OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE GRAND LAKE ESTATES POA

News and Notes from the Board August 2017

Notices for proxies, absentee ballot and candidate bios were approved by the Election Oversight Committee and will be mailed out on August 25, 2017. Gate code reassignments will be effective October 15, 2017. A motion was carried unanimously to rescind the 2015 ATV resolution and to abide by the CC&R’s Section 2.05 on the use of easement by owners. A contract was approved to replace/install gabion baskets at the Guinevere Spillway. This contract includes additional work to stabilize the spillway. Photos and an itemized list of projects cost for the park improvements, trails and future clubhouse were circulated to those in attendance. A motion was unanimously approved to move forward on these projects. Project manager(s) will be assigned for each project and the project managers will give regular reports back to the Board. Money that has come in from collections will be used to pay off the outstanding loan for the lots at the front of the subdivision. These lots currently are up for sale. This saves the additional expense of finance charges on the loan. This plan was approved. Additional mulch and pressure washing on the stamped concrete for the entrance were approved. A bid for pressure washing the fence area and path around the playground at the park was also approved. Copyright © 2017 Peel, Inc.

History of Halloween Halloween is a popular holiday that takes place on October 31. In the United States and Canada, children dress in costumes and go trick-or-treating. Many people carve jacko’lanterns out of pumpkins. Halloween parties for children feature fortunetelling, mock haunted houses, scary stories, and games, such as bobbing for apples. People decorate their houses and yards with images of ghosts, skeletons, witches, black cats, bats, and other symbols of Halloween. Many communities across the United States also hold parades and other celebrations for Halloween. Halloween developed from an ancient pagan festival celebrated by Celtic people over 2,000 years ago in the area that is now the United Kingdom, Ireland, and northwestern France. The festival was called Samhain (pronounced SOW ehn), which means “summer’s end.” The festival marked the beginning of the dark winter season and was celebrated around November 1. In the 800’s, the Christian church established a new holiday, All Saints’ Day, on this date. All Saints’ Day was also called All Hallows’. Hallow means saint, or one who is holy. The evening before All Hallows’ was known as All Hallows’ Eve, or as it came to be abbreviated, All Hallow e’en. This name was eventually shortened to Halloween.

Floodwater Mosquitoes

If you’ve been outside lately, you have most likely noticed the giant mosquitoes that seem to want to pick people up and carry them off. With recent weather conditions, floodwater mosquitoes have emerged in large numbers. Floodwater mosquitoes lay their eggs above the water line in ponds, ditches, pastures, or other places where water collects. The eggs can remain in dry areas and when these areas are flooded the eggs hatch, leading to swarms of hungry mosquitoes. These mosquitoes are larger than mosquitoes we are used to and can swarm in high numbers. While floodwater mosquitoes won’t last forever, other mosquitoes called container breeding mosquitoes emerge when floodwaters begin to recede. Many of these species are ones that we are used to seeing around our homes. Many things can help to reduce mosquito problems around the home. Eliminate all sources of standing water. Containers such as watering cans, buckets and bottles can turn into mosquito breeding grounds. Water should be drained from birdbaths, gutters, flowerpots and pet dishes at least once a week. Children’s wading pools should be emptied of water at least once a week and stored so they cannot collect water when not in use. Tree holes should be filled in with sand or mortar, or drained after each rain. Leaky faucets and pipes

located outside should be repaired. Areas that cannot be drained, such as ponds or large rain collection systems, can be stocked with mosquito fish that eat mosquito larvae. Dunks can also be used in these areas. Dunks are a small, donutshaped product that contains Bacillus thuringiensis var. israeliensis. The donut disrupts the life cycle of the mosquito and is non-toxic to humans, amphibians and fish. When outside, wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing with long sleeves & long pants. Repellants containing active ingredients such as DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus can be effective to keep mosquitoes from biting when activities cannot be rescheduled.

Rehabilitating wildlife can take you from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. Take, for instance, the family of opossums in Houston that was purposely set on fire. The mom and all but two of the babies perished. Houston Police Officers were able to save two little ones who were found in Mom’s pouch. Burned, stressed and in obvious pain they were taken to and treated by the Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists for initial treatment. From there they were brought to TWRC Wildlife Center for further care and rehabilitation. Sadly, the injuries sustained by one of the babies were so severe we were unable to save him. Can you imagine the pain these little opossums experienced? You know what it’s like when you burn your finger or get a sunburn. Imagine these little animals, weighing about the same as an egg yolk, experiencing this excruciating pain. In addition to the pain, wild animals experience extreme stress, dehydration, infection along with the loss of mom and littermates. The main priority of our staff and volunteers is to provide painfree solutions to every animal we admit to our Center. The baby opossum that didn’t make it was treated with compassion, dignity and respect and we made his passing as easy as possible for him. At least he received the respect he deserved in passing that wasn’t to be his during his short life. The one that survived is now receiving home-based care by a State permitted rehabilitator and is expected to recover and be released back to the wild for a second chance at life. So just in this one situation, we experienced the lowest of lows and the highest of highs. Knowing these animals suffered needlessly at the hands of some cruel people is incomprehensible. However, we saved one even though the odds were against the little baby surviving. The absolute peak of our happiness and pride will come when we see the opossum walk off into the woods, healthy and free. We can’t continue to save wildlife babies without your help.
