From The Editor's Desk January has already come and gone, but 2019 still offers us somewhat of the illusion of newness and clean slates—we still have the chance to do things differently and with more attention to purpose. Speaking of purpose, you are going to enjoy reading about how Sidney Bateman, Hoop Diving/Chinese Poles Acrobat, with Cirque du Soleil overcame all odds by focusing on his innate talent and ultimate purpose in life. Read a little further, and you will be introduced to Ryan and Lexi two of our adorable Fairfield residents. Next, you will be inspired to keep on dreaming and scheming like 94-year old Sam Roccaforte. Not only did he recently make his 4th skydive, in honor of Geroge Bush, he is also responsible for planning the next Day Trip for 45 Fairfield Seniors of Cypress who will venture over to the visit the Houston Police Department Mounted Patrol Stables and the HPD K-9 Unit. In addition to following the activities of our churches, schools and community organizations, check out Team Nichols. As you know, we are following Andrew as he makes a bid for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2019 Student of the Year. In closing, I'm hoping that you celebrate Valentines Day remembering it isn't just for lovers but also for showing kindness and consideration to friends, family, colleagues, and people who care about you. Try to make this Valentines Day your most memorable one ever. Lastly, when you hear of a good human-interest story or catch someone "doing good, contact me. Those are my favorite kinds of stories, they brighten everyone’s day. You can reach me a jackiedevine@peeolinc.om or at 832.316.6006.

Join the Circus and the World is Your Oyster! by Jackie Devine
Have you ever thought about running away and joining the circus? The truth is, becoming a circus acrobat is not as easy as you think. But if you could accomplish it, your life would be changed by epic proportions. “As a street kid growing up in a St. Louis innercity Black neighborhood, never venturing from the two-block area where I lived, the only thing I knew about life was what I saw around me” commented Sidney Bateman, Hoop Diving and Chinese Poles acrobat. “Left motherless at three; I was raised by my grandmother and never knew my dad. I had seven siblings and with little supervision, it was more or less every man for himself. I don’t know that I ever felt a real sense of family. To make matters worse, I was a hyper kid, craved attention, and frequently sought approval and acceptance from the gang. Looking back on it, you might say I grew up in a combat zone. The sound of gunshots, sirens blaring, and having friends and family members shot or killed were all regular occurrences." Toys, bikes, and athletic equipment were a scarce commodity for Sidney. For recreation, the kids in the Walnut Park community where he lived, would gather on vacant barren lots and have flip-offs competing against one another by flipping, spinning, and doing acrobatics. “I joined Circus Harmony when I was eleven, even though I had one foot in the door of joining the gang. I honestly can’t tell you when I joined the gang," he confessed. "My brothers and uncles were gang members. I thought that was in my future as well. But miraculously, Circus kept nudging me. For a time, I was pulled in both directions, Circus and the gang. I was always trying to balance out the two." For those that have never heard of St. Louis-based Circus Harmony, it is a social circus-based program that uses circus arts to motivate social change. They do it by building character in individuals and building bridges between communities. Titles and labels are nonexistent. The only thing that matters is what they (the individual) bring to the ring. From the beginning, learning to trust and be part of a team were hard lessons for Sidney to grasp. Working with others was a struggle. Having Copyright © 2019 Peel, Inc.
someone telling him what to do and dealing with accountability felt like insurmountable challenges. He suffered from bouts where he just gave up and dropped out. “But, somehow, even though young and naïve, I began to develop a degree of trust and make sense of acrobatics. The sport became my magnet drawing me back into the program. Somehow, I recognized that my talent could take me somewhere. Circus classes became my escape from the harsh reality I was dealing with at home and in the neighborhood. Unknowingly, using circus arts with a definite intention, I began my journey. "In my junior year of high school, I got into a huge gang fight at school and was expelled. Then my friend got shot and killed. That was my turning point. I knew I didn’t want to be another statistic." Musing on the problems he faced, he said, "There had to be a different path for me." Shortly after committing to training more seriously, Sidney joined the Elite Troupe of Circus Harmony; a pre-professional program that was focusing on mastering specific circus disciplines. And, at the end of high school, Sidney decided to make a career out of the circus. (Continued on Page 8) Fairfield Community Gazette - February 2019

