The Lakeway Players
The Lakeway Players are proud to present the musical comedy “INTO THE WOODS”; Music and Lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM, Book by JAMES LAPINE. “INTO THE WOODS” is a musical that intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Rapunzel", and "Cinderella", as well as several others. The musical is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family (the original beginning of The Grimm Brothers' Rapunzel), their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them, and their interaction with other storybook characters during their journey. The musical debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986 and premiered on Broadway on November 5, 1987, where it won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason). The show runs 3 nights; Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 2nd, 3rd and 4th, at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek, Lakeway. Call 512-261-1010 for tickets which are $25 each. Seating will be at tables of 10, and is BYOB as well as your own food if you like. Setups and light snacks will be provided. The show starts at 7:30 with doors opening at 6:30.

Nature photographer connects to earth’s beauty at Lakeway exhibit
Local photographer Pa m Ga r re t t i s drawing viewers into her seascapes and connecting them with wildlife in her free exhibit now through Oct. 24 at the Lakeway City Hall Art Gallery. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays at 1102 Lohmans Crossing in Lakeway. Garrett grew up along the coast of Southern California where she developed a deep love for the ocean. “Photographing the ocean is a way to capture the dramatic, everchanging faces of the sea,” Garrett said. “I want others, through my photography, to enjoy and appreciate the seascapes as much as I do.” Austin has been her home for many years. “I am still amazed by its beauty, diversity, and constantly changing scenery, which lends itself to numerous photographic possibilities,” she said. Garrett’s recent travels have given her a chance to photograph a variety of animals. “When looking through the lens of my camera, I see so much more than I ever realized before,” she said. “A new connection with animals and a real love of wildlife has emerged for me. What I see now in animals, I want others to see as well.” She also uses her camera to realize the essence of moments, such as a child giggling and running through a wave on the beach, a startled subject seeing the incredible sunset bursting across the sky or a wild animal locking its eyes with yours. “From seascapes to architecture, from scenery to wildlife, I hope to inspire others to see the beauty on this earth,” Garrett said.

Brass band to blare at Lakeway concert Oct. 22 The Austin Brass Band will perform a free concert at 4 p.m. Oct. 22 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. A traditional Britishstyle brass band, the group differs from American-style brass ensembles by using cornets, flugelhorns and tenor horns instead of trumpets and French horns. British brass bands also use baritones as well as euphoniums, along with trombones, both Eb and BBb tubas and percussion. This unique instrumentation provides a distinctive sound that is rich, round and mellow. The Austin Brass Band’s one-hour concert is being produced by the City of Lakeway’s Arts Committee. For information, call Lakeway Activity Center at 512-261-1010.

Lake Travis Library
The Lake Travis Community Library will display the artwork of local mother and son Jane and Eric Wilson during the month of October. Jane, a member of the Lakeway Painters and the Waterloo Watercolor group, enjoys painting landscapes of local interest such as the food trailers on South Congress, the state capitol building, and picturesque Lake Travis. In addition to landscapes, Jane delights in painting flowers, foliage, birds, and the occasional portrait for close family and friends. Jane is primarily a watercolor painter. However, she likes to attend workshops that challenge her to try new techniques and mediums, as well as expand and refine her work. "I will try any new idea and am always looking for a fun subject to work on," said Jane. “I love to try new techniques and colors.” Jane’s son Eric is a multi-media painter who likes to takes his work outside to induce high-intensity bursts of creativity. He scouts a location and paints as much as he can in an hour. For Eric, this rapid approach brings unique challenges, but also unique inspirations. “Being out in the environment allows me to see a variety of details you don’t see in a photograph,” said Eric. “If I try to paint from a photo I’ll play around with one little part I like and eventually put it away unfinished, but if I know I’m only in this spot for a limited time, my hands start moving and eventually I have something.” Eric also likes to challenge himself by working in different mediums. “I think my technical background of being an animator makes me really versatile – at work I am always trying new styles and software,” said Eric. “I’m really comfortable in the this-is-newI-have-no-clue-what-I’m-doing space.” All are invited to attend Jane and Eric Wilson’s reception at the Lake Travis Community Library on Sunday, October 22 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

RETIRE BETTER
WHEN HALF IS MORE
Did you know the stock market has always gone up over time? Even with crazy dot.com busts and great recessions, you can still make money over the long term by investing publicly traded stock. As a matter of fact, for the years 2000-2016, a $1 Million investment in the S&P500 would have grown to over $2.1M. This assumes you can invest directly in the S&P500 index without any fees. During this time period there were only 4 negative years. Not bad, that means you made money 75% of the time. But what would have happened if you could skip those 4 bad years? Your investment would have grown to over $5.3M....that’s over 150% more. Most people would agree that is a pretty substantial difference. So how do you skip the bad years? Unfortunately, this would be like having your cake and eating it too. Even though it is nearly impossible to participate in
100% of the gains of the market with zero risk during the bad years, it is possible to structure an investment plan to participate in 45-50% of the gains while protecting against loss. Assuming that you only made half of the gains of the S&P500 for the time frame above, and were able to sit out the 4 bad years, your $1M investment would have grown to over $2.4M. By missing out on the losses, you would have over $300k more. I can’t stress enough how important it is to avoid losses. When you don’t lose, you don’t have to take as much risk to make up for the bad years. By properly structuring your long term investment plan, the above scenario is not only an example but is actually possible. To find out more give me a call or shoot me an email and we can discuss further.

