SPICEWOOD ARTS SOCIETY AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS The Spicewood Arts Society (SAS) has awarded six $1500 scholarships to 2018 graduating seniors at Lake Travis and Marble Falls High Schools planning to major in the arts. Now in its twelvthyear, the program selects students for their academic achievement, leadership, and dedication to their art. Funds are provided through donations from “Rockin’ the Vineyard,” the SAS annual fundraiser, and additional gifts. "The six recipients selected are amazingly talented individuals whose applications, resumes, letters of recommendation and video submissions strongly display their dedication to the field of fine arts,” said Renee Hollingsworth, Vice President, Community Outreach. “They excel in both their scholastic and artistic performances, as well as having strong leadership skills indicative of turning an artistic passion into a successful career." The scholarship recipients for 2018 will be joining the SAS Scholarship Alumni group, becoming eligible for ongoing financial support as they continue their studies in the arts, Hollingsworth said. Students awarded scholarships: Lake Travis Alaska Coombes will major in music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. A talented singer, Coombes participated in choir, theatre, dance and art, earning superior ratings all three years of regional and state competitions and meriting leadership positions in choir. She is a member of the MadCavs, an elite madrigal ensemble. Avery Goodwin will major in songwriting at Belmont University, Nashville. She performed with the Lake Travis Fiddlers, an “old-Texas” style swing music ensemble, recording with Asleep at the Wheel, in addition to active membership with the LTHS Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.
choir and other musical ensembles. She co-founded Echo’s Edge, with all band members writing and performing original music. David Hellrung plans to attend the University of Texas, majoring in music performance. A French horn player, David was part of the LTHS Wind Ensemble, the Lake Travis marching band, the Texas Youth Wind Symphony, the Texas Ambassadors of Music, and other performance groups and is an Eagle Scout. Marble Falls Karoline Westerman will study music therapy at Oklahoma Christian University, Oklahoma City. A top choir member, she has performed in ten musicals, beginning at age six. She leads children’s music at Fellowship Baptist Church in Marble Falls. She’s a member of the National Honor Society and is an MFHS cheerleader. Sydney Kelley will major in radiotelevision-film at the University of North Texas. She plays tenor sax and oboe, has acted and performed in MFHS musicals, served as band president and worked as an AV technician, in addition to being helping to produce “DPDR,” the highest ranking short film in competition in MFHS history. Noah Reily will attend Tarleton State University, majoring in music. He plays trumpet, drums, piano, and electric and jazz guitar and is a member of the Marble Falls marching band, varsity jazz band, symphonic band, and winter drumline. He’s been a section leader and taken top ratings in regional and state competitions, besides holding down a job and volunteering. Spicewood - August 2018
