Around Lakeway Lakeway’s Heritage Trail Tour to Travel Back in Time
Lakeway, LTFR Offering Free Wildfire Assessments to Homeowners News of California’s raging wildfires have lit a fire under wildfire mitigation specialist Chris Rea to sign Lakeway residents up for free home ignition zone assessments.
Courtesy of City of Lakeway Reserve your seat on the next Heritage Trail Tour on Sept. 14. The free bus tours are scheduled to leave at 9:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. from the Lakeway Heritage Center, 963 Lohmans Crossing. Lakeway Heritage Commission members will guide each tour that lasts about one hour and 15 minutes. The first Heritage Trail Tour celebrated Lakeway’s Golden Anniversary in 2013, and since then docents have informed and entertained more than 800 participants with facts and humorous anecdotes from the history of Lakeway and Lake Travis area. Some Heritage Trail Tour highlights are: Blocker House #1: Lee Blocker was one of the three Houston businessmen who founded and developed Lakeway. Blocker, the only one of the trio to reside here, built three homes on Sailfish street, and each one boasted a beautiful view of Lake Travis. He and his wife, Jean, built Blocker #1 in 1964. Subsequently, the Blockers decided they needed a larger home and built #2 just across the street. Later still, they saw the need for an even larger home and built #3 next to #2. Riding Stables and Air Park: Rugged land was the terrain at the time of the original Lakeway development. Goats inhabited the site of the original riding stables adjacent to the Lakeway Airpark. In the 1970s, Lakeway residents could fly their planes into the airpark, walk across the runway and rent a horse for a ride through the rugged trails. Live Oak Golf Course: Learn how the 1965 drought aided construction of the golf course by exposing the tons of fertile soil used by developers to build Live Oak’s fairways. Years later, U.S. Col. Roy Duran, a former World War II POW and Lakeway resident, initiated a 50-flag ceremony on July 4, 1976, to celebrate the U.S. Bicentennial. A parade of golf carts carried the flags up the first fairway at Live Oak to honor each state. The Parade of Flags remains a tradition of every Lakeway Fourth of July celebration. Admission is free for the Heritage Trail Tour, but bus seating is limited and reservations are required. Reserve a seat on the Heritage Tour now by calling the Lakeway Heritage Center at 512-608-9533 or emailing history@lakeway-tx.gov. Be sure to include name, phone number and email address. 4

Experiments, models, and post-fire studies have shown homes under threat from wildfire ignite due to the condition of the home, and everything around it, about 100-plus feet from the foundation. This radius is the home ignition zone.
“As we can see from what is happening in the western United States, especially California, wildfires are getting larger and more damaging to lives and homes,” Rea said. “It makes me concerned for folks living in Travis County, which is one of the fastest growing places in the United States with an extreme wildfire risk in many areas. Homeowners need to act now to prepare for the worst.” Rea is the new wildfire mitigation specialist with Lake Travis Fire Rescue. As part of his primary role of working with the City of Lakeway to make the community more resilient to wildfire, he offers free home ignition zone assessments to homeowners in Lakeway and highly encourages every homeowner to participate in one. According to a recent article in the Austin American-Statesmen, nearly 900 wildfires have occurred in Texas in 2018. Texas is on pace for the worst wildfire season since 2011, the year that Steiner Ranch, Spicewood, and Bastrop Complex wildfires occurred. These wildfires were devastating to many homeowners that lost everything. “The time to act is now before we see a wildfire here in our backyard,” Rea said. Preparing for wildfire involves common sense practices that most people just don’t think about regularly, Rea explains. Little things like cleaning out gutters, screening vents, and altering landscapes around homes can make a significant impact on whether or not a home will remain standing after a fire. “When it comes to wildfire these days, given current forest conditions with large amounts of fuel, diverse topography, and weather patterns putting us in drought, it is not a matter of if but rather when a wildfire will occur,” Rea said. For a free wildfire assessment, contact Rea at 512-645-5840 or crea@ltfr.org. Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.

