THE WOMEN’S CLUB OF GREATER LAKEWAY is double winner at July 4th parade! The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway was a big winner at the 2017 July 4th Parade. The club took home the GRAND PRIZE award for best in the parade. The float committee cochairs, Susan Jerke and Marianna Jacobs, were assisted by many member volunteers, family and friends to create and build the awardwinning float. Onboard were several of our local military residents: USAF Ret. Brigadier General Dick Drury, US Army Major Rebecca Dupuy, USAF Ret. Major General Rod Kelly, and US Army Captain Robert Beasley. Another award went to one of the Special Interest Groups of the Women’s Club, Dottie’s Follies, a performance dance group, which won 3rd Place in the Civic category.

THE SOCIAL GROUP WITH A SILLY NAME HAVING SOME SERIOUS FUN!
L a k e Tr a v i s Si s t e r W i v e s ( LTS W ) i s a growing presence in the community. You may have seen our name around town…in the Lakeway 4th of July parade, on the backs of cars, on Facebook. And you probably wondered what we are about! While the name often does require explanation, it was chosen to reflect our sisterhood and the group’s zany sense of humor. We are a women’s social group which also gives back to the community through philanthropy.
In only our 2nd year of participation, LTSW was recently honored to win 2nd place in the Lakeway 4th of July parade for the 2nd year! Through the hard work of multiple members and their families, our 30’ star-spangled beach-on-wheels included waves, a giant sand castle, even a Tiki bar! The float was escorted by 6 red, white, and blue Jeeps, also decked out in our beach theme, with over 20 of our awesome kiddos riding along. We can’t wait until next year! Just a handful of other recent social events included Pajama Bunco Night, a Derby party, movie nights, and two-steppin’ at the Broken Spoke! While our Fall calendar is not yet locked, we are looking at some super fun activities such as a wine tasting tour, Fall festivals, and more!! While we LOVE to have fun, we also love to give back to the community. LTSW was the bigger supporter of this spring’s Lake Travis Education Foundation’s Butterfly Brunch, filling 3 prime tables! Over the holidays, we organized a huge toy drive, benefitting 6

the families of our Lakeway Police Department. This included a fundraiser at Table 620 with live music by Blazin Kane. Another fall fundraiser featured comfort cooking and benefitted A Smile Never Fades organization. Pe r h a p s m o s t importantly, we are a group of women that supports and celebrates each other. T h e re a re s o m e AMAZING women in this organization, and we have ongoing programs to recognize them. Spotlight Sister is a featured write-up of a member to recognize recent or special community contributions, highlighted on our Facebook page. The giant Friendship Boot will make a surprise appearance in the yard of a member who has done something awesome for LTSW or others. LTSW is proud to be part of the Lake Travis community, and we are blessed to have each other in our lives! If you’re interested in more information, check out our Facebook page @ Lake Travis Sister Wives.

Around Lakeway The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway September Meeting We all remember exactly where we were on 9/11, right? But what if you were in the air on a plane and not allowed to return to the United States? Where would you go, and for how long? What would you think happened if there was no news? Our September speaker will answer these questions and more. Mark your calendars to attend the September 18th meeting of the WCGL. Our speaker, Kimberlee Majkszak , is a native Texan who grew up in the hill country community of Llano. Arriving in Austin to attend college, Kim went on to a career in administration in the medical field. The majority of her career was spent as Practice Administrator in Women’s Health Care. A move to Lakeway seven years ago allowed Kim to develop other interests and skills, including managing the retail store Coldwater Creek for two years. In 2014 Kim retired from the work world and turned her attention to other interest and hobbies which include writing, theater, and needlework. Kim has also served the Lakeway Women’s Club as co-chair of the Out and About group and as Chair of the Lakeway Garden club.
W O EN! N P O
An avid traveler, Kim considers it a privilege to experience the beauty of the world and to discover how other cultures live. She has visited many places throughout the US, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe. Among her favorite trips are cruising the Society Islands of Tahiti and seeing the Greek Isles. It was one of these trips, returning from Paris in 2001, that Kim and her husband were caught up in the aftermath of the attacks in New York City. Sharing her unique experience of the events of September 11, 2001, and her time spent as one of 6,600 “plane people” of Newfoundland, Kim will recount her perspective of what happened, and how the people of Canada came to the aid of their neighbors during one of the worse attacks the United States has endured. The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway meets once a month, September through May at the Lakeway Resort. The meetings are free to Women’s Club members, their guests, and potential new members. Social begins at 9:30 with complimentary coffee, tea and water; then after a brief business meeting at 10:00, the speaker’s presentation. To reserve lunch, please contact Sheila Niles @216409-1110 or saniles4@gmail.com. The price for lunch is $23 for members and $28 for guests.

