Around Lakeway Lakeway MUD Irrigation Reminder We don’t need to remind anyone that it is Summer in Lakeway; all you have to do is walk outside to get a quick reminder of our 100 degree (Plus or Minus a degree or two) weather. As of this writing, the 7 day forecast shows no rain in sight. We are in Stage Two restrictions for irrigation between May 1 and September 30. This means that irrigation is allowed two days per week depending on the last digit of your address. Odd number addresses may irrigate on Wednesday and Saturday, and Even number addresses may irrigate on Thursday and Sunday. Commercial irrigation is allowed on Tuesday and Friday. These restrictions apply to both underground sprinkler systems and sprinklers on the end of a hose. It is very important to remember that NO IRRIGATION IS ALLOWED BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 10AM AND 7pm. During those hours, the heat causes so much evaporation that irrigation is very ineffective. If you are putting in new sod and/or landscaping, you may apply for a variance for a short period of time while your new vegetation takes root. Many people don’t know how much water they put on their lawn through the irrigation system. Here is an example that may help you understand your irrigation system a little better and perhaps keep from using too much water. A sample irrigation system has 10 zones. Each zone has 10 sprinkler heads that put out 1 gallon a minute. Each zone is set to irrigate for 20 minutes so that’s a total of 200 minutes. Each zone will put out 200 gallons of water in 20 minutes. The total amount of water for one night would be 2000 gallons. If you are an odd number address you can irrigate on Wednesday and Saturday, so you set the controller to do the same on Wednesday and Saturday, so now you have used 4,000 gallons on your lawn in one week. There are 8 weeks to our billing cycle, so 8 times 4,000 is 32,000 gallons of water used on your yard, a lot more than you probably thought you were using. Our advice is be careful when setting your controller and time on zones. “Homeowners with automatic sprinkler systems could use up to 30 to 40 percent more water than is necessary for a healthy landscaper” per an LCRA article on “Why efficient irrigation can save you money”. The rule of thumb is each zone should put out a total of 1-inch per week.
Free Rat-Pack Experience at Lakeway's Big Band Bash This is the best entertainment deal in the Lake Travis area (and open to all ages). Held every second Monday of the month from 8-10 PM at the Lakeway Activity Center, the seventeen-piece Republic of Texas Big Band cranks out the classic arrangements of your favorite Sinatra-era big band classics FOR FREE from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Lakeway Activity Center (105 Cross Creek) There is no admission fee and the band is unpaid, but donations to the band are appreciated. The next Big Band Bash is on Monday, August 13, 2018. Doors open at 7:30 and table seating is first come, first served. You can bring your own food and drink (BYOB) to make it a very affordable date night or make it a family outing with the kids and grandparents. Dress elegantly or casually. All are welcome. So, don’t sit at home watching people dance on TV, watch them dance in real life (or maybe even dance yourself ) at the monthly Lakeway Big Band Bash. For more information call the Lakeway Activity Center 105 Cross Creek Lakeway, Tx 78734 512-261-1010
We hope this information will motivate some to check their sprinkler systems schedule and adjust as needed to conserve wherever possible. By the time this goes to press, we will be in August. Let’s all hope we have had some rain by this time, and we hope all of you have or have had a pleasant and enjoyable vacation break. Please feel free to call us with any questions at 512/261-6222, email us at CustomerService@LakewayMUD.org. You can also visit our website at www.LakewayMUD.org for further information. 4

Lakeway Veterans Monument Taking Names for Engraving of local residents who served or presently serve in our armed forces during periods of armed conflict. Eligibility includes those now living or having lived within the Lakeway extra-territorial jurisdiction. The center obelisk lists names of those veterans who served during World War II. Separate panels list the names of veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars. The most recent additions to the monument are the panels nearest to the flags; this allows the addition of names over time, and is not specific to any period of armed conflict. Lakeway veterans or their families have until Aug. 15 to apply for the veteran’s name to be added to the Spirit of Freedom Monument in time for Veterans Day this year. The Lakeway Heritage Commission annually solicits the names of veterans eligible to be added to the monument at Lakeway Heritage Park next to the Lakeway Heritage Center for recognition on Veterans Day each year.
Nearly 1,100 past or present Lakeway residents have responded to the call of our country during critical times in our history. More than 120 of these Lakeway veterans have passed away since the monument was dedicated in 1995.
The engravings will be completed in October with the ceremony tentatively scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9.
A tax-deductible donation of $160 is required for each name to be engraved for World War II through Vietnam. Post-Vietnam names require a donation of $175. Regretfully, there is no space remaining for World War II U.S. Navy veterans’ names. Space is very limited for World War II U.S. Army and Army Air Corps veterans as well.
Originally dedicated on the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, the monument honors and provides a perpetual reflection
For information, call Lakeway Heritage Center at 512-608-9533 or email history@lakeway-tx.gov.