Around Lakeway Extend Winning Streak at Lakeway Community Blood Drive Fresh off a record-setting turnout at their last event, Lakeway Community Blood Drive organizers are pumped up to get more donors to the next drive from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. The July 21 blood drive set a record for the most people coming out to donate. Ninety-five prospective donors came through the doors, more than at any other event in the 10-year history of the blood drives. “Sept. 15 will provide the opportunity to build momentum and keep the streak going – maybe even set another record,” blood drive coordinator Todd Buikema said.
The We Are Blood website also includes useful information regarding eligibility and answers to other frequently asked questions. To be eligible, donors need to be in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh 115 pounds or more for whole blood donations. Photo identification is required. Organizers recommend that donors eat a good meal and drink plenty of liquids before donating.

Around Lakeway Lakeway to Lock Up Crime on National Night Out Join your neighbors in learning how to prevent crime and in supporting the Lakeway Police Department at the annual National Night Out on Oct. 2. From 4-7:30 p.m., residents in neighborhoods throughout Lakeway and across the state are asked to lock their doors, turn on their outside lights and spend the evening outdoors with neighbors and police. The national event was in August, but Texas observes National Night Out in October. “We encourage everyone to attend their neighborhood block parties to establish or improve awareness of who lives in their community and what are the crime-related issues in their area,” Lakeway Police Chief Todd Radford said. “We appreciate the level of participation over the years, and we hope the turnout this year is even better.” National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized against crime. Neighbors participate across thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. “Our staff also looks forward to this evening because of the goodwill it fosters among the community and law enforcement,” Radford said. Lakeway residents who register their neighborhood events with the department will be able to work with event coordinator Mike Conley, Lakeway Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association director, to schedule visits from Lakeway police officers from 4-7:30 p.m. that evening.
Lakeway Travis Sister Wives By Laura Rach Lake Travis Sister Wives (LTSW) capped off a great summer with a 1st place win at the City of Lakeway 4th of July parade! We were honored to recognize 5 local organizations with a focus on helping children in our community: The CavLounge, Education Connection, Help PLAY it forward, Lake Travis Education Foundation, and LTlov. In the past year, we have worked to increase our community involvement and visibility with great results and lots of fun along the way! LTSW loves to support our Lakeway Police Foundation (LPF) at various events through the year, including a big presence at Bingo nights and the LPF gala. The Lake Travis Education Foundation (LTEF) is also close to our hearts, and we were pleased to continue our fun annual tradition at the Butterfly Brunch as well as the LTEF gala. In addition to supporting these local organizations, the ladies of LTSW enjoyed our annual wine tasting party, pajama bunco, bowling, lots of live music and dancing, and much laughter and friendship! Aside from the fun, we look for ways to recognize and celebrate each other’s accomplishments and contributions. THE giant, colorful LTSW boot spontaneously arrives in a sister’s yard in recognition of something wonderful they have done for our group or just to say what an amazing person they are! We also post a Spotlight Sister article to celebrate ladies who have made amazing contributions to our community and beyond. We are proud to be part of the Lake Travis community and are grateful for our amazing group of ladies! If you are interested in learning more, check out our Facebook page @LTSisterWives and look for information about upcoming events.
Officers and Lakeway Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association members will visit registered block parties and cookouts to provide informational handouts, giveaways and localized tips for preventing crime. This is a family-friendly event, and participation by all ages is encouraged. Registration is first come first served, so 30-minute time slots are available on a limited basis. Anyone requesting officer visits at other times that evening will be added to a waiting list. To register a block party for a visit, contact Conley by 5 p.m. Sept. 21 at director2@lakewaycpaaa.org with an estimated headcount of adults and children and what time you would like to schedule an officer visit. Those who are interested in registering a block party are encouraged to sign up soon. “We are looking for neighborhood events across the city with the hope of a minimum of 25-30 people attending each party,” Conley said. 8

