Grand Lake Estates - December 2018

In 2018 we continued to add additional events and grow our existing events even bigger. The Flags Across GLE is the means to fund a number of the neighborhood social events, while providing a beautiful, patriotic display multiple times a year. This year 132 homes had flags, this was up from 109 in 2017 and a total of 198 flags were flown across GLE that was up from 155 in 2017. With the flag funds, we paid for the flags and 100% of the proceeds went back into the following community events: Easter Eggstravaganza, Ice Cream Socials, Family Fun Day, Patriotic & Proud July 4th Celebration, National Night Out, Turkey Trot, Yard of the Month and the Halloween & Holiday decorating contests. The above events are in addition to the incredibly successful Fall Festival & Cookies with Santa as well as the various groups offered to get to know one another based on personal interests: GLE Playdates, BUNCO, Men’s Poker Night, Book Club, Sign Painting Parties, Cookie Decorating Lessons, Holiday Wreath Classes, GLE Happy Hour and Walking Group. A HUGE SHOUT-OUT to the volunteers who made these events and group possible in 2018: Flag Chair: Laurie Roberts Yard of the Month Chair: Kim Kolenberger Welcome Wagon Chair: Morgan Borths Playdate Co-Chairs: Morgan Borths, Lisa Bishop & Sarah Moyer Easter Eggstravaganza Chair: Holly Yen Ice Cream Social & Turkey Trot Chair: Nikki Martin Patriotic and Proud July 4th Chair: Ali Eichenberg Walking Club Co-Chairs: Kamber McElroy & Lisa Bishop National Night Out Chair: Christi Gryder Movie Night & Fall Festival Chairs: Crystal Ward & Hollis Jackson Book Club & Cookies with Santa Chair: Adriana Swanson GLE Happy Hour Chair: Becky Krider Holiday Wreath Classes: Elaine Schultz Sign Painting Parties: Ashley Vance (welcome signs) & Jessica Blair (wooden trays) Men’s Poker Night: Geoff Goold This is just the beginning of what we can offer in GLE, especially if we have multiple residents involved! The team of volunteers meet once a month to plan events and activities; we welcome anyone who would like to join us. If you have an event or a group you would like to see become a part of Getting Social, all you need to do is get involved! For additional information on how you can be a part of what we are doing, contact Ellen Edwards grandlakesocial@gmail.com (Continued on Page 3) Copyright © 2018 Peel, Inc.

JJ WATT LIVES WITH US By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center Did you know that JJ Watt lives with us at our wildlife center on Hammerly Boulevard in H o u s t o n ? No w you didn’t think I was actually talking about the football player for the Texans, did you? JJ is our bullsnake. We named him JJ Watt because when we got him, he was exactly the same height at JJ, the football player. Our JJ has continued to grow so now he would be a bit taller than the human JJ Watt. JJ, the bullsnake, is one of our Animal Ambassadors and is a man about town. He goes to community events, schools and was recently on TV. He’s a real star! We use him to educate the public about snakes. Usually, the first reaction we get from people is fear and there’s a big misconception about how snakes feel. No, they are not slimy. By the time we finish talking to people about JJ and how valuable he is to the environment, they feel better about snakes.

The December 2018 Yard of the Month is the home of Roy and Bonnie Jolibois located at 11542 Lauren’s Way. The Jolibois’s moved to GLE in October of 2017 from the Bentwater community. They chose Grand Lake Estates because of the large lots, friendly neighbors and to have their custom home built to their liking. Their landscaping consists of several crepe myrtles, beautiful vitex, and white oak trees. Many oleanders highlight the front elevation of their home along with foxtail ferns and lots of Mexican heather. Bonnie spends several hours every day maintaining the yard. She also mows, edges, and removes the grass clippings herself once a week. She enjoys doing the yard work for the exercise benefits and because it provides her the kind of serenity she needs to keep centered. Roy’s Zen activities include hitting the links at GLE’s golf course and an occasional game of pool in his man cave complete with TV, surround sound, and disco lighting. The Jolibois’s favorite part of their yard is the large open space which allows them to enjoy all the beauty the area has to offer. Congratulations Roy and Bonnie and thank you for helping make Grand Lake Estates a wonderful place to live. 4

Grand Lake Estates - December 2018

Bullsnakes are fairly common throughout the United States and are probably best known for their ability to mimic the dreaded rattlesnake. This ability to mimic a rattler is used when the bullsnake feels threatened. They can mimic the rattler’s behavior, the markings are very similar, and they are about the same size. When threatened, a rattlesnake will shake its tail before it strikes. You will actually hear the tail rattle. You may hear a similar sound from a bullsnake. It’s either making the sound with its mouth, vibrating its tail or moving leaves around with its tail, or you may hear nothing at all. The rattlesnake raises its tail when threatened but the bullsnake keeps its tail low to the ground. Bullsnakes have narrow heads and rattlesnakes have triangular heads that are wider than their body. The diet of a bullsnake is comprised mainly of rodents but they also eat small rabbits, gophers, frogs, lizards and birds. It will use its mouth to grab its prey and will slowly constrict it. The prey dies due to lack of oxygen and the snake eats it whole. If you’d like us to bring JJ Watt and our other Animal Ambassadors to your school, company or event, contact Victoria at education@ twrcwildlifecenter.org for pricing. You’ll get to meet Iris, the screech owl and Beatrix, the opossum along with our box turtles. It’s fun and educational, too. Grand Lake Estates BOOKLICE Booklice are given their name because they are often found among books or papers. They are small, soft-bodied insects that are pale in color. Usually booklice are wingless. The head and abdomen are large, while the middle section (thorax) is narrow. Booklice have long, thread-like antennae. Nymphs, or immatures, look similar to adults but are smaller and always lack wings. Booklice have chewing mouthparts and often feed on mold and fungi but have also been found to feed upon pollen, cereal, dead insect parts, or paste and glues in book bindings. They can be found indoors in areas such as libraries, office spaces, areas with many cardboard boxes or any other area that may contain large quantities of paper. In homes they may infest pantry items such as flour, cereals, grits or grains. They thrive in areas that are damp or have high humidity.

FABULOUS FUDGE INGREDIENTS • 2 1/4 cups sugar • ¾ cup evaporated milk (1 small can) • 16 large marshmallows (or 1 cup marshmallow crème) • ¼ cup butter or margarine • ¼ teaspoon salt • 6-oz pkg semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1 cup chopped pecans • 1 tsp vanilla DIRECTIONS 1. In a heavy 2-quart saucepan, mix sugar, milk, marshmallows, butter and salt. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat to a boil (mixture will be bubbling all over the top). Boil and stir for 5 minutes more. Remove from heat. 2. Stir in completely melted chocolate chips, pecans and vanilla. 3. Beat until it is almost ready to harden. Spread in a buttered 8-inch pan. 4. Cut into pieces.

Christmas Punch

There are no male booklice; females produce offspring parthenogenetically (from unfertilized eggs). Females can lay up to 60 eggs during their lifetime. The life cycle– egg to adult– takes about 1-2 months (sometimes longer) depending on environmental conditions. Cast skins and fecal material from large populations of booklice may cause the sensation of being bitten by insects for some people. Tips for managing booklice: •

Lower humidity using heaters, fans, dehumidifiers

Vacuum up any accumulated debris that collects in the structure

Discard infested food items or freeze at 0 degrees for 7 days

Repair plumbing leaks & eliminate standing water

Install a vapor barrier in crawl space area (if not on slab) & make sure crawl space has a good cross-flow of air

Seal cracks & crevices around the outside of the structure
