day for a long time. Q: Do you have any pets/what kind? We have one dog, a boxer named Stella, and one cat, named Whiskers. Q: What does family mean to you? Family is everything to us. Our family is a tremendous blessing from God and we have learned the true meaning of unconditional love through marriage and children. Q: How would your friends/neighbors describe you? Active, busy, silly and dedicated. Q: What is something you would like to share with your neighbors and community members? Q: What are some of your family traditions? Friday nights at Santa Catarina, summers in the mountains, and pancakes and waffles on the weekends! Q: What is something you would like to do or are looking forward to doing in the next year? We are looking forward to all of our kids being at Lakeway Elementary together and serving the school where we can. Q: What is your favorite piece of advice or quote? “Start before you are ready and before you are good at it. That’s how you get ready and get good at it.” “Jesus + nothing” Q: If you could travel anywhere with your family, where would it be and why? We would love to travel western Europe to hike, eat, and explore. Q: Who has inspired you in life and why? Our parents because they have given us our faith, our work ethic, and our character. City of Lakeway Election Results Lakeway voters passed a new $23 million police facility project, voted City Council incumbents Bridge Bertram and Ron Massa into office, and renewed the city's road maintenance sales tax in the May 6 election. Results are unofficial until canvassed. Incumbents Bridge Bertram and Ron Massa each secured 35 percent of the vote (1,145 and 1,134 respectively) while Tiffany McMillan earned 30 percent (1,006) in the Lakeway City Council election in which the two candidates with the most votes were elected to serve a three-year term. Just over 50 percent of voters (1,062) cast ballots in support of Proposition 1 for the issuance of $23,065,000 in tax bonds for public safety facilities to include a new police facility project. Just under 50 percent (1,054) cast ballots against the proposition. The new police facility will be at the corner of Lohmans Crossing and Lohmans Spur, across from the Lake Travis Community Library. Seventy-seven percent (1,597) of Lakeway citizens voted for Proposition 2 for the reauthorization of a 1/4% local sales and use tax to provide revenue for maintenance and repair of city streets. Twenty-three percent voted against the referendum. This revenue comes from sales taxes; it is not property tax-based. The Tax Code authorizes cities to assess a special sales tax to fund maintenance of their streets and roads. Of the 12,063 registered voters in Lakeway, 2,135 (18%) participated in the May 6 election.

He lives at the Brookdale Lakeway assisted living facility and is celebrating his 100th birthday on May 8th, 2017. He is looking forward to a big celebration with his family and cake with the other residents at Brookdale Lakeway!

Brycen Blinco is a 2017 Lake Travis High School senior. She will be attending the University of Texas San Antonio on a collegiate scholarship for softball. She has received numerous awards and recognitions such as All District Honorable Mention 6A, 1st Team All District 6A, ranked 9th in the nation at the East Coast National Elite On-Deck Combine (2014), selected to the USA Elite Top 30 All-American (2016) just to name a few. She plans on pursuing a degree in Dermatology/ Cosmetic Surgery. 6

Women’s Club Installation Luncheon May 22 The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway will hold its annual Installation Luncheon meeting at the Lake way Spa and Resort Vista Ba l l r o o m o n Monday, May 22 at 9:30 am. The luncheon theme is “Hats Off” to the new incoming board members for 2017-2018 and to the current board for service during the past year. The meeting also gives members the ability to sign up for next year’s Special Interest Groups. All SIGs have a booth and the chairman can discuss with members the purpose and activities to expect. There are currently 24 different special groups affiliated with Women’s Club including 8 book clubs, antique club, garden club, galloping gourmets, dinner club, Dottie’s Follies, ExPats, knitting and stitchery, investment club, out and about special trips, opera, pursuing poetry,

retirement home crafts, Sing Along, single friends, and music and movement classes – a huge variety of groups meeting monthly to serve the broad base of the 507 women who are current members of Women’s Club. The general meeting for members and their guests begins at 9:30 a.m. with a coffee social and Sig group sign ups. Around Lakeway Retired Admiral to Speak at Lakeway Memorial Day Ceremony U.S. Navy Ret. Rear Admiral Judson “Jud” Scott will be the guest speaker at Lakeway’s Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. May 26 at Emmaus Catholic Parish, 1718 Lohmans Crossing. The City of Lakeway, Emmaus Catholic Parish, Standing Military Committee, Lakeway Sing Along and the Lohmann’s Fo rd C h a p t e r o f t h e National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host the