Lakeway Wildflowers Chorus Celebrates "The Rhythm of Life" On Saturday, October 13, the Lakeway Wildflowers Chorus will present a show celebrating “The Rhythm of Life” at the Lakeway Activity Center. Rhythm pervades our lives in so many ways. Mothers croon lullabies to babies, mimicking the heartbeat felt even before birth. As teens drive down the street, the beat of their music propels them along. Working folks bemoan their frustration, wailing the blues, or express their longing for deliverance in gospel songs. Soldiers march to the beat of the drum, wake to the sound of the bugle playing Reveille, and retire to Taps. The program includes songs with different dancing beats--swing, tango, boogie-woogie, gospel, and rock.
them at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek Drive. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call the LAC, 512-261-1010. Please join us for a toe-tapping, finger-snapping musical evening!
Directed by the talented Adam Poynor, the Wildflowers chorus consists of 35 Lakeway women who sing four-part harmony. We will feature three chorus quartets--the Petal Pushers, the Floral Notes, and Lantana. And we are bringing back our favorite men’s quartet, the Highlights, perennial crowd-pleasers who really know how to “ring those chords.” Also, for the first time on our show, we are excited to have a young women’s quartet from Lake Travis High School, the Belle Tones. Don’t forget the date—Saturday, October 13th. Doors open at 6:30 and the show starts at 7:00. Tickets are $15, and you can get Offering both 1 on 1 and small group (3-5 athletes) wide receiver development training sessions weekly throughout Austin and the surrounding areas. Mission statement: To take what I've learned from playing at both the collegiate and professional level and bridge the gap between what's being taught at the highest level of play to those even as young as 4th grade.

Born and raised in New York, Schneyer moved to Texas after getting married. After years in a busy corporate life, Schneyer retired and began to look at artwork as more than just a hobby. She is the member of several arts organizations including the Austin Pastel Society, Lake Travis Painters, Artitude Au s t i n , a n d the Creative Art Society of Austin. Schneyer has exhibited at the Dougherty Art Center, Austin Bergstrom Airport, and Studio 2 Gallery, among others. Over time, Schneyer’s focus on art has changed in both medium and subject. She has recently started to work in abstracts, creating images that are full of color and movement. “I no longer attempt to duplicate the visions I have of nature, as I realize that it is impossible to duplicate the beauty around us,” said Schneyer. “Instead I have allowed myself the freedom to enjoy the creativity of art. The resulting artwork is more passionate, spontaneous and above all… fun.” For many years Schneyer worked almost exclusively in pastels. And now, even though she considers pastels her “comfort zone,” she has started to use acrylics and mixed media. “I hope the viewer enjoys each piece and sees in each one something that reminds them of the world around us,” said Schneyer. The community is invited to join Denise Schneyer for an artist reception on Sunday, September 23rd from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.

Women's Club of Greater Lakeway Speaking at our first meeting on Monday, September 24, 2018 is Chikage Windler. Chikage is an Emmy Award winning meteorologist who appears on the nightly news weekdays at 5, 6, 6:30 and 10 o’clock on KEYE, which is CBS, Austin. She is our celebrity weather lady and has been named Best TV Personality of 2017 by Austin Magazine. With twenty years experience including guest appearances on ABC’s Good Morning America and World News in NYC, she is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist in the American Meteorological Society and holds the National Weather Association’s Seal of Approval. She graduated magna cum laude in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma. Chikage grew up in the heart of Tornado Alley in Oklahoma and saw first-hand the devastation of multiple tornadoes including the deadly EF-5 (the highest force on the Enhanced Fujita Scale of Tornadoes) that hit her parent’s neighborhood in 2013. Very active in the Austin community, Chikage is an avid runner. She is captain of Team CBS Austin, a group of runners who tackle everything from 5k’s to marathons. She also sits on the board of her college alumni club as well as a cancer support group, serves on UT’s Environmental Science Institute Advisory Committee and volunteers for organizations including Girlstart. Keep Austin Beautiful and Austin Parks Foundation. She is a frequent emcee and attendee at community events across Texas and volunteers her time visiting schools and sharing her love of weather with students from preschool to high school. Chikage is the mother of two girls, Austen and Zailey, and she and her husband Jamie are also parents to an adopted SPCA dog, Skipper One of the questions Chikage gets most often isn’t about weather, but about her name. She is half Japanese and her name means “thousands of views or vistas.”