Around Fairfield (Continued from Page 7) Believing in his talent, the manager of Circus Harmony helped him to get to Montreal, Canada to audition for the National Circus School. To his surprise, Sidney got accepted in the College Program with a specialization in Hoop Diving. École Nationale de Cirque (ENC) gave him a purpose and hope of international in scope. The ENC is a higher-education institution dedicated to the education and training of professional circus artists, as well as to research and innovation in circus arts and academic curriculum. Sidney proudly emphasized, “Not only could I relate, but I was also willing to give it my all. I trained my butt off. I became a much better human being. After acceptance, I entered into a week-long acrobatic audition process that I've been told was harder to accomplish than getting into Harvard or Yale. On April 1, 2011, I got the news: “I HAD MADE IT.” And that felt like I had arrived home because I knew that was the beginning of something amazing.” Studying at ENC for three years, Sidney was introduced to the world of contemporary circus. He even conquered the French language and became fluent in it. He successfully graduated in 2014 alongside his St. Louis friend Melvin Diggs (also a Circus Harmony alumnus) as a Hoop Diving duo. For two and a half years, the pair took part in the creation and international tour of Cuisines & Confessions, a production of the Montreal-based circus company 7 Fingers. Other career highlights include a summer with the Chicago Midnight Circus, a fashion show for Hermès in Hong Kong, and a collection launch for Bench in Manila. In 2017, Cirque du Soleil got in touch with Sidney and Melvin and invited them to join the cast of LUZIA on tour. Cirque du Soleil, headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada is a Canadian entertainment company and the largest theatrical producer in the world. Reflecting, Sidney smiled, saying, “Now I am finally part of a family where I’ve found a place of love, accountability, and commitment.” Sidney is thrilled to have jumped into this adventure and to have been given the opportunity to share his passion with thousands of people every night through his two favorite circus disciplines: Hoop

Diving & Chinese Poles. Not only does he feel that his ultimate childhood dream has come true, but he has also found his life’s purpose: to share his story with youth around the world and to help the “kids” who need help by inspiring them to work hard toward achieving their goals. When you have the opportunity to see Cirque du Soleil’s LUZIA at the Sam Houston Race Park, be sure to pay special attention when Sidney performs his Hoop Diving and Chinese Poles acrobatics. LUZIA opened in Houston on January 10th, 2019 for a limited engagement through February 24th, 2019.

Fairfield Creek Estates Celebrates Christmas
by Janet Guthrie
Thanks to HEB, the Silver Liners, and the Fairfield Creek Estates (FCE) residents who participated, FCE ushered out 2018 with an unforgettable Christmas Party. HEB made the Christmas dinner possible by contributing two delicious hams. The residents filled in with tasty side-dishes and desserts. The Silver Liners, headed by Choreographer Gwen Ware, provided the entertainment. As part of their production at least ten of the of the performers line danced to Christmas oldies. The best part was when they invited the residents to join them in a few numbers. The event was topped off by a White Elephant Gift Exchange. Residents drew a number out of the hat. Then, the numbers were called in order. The person holding the number went up and chose a gift. The person holding the next number called could take the gift someone else picked, in which case the person who's gift was taken selected again. Typically, White Elephant gifts are unwanted items. But in fact at the FCE party, every gift was a Keeper—making the exchange more fun and enjoyable. Both HEB and Gwen Ware are exceptional Community Neighbors. HEB consistently gives back to community activities, projects, and causes that make a visible and positive difference. Gwen is active in Fairfield teaching water aerobics to Fairfield residents in the summer and Line Dancing to both men and women year round. Thank you H‑E‑B and Silver Liners: Together, great things are possible.

94 Is Just A Number That is what Sam Riccaforte said the day he celebrated his 94th birthday and took the leap for the 4th time at Skydive Spaceland in Alvin, Texas. He was surrounded by a bevy of family, friends and church members, including Jo Ann Lambert and Jackie Devine, coordinator of Fairfield Seniors of Cypress—his traveling buddies, to watch him sail through the air with the exclusive Tandem Progression and Skydiver Training Team, some of the most experienced skydivers in the industry. Not one to sit still, Sam also coordinated the March trip for the Fairfield Seniors of Cypress. Sam arranged for the Seniors to tour state of the art Mounted Patrol and Houston Police K-9 Facilities. The complex is located at Houston Police Department Mounted Patrol Facility, 5005 Little York Rd. Houston, Tx. At present, there are thirty-eight (38) horses in their herd. These

horses represent many different breeds, some of which are: Percheron; Belgium; Quarter Horse; Hanoverian; Tennessee Walker; Dutch Warmblood; Thoroughbred; and Spotted Saddle Horse. There are currently thirty-two (32) police mounts assigned to patrol duty. Each officer is issued one mount and is responsible for the care and wellbeing of the horse. Originating in 1959, the Houston Police Department's K-9 Unit Program is one of the oldest Patrol Divisions on the department. There are currently thirty-nine teams in the K-9 unit which are assigned to various sections throughout the police department. Let Sam be an inspiration to us all for staying active, involved and well connected in Cypress.

