District to Add Five Minutes to the End of the School Day Beginning Fall 2018

A Resort for Wild Animals where People can Enjoy Their Company! 137 woods acres with several lakes and creeks await you for the enjoyment of animals from around the world to breed and raise their young in a natural habitat.
Dear Lake Travis ISD Parents and Guardians, Beginning next fall, the school day will be extended by five (5) minutes at all Lake Travis ISD campuses. The additional minutes at the end of the day are needed to build capacity in the event of a school delay or closure due to bad weather. Current school start times will not be affected. House Bill 2610, passed by the 84th Texas Legislature in the spring of 2015, requires that public school students receive 75,600 minutes of instruction annually. Before the new law was enacted, school districts were required to provide students with 180 days of instruction annually. The change from ‘days’ to ‘minutes’ of instruction allows school districts to bank sufficient minutes of instruction above the required minimum and avoid using bad weather make-up days. However, should the district encounter an emergency or other unforeseen circumstance, students may be required to make up any lost instructional time in order to comply with state law. In January, the Lake Travis school board adopted the 20182019 instructional calendar with the first day of instruction set for Wednesday, August 15, 2018 and the last day of instruction set for Friday, May 24, 2019. Listed below are current instructional day start and end times, as well as start and end times for the 2018-2019 school year:

School board expands LeaderForLife student wellness program
Drug testing to be urine-based; include school-sponsored competitive extracurricular programs, parking permit holders, and 7th-8th grade students
• Mandatory enrollment for students in grades 9-12 participating in school-sponsored competitive extracurricular activities • Mandatory enrollment for high school students who obtain a parking pass
In an effort to strengthen the district’s substance abuse prevention efforts, the Lake Travis school board voted unanimously to expand the LeaderForLife student wellness program during its regular meeting Wednesday, May 16. Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, enrollment in the LeaderForLife program—which includes random student drug testing—will be determined as follows: • Voluntary enrollment for students in grades 7-12 who are not involved in school-sponsored competitive extracurricular activities (with parental permission) • Mandatory enrollment for students in grades 7-8 participating in school-sponsored competitive extracurricular activities
Additionally, the board approved transitioning from the current method of saliva- to urine-based testing. There will be a minimum of four rounds of testing annually, and each round will include no less than 5% of students enrolled in the program. Changes to the program were recommended in part by the LeaderForLife advisory committee in conjunction with the district’ School Health Advisory Council. “Our intent is to provide students with an opportunity to hold themselves accountable to a higher standard, to empower them to lead a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle,” said Dr. Brad Lancaster, Lake Travis ISD Superintendent of Schools. “It is less about punishing students who test positive for drugs or alcohol and is more about offering resources and support to students and their families.” District and school officials are currently designing wrap(Continued on Page 14)

around support services, including counseling, for students who test positive for drug use. After a 2013 survey determined that approximately 35% of 10th- and 12th-grade students at Lake Travis High School reported using marijuana, LeaderForLife was launched in February 2016. The program is comprised of four major components: academics, leadership, service, and accountability, the latter of which included voluntary random drug testing of students in grades 9-12. In its first year, 640 students were enrolled in the program of which 95 were randomly drug tested. Presently, 1,153 students are enrolled in the program. San Angelo, TX-based Melody’s Southwest Consortium manages the testing in conjunction with district and school officials. Expansion of the wellness program as approved by the school board—which includes drug testing and student counseling support—is projected to cost up to $120,000, depending on the number of students tested and the frequency of testing. LAKEWAY, Texas (May 3, 2018) – Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Lakeway announced that it has recently been recognized by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program for its commitment to best practices and education on infant safe sleep. It is one of the first hospitals in Texas to earn the Bronze Safe Sleep Hospital certification. The National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program was created by Cribs for Kids®, a Pittsburgh-based organization dedicated to preventing infant, sleep-related deaths because of accidental suffocation. In addition to being Cribs for Kids® partners, Baylor Scott & White– Lakeway was recognized for following the safe sleep guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and providing training programs for parents, staff and the community. “It is a privilege to receive this recognition from the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program based on our hospital’s efforts to demonstrate best practices and education relating to infant safe sleep,”
said Halie Knuff, BSN, RN, CPST, neonatal intensive care unit RN at Baylor Scott & White– Lakeway. “Our entire team is committed to reducing sleep-related deaths among infants, and it is our hope that Baylor Scott & White– Lakeway can serve as a leader in this worthy mission here in Central Texas and across the state.” The National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program was created in partnership with leading infant health and safety organizations such as All Baby & Child, The National Center for the Review & Prevention of Child Deaths, Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Programs, Kids in Danger, Children’s Safety Network, American SIDS Institute, Charlie’s Kids, CJ Foundation for SIDS, and numerous state American Academy of Pediatric chapters and health departments. “Sleep-Related Death (SRD) results in the loss of more than 3,500 infants every year in the U.S.,” said Michael H. Goodstein, MD, neonatologist and medical director of research at Cribs for Kids®. “We know that consistent education can have a profound effect on infant mortality, and this program is designed to encourage safe sleep education and to recognize those hospitals that are taking an active role in reducing these preventable deaths.” For more information on Baylor Scott & White’s offerings in the Austin-/-Round Rock region, visit: ATX.BSWHealth.com

Wildland Fire Precautions With warmer temperatures and drying vegetation, residents need to be reminded of the need for wildfire/brush fire safety awareness and preparedness. Do not park vehicles on the dry grass. The heat from the vehicle’s exhaust system can cause the grass to catch fire. Remove combustible materials from around your home. Keep grass mowed short. Pack critical medicines, important documents, and family heirlooms to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Agree on an evacuation plan that includes what to do if you get separated and where you’ll go in case of evacuation. TEN SIMPLE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WILDLAND FIRE
Wildfire can strike home if you have not taken some steps to protect your house and property. The actions and precautions listed below are designed to help you prepare your home and lessen the threat of wildland fire damage to you and your property. 1. LPG/propane tanks should be far enough away from buildings for valves to be shut off in case of fire. Keep area around the tank clear of flammable vegetation. 2. Store gasoline in an approved safety can away from occupied buildings.
Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.
3. All combustibles such as firewood, wooden picnic tables, boats and stacked lumber should be kept away from structures. 4. Clear roof surfaces and gutters regularly to avoid build-up of flammable materials such as leaves and other debris. 5. Remove branches from trees to a height of 15 feet or more. 6. In rural areas, clear a fuel break of at least three times the fuel length around all structures. 7. Have fire tools handy such as: ladder long enough to reach your roof, shovel, rake and a bucket or two for water. 8. Place connected garden hoses at all sides of your home for emergency use. 9. Assure that you and your family know all emergency exits from your home. 10. Assure that you and your family know all emergency exits from your neighborhood. Each family should be proactive to prepare for emergencies: Prepare a Basic Emergency Supply Kit; Make a Plan for Safety and Communicating with Family; Be Informed; and Get Involved in Preparing the Community.
