A NEWSLETTER FOR THE RESIDENTS OF SPICEWOOD & BRIARCLIFF
VOLUME 2, ISSUE 9
Pickens Fundraiser Sunday, September 9, 2018 Enjoy Spicewood barbeque for the benefit of locals Dick and Nancy Pickens on Sunday, September 9, at One Chapel Lake Travis, 22800 Hwy 71 West, from 9 am – 2 pm. Erin and Steve Schugart, members of One Chapel, will be cooking the food for a two-meal event to raise funds to help defray expenses to combat the cancer that Nancy faces. The food at the event from 9 – 11 am will be breakfast tacos with the usual fillings of eggs, cheese, potatoes, and a selection of smoked meats, combined in a variety of pairings. And from 11 am – 2 pm, smoked brisket, pulled pork, sausage and grilled chicken will be served directly from the smoke pit. Barbeque beans and corn casserole are on the menu as well. After suffering and overcoming breast cancer several years ago, aberrant cancer cells were found recently in Nancy’s blood work. She had to resume treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since Dick is self-employed, the drives to CTCA for care and the treatments themselves will cause undue financial hardship on them. The Bible study group at One Chapel Lake Travis, led by Erin, decided to hold a fundraiser. “Nancy is an amazing woman who has touched many hearts. She gives a lot to the church and the community of Spicewood. She is always helping others and now we can help her,” says Erin Schugart. A wife of 62 years, Nancy is a piano teacher, women's Bible study leader, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and has worked with her husband, Dick for 20 years on radio-TV inspections. Dick is in the radio business, beginning at the age of 10 with his own show which featured Nancy, at age 8, as a pianist. A licensed radio engineer since 1964, he graduated from The University of Texas in Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.
1967, and received a Masters of Divinity degree in 1970. He has worked as a radio/TV inspector for the FCC and Texas Association of Broadcasters for the last 40 years, managed a communications company from 1976-1982, and lectured at the UT College of Communications in the 80’s. “We have been blessed by so many prayers, gifts, hugs and food from the large family of One Chapel. When we saw the news about Steve and Erin doing the fundraiser also, Nancy and I just looked at each other and said, ‘Really? Wow!’” says Dick Pickens.