Born Too Soon
It took a lot of expert doctors at Seton N.W. in Austin, a lot of technology and more than one million dollars to keep baby Jack alive. He was the smallest baby boy ever born there at the time. A micro preemie weighing a mere 1 pound 9 ounces and only twelve inches long. Babies like Jack usually only had a 20 percent chance of survival. I remember how transparent his skin was, all the drugs given to him so his tiny brain would remember to breathe, the constant beeping of the life support monitors. IV lines in his hands then feet then head. Calls from the ICU nurse at 3 am for approval to give him a blood transfusion or spinal tap. The umbilical catheter in his tiny belly for blood samples.
Sitting by his side for 8-10 hours a day for 130 days in NICU praying. Waiting for Christmas Eve 54 days after being born to get the chance to finally hold him for the first time. His diaper was the size of a small tea bag. A tube down his throat used for giving him a ½ teaspoon of breast milk at a time. He had over 30 x-rays and blood drawn forty times in the first two months. Jack’s original due date was February 17, 2000. He was discharged from NICU on March 7, 2000 - the best day of our life! We will be celebrating my Gift from God, my Pride and Joy, my Fighter’s 18th birthday on October 30, 2017 with much emotion, love, happy tears and sadness. His dad passed away a few months ago but he will be watching from heaven very proudly as God reminds all of us what a blessing Jack is to so many. His strength, wisdom and strong will to live will bring him success and the ability to conquer any obstacle life has he pursues his passions in Technical Theater, Aerial Photography and Computer Science. The book “Born Too Soon” was written but not published yet by his mom as a tribute to Jack and encouragement to other families who might have given birth to a preemie. It is the positive take on miracles, believing in the power of prayer and the strength of love in families.

Around Lakeway OPINION COLUMN Submitted by Rita Cross, President of the CAFA As the President of Citizen Advocates for Animals (CAFA), the Board and I feel obligated to provide the truth to the citizens of Lakeway. For some 16 years, the City has paid a trapper annually to "Bait, Trap and Kill" the deer. City leaders don't see a need for a scientific population estimate to be performed by a wildlife biologist. So, why not a census? Because it might indicate that there is not a serious overpopulation of deer in Lakeway. That would spoil the City's plan to kill as many deer as possible. In the early 2000's, there was an overpopulation of deer and many were unhealthy. The deer were trapped and sent to Mexico and later to ranches. This did not work and was stopped. Many of the deer suffered from Capture Myopathy which can kill them. Thus, the beginning of the program occurring today. The deer are presently healthy and often are seen in groups of 8-10. This is likely due to their behavior to forage together with their herds. It also occurs in areas where they might be fed. This is due to the fact that people want the deer to avoid the corn feeders and to stay alive. Many people in Lakeway have stated that they aren't seeing as many deer as in the past. Recently, Lakeway leaders made significant changes. The salary for the deer trapper is now $40,950, a healthy increase from last year. The number of traps has increased from 5 to 8. The corn feeders at the trap locations have been up for a few weeks. These changes send a loud and clear message of what the City wants to accomplish. Austin, The Hills, Westlake and other communities are against trapping and have found they can live in harmony with wildlife. Lakeway continues the cruelty with full knowledge of the humane options available. Killing begets more killing. When some of the female deer are sterilized, it is a win-win situation. The does remain with their herds, fewer fawns are born, there is less ingress from outside deer, and there are fewer deer/vehicle accidents due to the does not going through estrus. The bucks will not be wildly chasing sterilized deer. If people find the current methods cruel, they have a perfect right to speak up at the City Council meetings. Sign in and speak for up to 3 minutes. Also, if residents live near any of the 8 traps and are sickened by the thrashing and crying of the deer, they can call and write Mr. Steve Jones, City Manager, and demand that the trap nearby be taken down immediately. No Lakeway citizens should ever have to accept and endure the vile cruelty that Lakeway metes out to the deer 3 months per year.
For more information, comments, and/or concerns, please contact Rita Cross with the Citizen Advocates for Animals at rexellen08@yahoo.com or 512-755-1578. 10
