SHOTS FOR HOLLY SLATES ANNUAL KICKOFF Flu season is around the corner, and the Shots for Holly crew is gearing up for its busiest time of the year. Founder and president, Dr. Michelle Becker, said the group’s annual kickoff party is slated for Saturday, Sept. 8, at Creekwood Grill, 12710 Telge Road, Cypress, Texas 77429. “We are thrilled to be back at what was The Shack again this year,” she said. “Festivities will start 2 and run till about 5 p.m. We will have Walgreens on-hand to administer the flu shots for us.” A kickoff party might seem odd for flu season, but this is the fifth year the organization has held such an event. “It’s a fun way to remind family, friends and our followers that it is flu season and time to get their annual vaccine,” said Nicole Travis, Shots for Holly treasurer. “We will have a few silent auction items and Chinese raffle items. Proceeds from the auction and raffle will help us cover the cost of flu shots for those in need. “And, our favorite band, SoulShine, will be on-hand to provide the soundtrack for the afternoon.” Most health insurance plans will cover a flu shot, so attendees are encouraged to bring their cards. “In the event someone is uninsured, we will help them get a flu shot,” Mary Hebert, Shots for Holly secretary, said. Flu season, which typically runs September through March, went into May this year. “It was a rough year,” she said. “There were a lot of people who caught the flu multiple times. Doctors even encouraged folks to get a second flu shot.” There were a record number of flu-related hospitalizations, according to the Centers for Disease Control. “More than 30,000 Americans were hospitalized with complications from the flu,” Becker said. “The number of deaths as a result was staggering, too. While the flu shot may not preclude you from getting the flu, it can reduce the length of your illness, as well as lessen the potential for related illnesses, such as pneumonia.” Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.
About Shots for Holly Cy-Fair resident Dr. Michelle Becker and a team of dedicated volunteers started Shots for Holly on Jan. 31, 2014, following the death of a friend. Forty-one-year-old Holly Munsinger succumbed to the flu virus. Once believed to be a virus that affects mostly children and the elderly, the recent flu outbreaks affect all ages. Still, less than 50 percent of the population is vaccinated against the flu virus. Thus, the Shots for Holly team built a multi-purpose platform to raise awareness concerning the dangers of the flu virus, the importance of getting an annual flu vaccine, and provide flu shots to people in need. The Corporation’s mission shall be to educate the general public on the benefits of receiving an annual flu vaccine, dispel the myths inhibiting the receipt of an annual flu vaccine, facilitate the receipt of annual flu vaccinations through charitable means, and provide charitable relief to the families, especially minor children, of persons who have passed away from flu related illnesses. Shots for Holly is a 501(c)(3) charity organization. In 2018, Shots for Holly was named the CyFair Houston Chamber of Commerce’s Nonprofit of the Year.
