Around Bee Cave FEATURED FAMILY

The DeMonico Family: Lawrence, Karli, Odin and Gray DeMonico

Q: How long have you lived in Bee Cave/Lake Travis area? July will be 6 years. Q: What brought you to the area/where did you live before? We visited Austin 6 years ago and fell in love. We chose Bee Cave for the hill country and the stellar reputation of the Lake Travis ISD. We moved from Virginia Beach, VA and couldn’t be happier. Q: What do you like most about Bee Cave? We love the small community feel. We also love the convenience of shopping and dining. We have a saying “let’s not leave the Cave”. Q: How/where did you meet? We met 9 years ago in Washington, DC, through a mutual friend. Our first date was a blind date where we went to Atlantic City for the weekend. It was either going to go extremely well or be a total disaster. It was amazing! We’ve been together ever since. Q: What are some of your hobbies? I think we would say just hanging as a family is our most favorite hobby. Lawrence spends a lot of time growing our business Pipe Hitters Union and I spend 3 days a week working in a local Emergency Room so family time is precious to us. And most definitely, CrossFit. Q: Where do you work/what do you do for a living? Our company, Pipe Hitters Union (PHU) is a lifestyle apparel brand. My husband, along with a handful of other special operations professionals from across the various military branches founded the company almost 15 years ago. Over the years it has grown into an internationally recognized lifestyle brand and is often featured on television shows and in movies. Most recently, some PHU apparel was featured in the Michael Bay blockbuster hit, “13 Hours, the Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”. We’re super excited to say that PHU apparel is now sold in more than 30 countries around the world. Q: What is your favorite thing to do as a family? Getting away can be a challenge so we enjoy the regular staycation. Our boys really love the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, the JW Marriott in San Antonio and our own Lakeway Resort and Spa. Q: What is one of your favorite family memories? Most 4

Bee Cave Messenger - June 2017

definitely the moment we met, our engagement and wedding day, but our absolute favorites have to be the births of both our perfect boys. Odin will be 3 on the 4th of July and Gray will be 1 on June 16th. Q: Do you have any pets/what kind? Odin and Gray have a puppy brother named Caesar. He’s a 2-pound Teacup Yorkshire Terrier. Q: What does family mean to you? Family is everything to us. The love, comfort and support from each other is what keeps us going day to day. Watching our boys play and laugh brings us the most joy in the world. We have such crazy busy schedules but I think my husband and I will both agree that nothing compares to being home as a family at the end of each day. Q: How would your friends/neighbors describe you? Hmmm…. This is a tough one being as I have never asked this question. I’ll just say that we will always have a cup of milk or bottle of wine for a neighbor in need. As for friends and family, I feel pretty confident we would be described as loyal, there isn’t anything we wouldn’t do for a friend or someone that we care about. Q: What are some of your family traditions? We don’t have many as our children are still so young, but prior to having littles, we used to dress up in theme for Halloween and have continued it with our boys the past couple of years. We are looking forward to creating many more family traditions with our two boys. Q: What is something you would like to do or are looking forward to doing in the next year? My husband sustained a spinal injury in Iraq in 2012. Since then, he has undergone countless medical procedures and two fusion surgeries with the most recent just a few weeks ago. Over the next year, I would love to see him make a full recovery. That would be amazing! Q: What is your favorite piece of advice or quote? My husband would assuredly say, “It’s better to ask for forgiveness than for permission” or… “When in doubt, empty the magazine”. Q: If you could travel anywhere with your family, where would it be and why? We would love to and will be taking our boys on a dog sledding trip to see the northern lights. Moving to Bee Cave, TX has been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. We love our community and are looking forward to raising our boys here. Copyright © 2017 Peel, Inc.

Dear Bee Cave Elementary School Parents and Guardians, After completing a highlycompetitive interview process, I am pleased to announce that I have selected Jennifer Andjelic to serve as Principal of Bee Cave Elementary School, effective July 18. Ms. Andjelic is no stranger to Lake Travis ISD. Between 2009 and 2013, she was a member of our Curriculum and Instruction department where she served as Director of Elementary Academic Services. Ms. Andjelic began her career in public education in 1995 as a fourth grade teacher at Dove Elementary School in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District northwest of Dallas. After serving in the same capacity at Bush Elementary School

Ms. Andjelic earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of North Texas and a Master of Education degree in Administration from the University of St. Thomas. We received 67 applications for this position, and eight candidates were interviewed. The committee recommended Ms. Andjelic and two other finalists to me. These finalists were interviewed a second time by Ms. Patin, Ms. Murphy, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative and Community Services Holly Morris-Kuentz, and me. This interview with Ms. Andjelic, coupled with her references and wide ranging experience, only confirmed the committee’s very strong endorsement. I have already notified the BCE staff of the news. High Noon Auction at the Lake Travis Thrift Shop! If you ever need proof that the Lake Travis community is generous, just stop by the Lake Travis Thrift Shop. Owned by Ladies of Charity – Lake Travis, the Thrift Shop receives donations of from the community, sells them in the shop, and donates the proceeds to charities that serve the poor in our community. Ladies of Charity – Lake Travis was formed in 1991 to open a thrift shop and raise funds to support Lake Travis Crisis Ministries. Twenty-six years later, volunteers work over 35,000 hours per year sorting, pricing, and selling donated items. The success of the shop makes Ladies of Charity – Lake Travis the largest local charity, donating over $250,000 per year to other charities in cash grants, and more than twice that in goods donated to other organizations. Not much goes to waste, as those items that are not sold in the shop are donated to other organizations or recycled. SafePlace, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, Air Warrior Courage Foundation, St. John Paul II Life Center, and various pet charities are just some of the organizations that benefit from items that can’t be sold at the shop. One of the newest events at the shop is our High Noon Auction on the 4th Saturday of each month. Unique and highly sought-after items are priced to sell. Auction items are on display in the two weeks

preceding the auction, and silent bids are accepted during this preview period. If something really strikes your fancy, items are available at a buy-it-now price. At High Noon on auction day we conduct a live auction for items that have not been purchased at the buy-it-now price. It’s a fun event for all the bargain-hunters and treasure hunters in the Lake Travis area, and beyond! Lake Pointe Elementary = Hope for All!

Hope Floats was the theme for the Lake Pointe Elementary School’s craft sale. Why was this theme so important? “We want people to believe that drowning can be prevented if there is education for adults and children. The students at LPE have that hope!“ explained MaryAnne Malicki the co-advisor with Gaye Fedesna of the LPE Student Council. The Student Council chose to raise money for the Colin’s Hope Foundation for the sixth year because the Holst Family is part of the LPE community. Beginning in January, the Student Council worked diligently designing crafts to sell in time for Valentine’s Day with the hope of beating the goal of $1,200. After Alyssa Magrum came to one of our monthly meetings and shared with the students the importance of The Colin’s Hope Foundation, she dared us to raise $1,500. Without hesitation, our amazing LPE Student Council went directly to work, and not only accepted the challenge, but blew the top off of it with a mind boggling amount of $2,268.54! The 2016 - 2017 Lake Pointe Elementary School raised the most money for the Colin’s Hope Foundation in it’s history! The energy and enthusiasm exhibited by our entire student body in their efforts was truly a reflection of outstanding character and a great deal of love and respect for the wonderful Holst family. Colin’s spirit is very much alive at our school and his legacy will continue.