Around Lakeway Lake Travis Community Library August Art Display The Lake Travis Community Library will display the artwork of Lisa Daidone during the month of August. Daidone received her Fine Arts degree from the DuCret School of the Arts in New Jersey. She moved to Texas over twenty years ago and has lived in Houston, Lakeway, and now Spicewood. Daidone is a member of Lakeway Painters and the Creative Arts Society of Austin. Daidone prefers to work in a variety of mediums which allows her to be more creative and expressive. Over the years she has created many original works of art for private collections and has exhibited in many galleries and art shows. In 2008 Daidone created a personalized work of art to honor Dr. Rick Barrett, the recipient of that year’s Humanitarian Award from the Child Care Council of Greater Houston. Currently she is represented at The Galleries at Pecan Creek in Marble Falls. “Observing people enjoying my work gives me the greatest pleasure,” said Daidone. “I love to make people smile.” The community is invited to join Lisa Daidone for a reception on Sunday, August 12th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

New Oral History Videos Connect Lakeway’s Past to Present The Lakeway Heritage Commission recently released five oral history videos that showcase Lakeway’s founding as a resort community and the origins of some of its most treasured amenities. Featured in the five videos is one of Lakeway’s founding fathers, Frank Denius. A World War II veteran and Austin attorney, Denius was instrumental in achieving the vision few dreamed possible of Lakeway as a new community on the south shore of Lake Travis. Joining him in the other videos are 98-year-old golfer June Lockhart, avid tennis player Cynthia Weichsel, and Ret. U.S. Army Col. Charles Edwards, a former mayor of Lakeway and Vietnam veteran. All five videos are available on the city’s website at www.lakewaytx.gov/oralhistory. The Heritage Commission conceived the idea for the project at a 2015 workshop where they were charged with finding creative ways to tell the history of Lakeway. “These videos do a wonderful job of capturing the city’s living history by focusing on Lakeway’s growth from a small community into what it is today,” said Andra Bennett, Lakeway Parks and Recreation Department director. The Heritage Commission worked on these five videos with Lakeway resident Lew Adams, a Lakeway resident with more than 40 years of experience in the major motion picture and television industry, to bring the city’s history to life. An Award winning producer, director and cinematographer, Adams has won numerous show awards including The Gold Cindy, The Cine Golden Eagle, Aurora and four Emmy Award nominations. A member of the Directors Guild of America since 1977, productions he has directed, photographed or produced have received more than 25 Emmy awards and nominations. He has worked with such stars as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Carol Burnett and on productions at Universal Studios, Fox, Paramount, Columbia, CBS, Disney, PBS and MTV. A generous donation from the Lakeway Civic Corporation made the production possible. “It is my hope that these videos will be the first of many more to come,” Bennett said. “Lakeway’s rich history is full of fascinating accounts that are in danger of being lost to time if they are not preserved.” Courtesy of City of Lakeway Archives Lakeway Voice - August 2018

Lake Travis Rotary Crowns Chicken Kind and Queen Rotary International and four other Rotary Clubs in the area to fund a clean water well. In addition, they have embarked on an ambitious research project with Baylor College of Medicine to develop and print 3 D Printed limbs for children who are amputees. In 2016 they watched as orthopedist specialists from Baylor in Houston printed, fitted and provided artificial limb sockets to allow children in Tanzania to walk at a greatly reduced cost and with just a few hours of time. Residents of the area who are interested in both local and international projects that help to make the world a better place are encouraged to attend a Rotary meeting and see what all excitement is about. Those who would like a “close up” look at the international project in Lanjani, Tanzania and would like to travel with the Rotarians can contact Donna Gunn, 512-350-5880, coordinator of the chicken project or Barker Keith, 512-799-3857, coordinator of the Rotary 3 D Limb project to arrange travel to Tanzania in October of 2018 or spring of 2019. Pictured from left to right is Erin Thrash, Donna Gun and Clayton Amacker. Over the last three years The Lakeway/Lake Travis Rotary Club has provided a clean water well, is helping to support a classroom in the new school being built, and has provided funds for the care of handicapped children.
Amid good natured competition and a lot of hilarity, the Lakeway/ Lake Travis Rotary Club raised a chicken paddle designed by well-known local artist Linda Wells, to compete for the chance to become the Chicken King or Queen. The intent of the chicken auction was to raise money to purchase a flock of laying hens for a sustainable food security project in Tanzania, East Africa. Each chicken was worth $5.00 and within ten minutes, the members of the club were opening their hearts and their pocketbooks. There was a spirited response as Scott Swenson, well-known local auctioneer, encouraged Rotarians to “get those paddles up”. Ladies were first and were challenged to outbid the men as the bidding took place. Erin Thrash, head of Thrash Law Firm, was crowned Queen of Chickens while Clanton Amacker was crowned King! Having fun while doing good is what Rotary is all about. And the Rotarians in the Lakeway/Lake Travis Rotary Club have a special place in their hearts for the children of the Maasai in Tanzania. Over the last three years they have collaborated with Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.

SYNOPSIS: The ‘Man in Chair’, a mousy, agoraphobic Broadway fanatic, seeking to cure his "non-specific sadness", listens to a recording of the fictional 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens to this rare recording, the characters appear in his apartment, and it is transformed into an impressive Broadway set with, sparkling furniture, painted backdrops, and glitzy costumes. ‘Man in Chair’ provides a running commentary throughout the show from the stage, though he is on the audience side of the fourth wall, invisible to the players. The plot incorporates mistaken identities, dream sequences, spit takes, an unflappable English butler, an absent-minded dowager, a Broadway impresario and his Follies production, comic gangsters, a ditzy chorus girl, a harried best man, and a "Drowsy" (i.e. "tipsy") Chaperone, played by a blowzy Grande Dame of the Stage, specializing in "rousing anthems" and not above upstaging the occasional co-star. Rehearsals will begin in September and continue thru tech and dress, the end of October.