ceremony. This year’s event also will feature a presentation of colors by the Lakeway Police Department’s Color Guard and service flags by veterans of all the branches of U.S. armed forces, a Memorial Day prayer by Father Samuel L. Hose of Emmaus Catholic Parish and a performance of “God Bless America” by Lakeway Sing Along. During the placement of a memorial wreath by Paula Myer, Mike Olsen of the Lakeway Police Department will play “Amazing Grace” and Lakeway Sing Along will sing “Proud to be an American.” U.S. Air Force Ret. Major General Rod Kelly will emcee the event, and DAR American History essay contest middle school winner Katelyn Lieb will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. “Please join us to remember those veterans who gave their lives in defense of our country and our way of life,” Kelly said. RADM Judson Scott Biography Admiral Scott enlisted into the Naval Reserve in 1966 while in college. Upon his graduation in 1968, he was commissioned and began Submarine School. He thereafter served three years with the Submarine Force in the Pacific. He qualified in submarines and served in various billets, including Operations Officer for his submarine. He left active duty in 1972 to attend law school. After passing the bar in 1975, he re-affiliated with the Navy Reserve. He served in various assignments of increasing responsibility and was also competitively selected to command four different reserve units, each of which won awards for excellence and for their accomplishments. Scott was selected to Rear Admiral in 1997. He served as Deputy Commander for the Submarine Force in the U.S. Pacific Fleet, then in the same role for the Atlantic Fleet, with concurrent duties as Director Submarine Reserve, where he was responsible for 95 reserve units across 35 states and all of the 3,300 men and women of the Submarine Reserve. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and multiple awards of the Navy Meritorious Service 8

Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal. He retired from the Navy in 2001 after 35 years of service. He had also practiced trial law since 1975 during his Navy service. He closed his law firm in 2009 to accept appointment as a United States Administrative Law Judge in San Francisco, where he heard and decided over 3,000 cases. Scott retired from the bench in 2015 to move to their home in Bee Cave, where he lives with Ildiko, his wife of 46 years. They have two adult children.

Free Concert on the Horizon at Lakeway Activity Center The City of Lakeway’s Arts Committee will present The New Horizons Band in concert from 4 to 5 p.m. May 21 at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. The concert is free and open to the public. The New Horizons Band is comprised of about 60 musicians over the age of 50. They will perform toe-tapping music that will include some very challenging but beautifully scored medleys from The Beatles and Duke Ellington. The New Horizons Band is under the direction of Glenn Richter, recently retired as chair and director of the Butler School of Music. He is the former Longhorn Band director and professor of instrumental conducting and associate director of academic affairs. The band began in 1998 as part of an outreach program of the University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music. The band continues to receive major support from the school and is very appreciative of the school’s promotion of music in the community. This band also is affiliated with the New Horizons International Music Association, which has approximately 150 bands, orchestras and choruses throughout the United States, Canada and Ireland. News from Lakeway MUD

The Highland Lakes Firm Water Customer Cooperative The Highland Lakes Firm Water Customer Cooperative (the Coop) was formed in 2012 in response to Emergency orders by LCRA. Earl Foster, General Manager of Lakeway MUD, spearheaded the formation of the Co-op and has served as Chairman since inception. The Co-op is comprised of Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Burnet, Marble Falls, Leander, Lago Vista, Water District #17, West Travis County PUA, Hurst Creek MUD and Lakeway MUD. During the drought LCRA was working on the Water Management Plan for Lakes Buchanan and Travis. The Coop was there looking out for the firm water interests. This was a very public and political process. We are hopeful that the revised Water Management Plan will protect the needs of drinking water customers and prevent the Highland Lakes from being drained to dangerously low levels as we have seen in the past. The new plan raises the trigger levels for releases of water to downstream users, which keeps more water in the lakes. “The plan establishes three sets of operating conditions to determine the availability of interruptible stored water, which is primarily used by agricultural customers downstream (LCRA 2015).” The Co-op is actively working on water related issues for the entire