Team Nichols
by Andrew Nichols
For those of you who have been following the progress of Team Nichols – made up of team members of eight adults and eight teens (teacher/pastor, Rob’s co-worker, family friends, family members). Progress has been made, and momentum continues to build. Andrew says: "This year, I was honored to be nominated as a candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2019 Student of the Year Campaign." The Student of the Year campaign is a seven-week fundraising competition to raise money to support LLS. The Mission of LLS is to find a cure for blood cancers and improve the quality of life of patients and their families through research, access to drugs, and advocacy. Team Nichols, my fundraising team, and I have high expectations to raise $35,000 with your help and support. We desire to make blood cancer a thing of the past! I am passionate about this campaign because in August 2014, the day before I entered middle school, my mom was diagnosed with a rare form of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (also known as ALL). Her cancer required 2½ years of aggressive treatment at MD Anderson. My mom’s battle with Leukemia deeply affected our family and every aspect of our lives. The only reason my mother is in alive and in remission is due to medical research breakthroughs and her clinical trial drug Ponatinib that she will take every day for the rest of her life. This breakthrough drug has been possible due to the help of LLS funding research. This campaign will help raise funds to pursue more research and develop more ways to save lives like my mom. Best of all, it gives our family and support system a chance to use our unfortunate experience to impact others in a way that offers hope and one day finds a cure for blood cancers!

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA Troops 533 & 1907 FUNDRAISER
Good Shepherd United Methodist Church and Rosehill United Methodist Church
Boy Scouts from Troops 533 and 1907 announce their annual mulch and fertilizer sale – all orders will be delivered right to your door! The Boy Scout motto is “be prepared.” Well, Troops 533 and 1907 have taken that to heart, and for the last several years have run a local mulch/fertilizer sale to earn money to fund each year’s activities and purchase equipment. This year, they are preparing to experience the rugged outdoors at scout camps in Sweeny, Texas and Indiana. Scouts will also be attending Sea Base in the Bahamas. Such ambitious activities would not be possible without the support of the community! In addition to camping, the boys were able to participate in many service projects, including Wreaths Across America, Scouting for Food, Christmas Tree Recycling and completing multiple Eagle projects. Troops 533 and 1907 are gearing up for another great year and wish to extend a thank you to everyone who contributed to all the adventures and learning experiences of years past. So, if you are looking to beautify your landscape and bring your lawn back to life, all while helping your local scouts, then be sure to place your order! This year’s offerings include high quality Living Earth’s red, black, hardwood or pine bark mulch as well as Southwest Fertilizer’s premium or slow release fertilizer and weed n feed fertilizer. For your convenience, Scouts will be selling door to door in your subdivision beginning January 14th. If you are reading this circular and think we may miss you, please order by emailing BoyScoutsTroop533@yahoo.com. All purchases will be delivered to your home by the Scouts on February 23, 2019. Yours in Scouting, Scoutmaster Ryan Dusek (Troop 533) Scoutmaster Chad Gaulding (Troop 1907) Copyright © 2019 Peel, Inc.