Around Lakeway Deadline approaching for Lakeway veterans monument engraving Lakeway veterans or their families have until Aug. 15 to apply for the veteran’s name to be added to the Spirit of Freedom Monument in time for Veterans Day this year. The Lakeway Heritage Commission annually solicits the names of veterans eligible to be added to the monument at Lakeway Heritage Park next to the Lakeway Heritage Center for recognition on Veterans Day each year. Originally dedicated on the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, the monument honors and provides a perpetual reflection of local residents who served or presently serve in our armed forces during periods of armed conflict. Eligibility includes those now living or having lived within the Lakeway extra-territorial jurisdiction. The center obelisk lists names of those veterans who served during World War II. Separate panels list the names of veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars. The most recent additions to the monument are the panels nearest to the flags; this allows the addition of names over time, and is not specific to any period of armed conflict. Collectively, there are nearly 1,100 past or present Lakeway residents who have responded to the call of our country during critical times in our history. Sadly, over 120 have passed away since the monument was dedicated in 1995. A tax-deductible donation of $150 is required for each name to be engraved for World War II through Vietnam. Post-Vietnam names require a donation of $175. Regretfully, there is no space remaining for World War II U.S. Navy veterans’ names. Space is very limited for World War II U.S. Army and Army Air Corps veterans as well. For information, call Lakeway Heritage Center at 512-608-9533 or email history@lakeway-tx.gov.
Lake Travis Library News The Lake Travis Community Library will display Moments in Time, the photography of Dr. Mark Houston, during the month of August. Houston, a registered Texas geoscientist, spent his career capturing images of the earth’s interior and traveling extensively. He relocated to Lakeway with his wife Eileen in 2010. Now retired, Houston is devoted to his life-long hobby of photography, a passion that began with the use of a Brownie camera. He is inspired by the art and photography of Eddie Soloway and Art Wolfe and has studied under Austin photographer Brian Loflin. Houston feels that photographs are captured moments in time which represent fleeting memories, emotions, and events. “My photographs are personal in that they reflect experiences, but also represent images of color and form that will stimulate emotional responses in the viewer.” said Houston. “My purpose is to re-awaken naïve vision, to trigger an adult experience in memory.” The community is invited to join Houston for a reception on Sunday, August 6th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. During the reception he will give a brief slide show presentation and explanation of his travel photography. Houston’s exhibit will also include three photographs which he has generously offered to sell in a silent auction to the highest bidder with all proceeds to benefit the Lake Travis Community Library.

Around Lakeway Lake Travis Retired Physicians to Meet in September
INTRODUCING “GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS” We are all very fortunate to call Lakeway home. But, Lakeway is more than just a place to live; it is a vibrant community brimming with family-friendly neighborhoods, chock-full of fascinating, talented people. Our variety is what makes us so both unique and extraordinary. However, sometimes, we get so busy, we lose sight of how interesting and diverse we’ve become. We believe that getting to know the people who live nearby will help us create a sense of belonging and shared identity. We have created a column entitled, “Get to Know Your Neighbors” which we hope will strengthen connections, build trust in our wider community, and contribute to a happier neighborhood for everyone. If you know of a person or a family that you believe is making Lakeway a better place to live, please let us know. We would like to introduce them to your neighbors.

RETIRE BETTER
CHECK THOSE EGGS
We all know not to have all our investment eggs in the same basket. But what if you use a bunch of baskets and end up with the same result as having everything in one? Even if you are perfectly comfortable with the risk of the markets, it is smart money management to not have all of your money in investments that move in the same direction. Stocks, stock funds, ETFs, variable annuities, and even bond funds all tend to move together (they are correlated). This can be hazardous to your financial health. There are many alternative investments available today that are not directly tied to the public stock market. Historically, these investments have been used by large institutions and endowments to offset the volatility of the stock market while still achieving decent growth over time. By taking a page out of the wealthy investors playbook (e.g. the Tiger 21 Group or the Yale and Harvard college endowments) you should include investments that are generally unaffected by the mood swings of the markets
such as nontraded real estate investments, private equity, venture capital, commodities, hedge funds, oil and gas, secured floating income, and principal protected fixed and indexed annuities. Through a proper allocation across non-market correlated asset classes, it is possible to balance out your current investment portfolio without giving up the potential for long term growth. While we all want the market to continue reaching new peaks, we still have to plan appropriately for the periods of time the markets choose to go through the valley. If you would like further information on this topic or to receive a copy of our report on retirement investment planning, please send your requests to the email below.