area around Lake Travis. There were a couple of House Bills in 2015 that would have had a profound effect on the utilities in the area and The Co-op was able to work with the sponsor of the bills and keep them out of committee. This year has been challenging again with a couple of House Bills that would have a long lasting financial impact on water utilities. Although the work is not done, The Coop is working to make sure they do not get out of committee. The Co-op is also working with TCEQ on a rule change. This rule will help utilities get credit on their water balance for beneficial reuse customers. Stage 2 Watering Restrictions and Other Conservation Tips Lakeway MUD will move to Stage 2 Restrictions effective May 1 thru September 30, which is twice per week according to the following guidelines: • For Odd Street addresses, Wednesday and Saturday are irrigation days. • For Even Street addresses, Thursday and Sunday are irrigation days. • Commercial customers may irrigate on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Board stresses that even though our conditions have improved greatly we are facing the beginning of another hot Texas summer. During the hot summer months, we can lose up to 2,000 Acre Feet per day from our combined storage. The strong Southerly winds we are seeing combined with 90+ degree heat increase evaporation significantly. The increased usage also contributes to the loss of AF storage. The Board encourages all residents and businesses to continue the good water conservation habits we have learned over the past few trying years. The citizens of Lakeway have been extremely cooperative during the past drought conditions, and we ask for that same conservation mentality as we go through the summer months. Lakeway MUD notifies our customers when usage is considerably above normal urging them to check for leaks and/or equipment malfunctions. It is possible for the programmed instructions for sprinkler systems, pools, and water softeners to become distorted and cause unwanted water usage. We also receive tips from citizens, city employees, and others when running water or accumulations of water are observed, and we react immediately to the issue as solve it as quickly as possible. We also recycle all of our wastewater; after

being treated, it is used to irrigate our golf courses and public medians which prevents using fresh water for these purposes. Everyone can help by doing their part; here are a few tips we can use: • Turn off all faucets tightly so they don’t drip; a dripping or leaking faucet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per month! • Check all toilets frequently; a leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons per day! • Wait until the dishwasher and clothes washers are full to run them; both appliances use a lot of water. • Limit use of garbage disposals; a lot of water goes down the drain. • Encourage restaurants you visit to serve water only by request; many glasses of full water are left on the tables. • Reduce your time in the shower by a minute or two; it’s amazing how much water Lakeway would save if we all practiced this! We also have low flow shower heads available, so come by and get one (they are free). Thanks again to all for your great conservation efforts over the past few years; let’s continue to practice good stewardship of our valuable resources! (Continued on Page 11)

Old Lakeway Septic Systems Lakeway MUD gets calls every week from individuals in Old Lakeway whose houses are on septic tanks. Either their septic tank has failed, or they want to know about the possibility of a central wastewater system for other reasons. Sometimes leach fields may not be on the homeowner’s property. Some want to consider putting in a pool but don’t have room because of the leach field. In the next couple of months we are going to be working on an education program and survey to see if there is sufficient interest to warrant further investigation of the possibilities of offering a community wastewater system to the Old Lakeway (out of District) areas. We will keep you informed of our progress.

Longhorn Village Resident Brings Artwork to Lakeway

Artist Margaret Osburn’s paintings are on display now through June 20 at Lakeway City Hall Art Gallery, 1102 Lohmans Crossing. The free exhibit may be viewed during regular office hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at Lakeway City Hall, 1102 Lohmans Crossing. Osburn was educated at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., and began serious study of art with Townsend Wolfe at the Memphis Art Academy in 1963. Since then, she has studied with Elva Fairchild in Panama, Jack Perlmutter in Washington and various instructors at the Maryland College of Art and Design. Her work has been influenced by extensive travel with her husband in the Foreign Service in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East. Although oil is her most frequent media, Osburn also works in collage, which is her favorite, acrylic, pen and ink and watercolor. She has taught classes in painting and drawing in the United States and overseas. The Pritikin Longevity Center of the Pritikin diet fame has 13 works by her on permanent display at its center in Santa Monica, Calif. She has served as state president of the National League of American Pen Women in both Maryland and Tennessee and is a former president of Arizona’s West Valley branch of Pen Women. In Sun City, Arizona, Osburn was a member of the Palo Verde, Lakeview and Vanguard art clubs and gave several college demonstrations at the Palo Verde group from 2006 to 2009. She also served as program chairman and president of the Lakeview Art Club and was on the calling committee for the Vanguard Group. She also served as publicity chairman for the Palo Verde Club from 2006 to 2007. She participated in regular group shows that were sponsored by the Vanguard Artists. She has received numerous awards through the years, including ribbons in all Sun City annual shows at Bell Recreation Center. Before moving to Sun City, Osburn frequently applied her artistic talent to set and prop design at the Savannah Tennessee Performing Arts Theater with work like a portrait of “Harvey” for the play of that same name. She directed the Dreamweaver’s productions of “Steel Magnolias” and “Dark of the Moon.” Her work has been displayed at the local hospital, library, courthouse and Tennessee River Museum. Since moving to Longhorn Village Retirement Community in Austin, Osburn has continued to display her works through various art exhibits as well as teach art classes to other residents. Aquatic Fitness classes begin Monday, May 1 at the Lakeway Swim Center at 8:30am. Classes are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings all summer, with a time change in June to 7:45am. Cost is $6 for residents and $7 for non-residents. Participants exercise to a variety of music genres, working on cardiovascular fitness, balance, range of motion and fun. Come join us.