Salyards Builder’s Club Gives Back
Our fall semester was indeed the season of service and sharing for the Salyards Builder’s Club. The Books Between Kids campaign proved to be successful putting smiles on the faces of Houston’s at-risk children who received boxes of generous donations of books to build their own home libraries. In November Patricia Hudson from Cy-Fair Helping Hands gave an orientation about service opportunities at her organization. And, December, the Builder’s Club worked with Andrew Nichols in his quest to assist with collecting Toys for Teens Fighting Cancer. In just ten days, Salyards Middle School came together to donate 255 items and over 180 dollars in gift cards. These items will be used for teen cancer patients who spend countless hours and days at the hospital going through treatments and tests. The donations received will go directly to patients affected by cancer in the Houston Medical Center. Our club will also be kicking off another campaign on January 28th when we start a two-week project led by Nichols called Coins for Cancer. If your Salyards student would like to be a part of our club, it is never too late to join us! The Builder’s Club, part of the Kiwanis Club family, is an international service organization promoting the vision to develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service. The Salyards Builder’s Club meets every second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2:40 – 3:30 p.m. and our club sponsors are Carol Siwald (Carol.Siwald@cfisd.net) and Tracey Selmon (Tracey.Selmon@cfisd.net). 16 Fairfield Community Gazette - February 2019
Community of Faith to Host Night to Shine Prom for People with Special Needs Sponsored by Tim Tebow Foundation
Community of Faith announced today that they will serve as one of nearly 500 churches around the world already registered to host Night to Shine 2019, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, simultaneously on Friday, February 8 of next year. Night to Shine is an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with special needs ages 14 and older, hosted by local churches in all 50 states and across the globe all on one night. COF is excited to be a part of this worldwide movement that God is using as a catalyst to change how culture embraces people with special needs and to rally the church worldwide to stand up for those who are differently-abled. Every guest of Night to Shine enters this complimentary event on a red carpet complete with a warm welcome from a friendly crowd and paparazzi. Once inside, guests receive the royal treatment, including hair and makeup stations, shoe shining areas, limousine rides, corsages and boutonnieres, a catered dinner, karaoke, prom favors, a dance floor… all leading up to the moment when each guest is crowned king or queen of the prom. “I am blown away by how we are seeing God use the Church to step into this space as an advocate for people with special needs. It’s not about my foundation or the churches themselves, but about communities coming together to love and celebrate people with differences. Every town, every village, every state, every country needs a Night to Shine for their special needs community – a chance to be a part of something significant and life-changing…and to be blessed in the process,” said Tim Tebow, founder of the Tim Tebow Foundation. As sponsor of Night to Shine, the Tim Tebow Foundation will provide each host church with the official 2019 Night to Shine Planning Manual, the official Night to Shine Prom Kit, complete with decorations and gifts for the guests, and personalized guidance and support from a Tim Tebow Foundation staff member. The foundation also has committed millions of dollars in financial support to hundreds of churches needing assistance in hosting the event. When Night to Shine launched in 2015, 44 host churches and 15,000 volunteers worked together to honor more than 7,000 kings and queens of the prom. This past February, 537 host churches and 175,000 volunteers came together to celebrate 90,000 honored guests with special needs. Now in its fifth anniversary year, the Tim Tebow Foundation is seeing new churches sign up continuously and the event is expected to take place in over 700 locations this coming February. For additional information on the Night to Shine hosted by Community of Faith in Hockley, visit COF.church or on the worldwide movement of Night to Shine, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, visit: http://www.timtebowfoundation.org/index.php/ night-to-shine/ Copyright © 2019 Peel, Inc.
Swenke Elementary Thanks Spring Creek Barbeque for Spirit Night Donations! Swenke families and friends ate in style at Spring Creek Barbeque in January raising funds for their school. Spring Creek Barbeque is a long-time contributor to Cy-Fair ISD schools. Spirit Night fundraisers help schools fund new equipment, books, and many other teaching resources helping students throughout the district succeed both in and out of the classroom. Swenke’s Snow Leopards want to also thank the teachers who came out and served hot rolls to the many patrons at this two-night event and their mascot, Blizzard, making an appearance to the delight of all. Thank you! Cub Scouts Recycle The Swenke Elementary PTO is the chartering organization of the Cub Scouts Pack 33. David Pfeffer, Cubmaster, and Reid Henry, Pack Chairman, lead a group of 27 volunteers and about 80 scouts at Swenke. One of the initiatives where Cub Scouts give back to the community is through recycling. Each Friday you’ll see a den of scouts at Swenke going through the halls with parent volunteer, Amy Burns, collecting recycling from each of the classrooms. George Burns and his family take every bag collected to the recycling dumpster at Good Shepard right here in Fairfield. This commitment is commonplace for the Burns family. This is their last year at Swenke and they will all be missed. February Happenings Happy Valentine’s Day! February at Swenke will be filled with the 100th day of school, mix it up lunches, Mother/Son and Father/Daughter dances, Kids Heart Challenge, Benchmark testing, 2nd grade garden days and more! Keep an eye out for ways to volunteer at events at Swenkepto.org. Don’t miss another PTO happening, deadline, or school activity! Sign up for the Swenke PTO Remind using the code below to receive quick messages and reminders to any device. To sign up, text @ swenkepto to 81010. Copyright © 2019 Peel, Inc.
