FEATURED FAMILY On the cover – The Barcellanos

Q: How long have you lived in Lakeway/Lake Travis area? A: Jacin and I both grew up in Lakeway. We both went to Lake Travis high school. Q: What do you like most about Lakeway? A: I would say the thing I like most about living in Lakeway is the feeling of community. I grew up out here. For me, it has all the charm of a small town. I run into lifelong friends at the grocery store or out to eat. Our kids play on the same playscapes and go to the same parks that we did. When they go to school I am leaving them in the hands of people, some of which I’ve known for 20 years. My roots run deep here, and that’s something I could never have anywhere else. Q: How/where did you meet? A: Jacin and I met through mutual friends who live in the area. Q: What are some of your hobbies? A: We love to be at the lake. During the summer, we usually go swim a few times a week. When it’s cold we fish and kayak. Q: Where do you work/what do you do for a living? A: I am a medic with the Army Guard. I work at Camp Mabry in Austin. Jacin works for high-tech floors as a field supervisor. Q: What is your favorite thing to do as a family? A: Outside of time at the lake Q: What is one of your favorite family memories? Jacin said that his favorite memory was when we all went down to the beach. We stayed in Rockport and had a blast. Q: Do you have any pets/what kind? A: We have a lab mix named Pearl. She loves the lake as much as we do. When we go to the park in the summer, the kids swimming there love to watch her jump head long off the cliffs into the water or dive for rocks in the shallows. We also have a cat named Church. She is not so fond of water. Q: What is something you would like to share with your neighbors and community members? A: Turn your brights off when you pass runners on the street ;) Q: What is something you would like to do or are looking forward to doing in the next year? We talked about it and I think we are going to try and take another family vacation to the coast. Personally, I would really like to run a marathon this year. I have been training and as long as there is no more setbacks (injuries) I expect it will happen! Q: What is your favorite piece of advice or quote? “Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.” -Warren W. Wiersbe Q: If you could travel anywhere with your family, where would it be and why? If we could all go anywhere it would be somewhere tropical. Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.

CAFA Update This is an update to our last article in the December issue of “Lakeway Voice”. Citizen Advocates for Animals (CAFA) has hired a wildlife biologist and his team to spend several nights driving the streets of Lakeway to get as accurate a count of the deer as possible. As of now, the numbers are much lower than expected. The City has, for a good while, used the number 500 for the carrying capacity of deer in Lakeway. Once the final results are in, we will share them with you. In December, an official letter was read and given to each City Council member and Mayor Bain, Steve Jones, City Manager and Charles Edwards, Lakeway Deer Committee chairman. CAFA is requesting that the City take a year off from deer trapping while a deer information committee does expansive research into other methods being used for humane deer management. This would involve a team of volunteers to look into other U.S. communities across this country and their deer population control measures. CAFA volunteers will continue to help Lakeway become a city known for its compassion and respect for wildlife. With progressive options available, the City could very well be known as the first Texas city to end cruelty to the deer.

He and the quartet captivate audiences with their honky tonk style. February 1 Lake Travis Fiddlers The Lake Travis Fiddlers, founded in 2000 by Lake Travis ISD Orchestra Director Anna Macias, are continuing to gain national recognition. They perform in a wide variety of Texas venues and were a great hit in Lakeway last year. These fiddlers and singers present a rousing show of country and folk music. If there was a “state championship” for high school musical groups, they would run away with it. February 8 The Second Line Jazz Band Get ready for Mardi Gras as The Second Line Jazz Band returns to Lakeway. They have performed in concerts sponsored by the Austin Traditional Jazz Society and at various festivals. Band leader Jim Ivy says, “The band’s name comes from the quintessential New Orleans art form, said to be like having a jazz funeral without a body.” February 15 Robert “Beto” Skiles Quartet The Robert Skiles Quartet will present a musical valentine. Vocalist Shawnda Birch will be featured as they present popular songs with a taste of blues. Skiles is renowned as an orchestra leader, composer and college teacher. February 22 Red Young Quartet Pianist Red Young has had a spectacular musical career, including recordings with Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Linda Rondstadt, Eric Burdon and Nelson Riddle as well as concert tours around the world. The Red Young Quartet will feature Young’s wife, vocalist Silvie Rider, in this concert. For information, call the Activity Center at 512-261-1010.

Bookings brisk for 2018 Lakeway Citizens Police Academy Lakeway police are reporting high enrollment for their popular Citizens Police Academy. The 2018 program will be a 30-hour block of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of law enforcement and the department’s policies and operational practices. Classes will begin Feb. 21, and graduation will be May 9. The academy will meet Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. for 12 weeks at the Lakeway City Hall auditorium, 1102 Lohmans Crossing, to cover a different area of police work each week. Police officers, their supervisors and civilian personnel with particular expertise in a specific organizational function will conduct each instructional block. The primary objective of the Lakeway Citizens Police Academy is to build a better understanding between citizens and the police department through education. The program was created to help citizens make informed decisions about police services, police activity and why the police can or cannot take action. Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford said that he hopes that the academy will increase public awareness, dispel suspicions and misconceptions about police actions. The police department benefits by becoming more aware of the community from the participants’ interaction and input, which makes the academy a two-way learning experience. “The Citizens Police Academy is an integral component of Lakeway Police Department’s community policing programs,” Radford said. “The growth in enrollment each year and the positive interaction between our officers and students reinforce the city’s and the department’s commitment to the academy each year.” Participants must submit an application and consent to a background check. All applicants must be at least 21 years old and either reside or work within the city of Lakeway. Applicants who are on probation, or who have been convicted of felonies or crimes involving moral turpitude are ineligible. Class size is limited to 50 people, all of whom must have passed the applicant background check. The academy is free of charge. Students must attend at least 80 percent of the classes in order to graduate. Graduates are eligible to apply for membership to the Lakeway Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. “Many academy graduates continue to serve the community in the Alumni Association and Lakeway Police Foundation,” Radford said. “We are grateful for their assistance, especially at events such as Lakeway’s Fourth of July parade.” Applications are available at Lakeway Police Department, 104 Cross Creek, or on the city’s website at www.lakeway-tx.gov/police. Complete and return applications to the Lakeway Police Department by Feb. 2 to be considered for the 2018 academy.
