Point Hope You may have heard of DELILAH, the famous radio host of a nationally syndicated radio show with over 8 million listeners every night. Delilah is also an author--her latest, recently released, book is called “One Heart At A Time”. Another passion of Delilah’s is the charity she founded in May of 2005: POINT HOPE. Point Hope believes every child deserves a safe and happy life. Their goal is to be the “Voice for Forgotten Children” across the globe. That includes the 463,000+ American Children in foster care here in the US, which is why “Points of Hope” Chapters are being established in local communities across America. (Point Hope also continues to do a lot of work with refugee and impoverished children in West Africa.) Delilah believes one person can change the world, one heart at a time--she’s seen it happen through a special event. Point Hope began this event in the U.S. called the “Point Hope Teenista”, which is a day of pampering and mentoring for young ladies in the foster care system. She is encouraging other women to host a Point Hope Teenista in their community. Faye Batson, Debbie Woods and Susan Benefield, among other inspiring women, have worked to set-up a “Points of Hope Austin Chapter” and they are launching their first “Teenista” event on February 10th, 2019. What better time than Valentine’s to initiate such an event, dedicated to pampering and loving on these deserving girls, many of whom don’t see themselves as lovable due to their circumstances. There is no better time to encourage young women to love themselves than Valentine’s Season! A local foster-care nonprofit, Austin Angels, is partnering with Points of Hope Austin for this amazing event by bringing together twenty young women in foster care for a special day of beauty and encouragement! Austin Angels’ mission is to walk alongside children in the foster care system, as well as their caretakers, by offering consistent support through intentional giving, relationship building and (Continued on Page 4) Copyright © 2019 Peel, Inc.

Around Lakeway (Continued from Page 3) mentorship. Together, these two groups plan to bring a day of joy to the lives of several lovely ladies! A day for them to remember! The community of Lakeway, and the surrounding area, has been instrumental in getting this off the ground. It could not be done without everyone’s support and help! The day will kick off with Deer Run Chauffeur Service picking up the twenty young ladies in the Austin area. They will be chaperoned to Ringlets and Sass Hair Salon, as well as Lakeway Salon. The owners have graciously opened their businesses up to many enthused hair and make-up artists, all in the name of self-care, beautification, and love for these precious girls. After getting thoroughly pampered, they will set out to find a new outfit at Marshall’s, for their “Star Stunning” photo session at the Hills Country Club. Professional photographer Lisa Wolniewitz, Valentina Pardi-MacGregor and Ashlee Carroll will be standing by to receive the delightful ladies on their arrival. After their modeling session, a sit-down dinner will be served. Three speakers, Edith “Edie” Henry, Kelly Henry, and Crystal Olenbush will inspire and motivate these young girls. Singer/ songwriter Candy Coburn is also scheduled to entertain. Cake will be provided from the city’s premiere pastry chef Christy Duffell Seguin at “Cakes ROCK”, and the final icing on the cake is all the contributions from various sponsors: Facial5 Dermacare is donating Kendra Scott jewelry, luggage bags provided by Austin Angels, Tote bags by Dr. Sheila Barbarino, and Michael O’Rourke (famous hair stylist and founder of BIG SEXY HAIR) is gifting 20 of his “ROCK YOUR HAIR” blow dryers! Everyone with the Points of Hope Austin Chapter is proud to say, “Our community and friends from around the country have blown us away with their love, support, and generosity, all in the hope of changing “One Heart At A Time.” (Find out more and get involved by contacting the Points of Hope Austin Chapter at their FaceBook page: fb.me/PointsofHopeAustinChapter)
Council gives Rough Hollow citizens right to vote on ESD Should the Travis County Commissioners Court call for an election, about 150 property owners in a portion of Rough Hollow will have the right to vote to decide whether they want be included in a new emergency services district. At its regular meeting Jan. 22, Lakeway City Council passed a resolution consenting to the creation of what would become Travis County Emergency Services District No. 16, subject to voter approval. The new district would be an overlay that would assess up to 10 cents per $100 property valuation to help fund emergency medical services within the boundaries of Travis County Emergency Services District No. 8, which petitioned Lakeway City Council to adopt the resolution. The council’s action does not form the district. Creation of the new district is contingent upon voter approval if Travis County calls the election for qualified voters within the boundaries of the proposed district.

Sweetwater Residents Driven to Create a Safer Highway 71
LAKEWAY DEALS
E X C L U S I V E T O L A K E WAY R E S I D E N T S
White ribbons wrapped on trees and streets around the Sweetwater neighborhood during November served as a reminder of the tragic loss of a beloved resident. In late October, his vehicle was struck by a truck that crossed into his lane just east of the Pedernales Summit Parkway intersection, marking yet another fatality on Highway 71. Members of the newly mobilized Safer 71 organization want to ensure this tragedy is not in vain. Safer71 is a non-profit comprised of residents of Sweetwater and surrounding neighborhoods. The group aims to achieve a zero-fatality road corridor on SH71 between Southwest Parkway and the Blanco County Line. This stretch of highway has seen 20 auto-collision deaths and 128 serious injuries since 2014. Seven of these fatalities occurred in 2018 alone and collisions are on the rise from previous years. With many subdivisions far from their full build-out, multiple new schools approved for construction, new sports facilities in the works, and commercial developments springing up along Highway 71, this stretch of road will continue to see an increase in population and traffic. Without safety improvements to SH71 and a change in how people drive along it, the next accident is just waiting to happen. Working with municipal and county governments, traffic jurisdictions, and local neighborhoods, Safer 71 aims to provide the necessary research, advocacy and outreach programs to ensure that SH71 becomes a road that people can feel safe driving on every day. Their charter focuses on a comprehensive approach to the problems: Engineering, Enforcement and Education. Safer71 asks that you join the effort by supporting, promoting or volunteering with its efforts. Visit www.safer71.org to learn more, stay informed on how you can help create a safer community for all residents and travelers on Highway 71.

Around Lakeway Citizen Advocates for Animals (CAFA) and Wildlife Advisory committee (WAC) in the News There is action in the works with CAFA and WAC. The most recent WAC meeting was led by Warren Bluntzer, the wildlife biologist hired by Lakeway. His presentation included available options for deer management. More information on this topic will be continued at the Feb. WAC mtg. at City Hall. A committee is forming with four volunteers to research the many sign options available to implement in Lakeway to lower the deer/ vehicle accidents. Some options have already been presented to WAC by CAFA. The committee will work to present its best ideas on appropriate signs in Lakeway. The latest figures show the deer population to be stable, but the goal presently is to lower accidents involving wildlife. CAFA also presented the Wildlife Advisory Committee with information about human tragedies (injuries and deaths) that occurred as a result of wrought iron fencing with spikes above the top horizonal bar. A three-year old boy in Georgetown died due to being stuck between the spikes on his fence. Also, our local deer have been impaled many times on these spikes as the deer attempted to jump the fence. WAC has agreed to the need to address the code regarding any
new fencing that would disallow the spikes on the fences. Residents who have the spiked fencing can use several options to make their fencing safer, including the removal of the spikes, having a fence company form a channel that is welded over the spikes, leaving a clean horizontal bar. There is ongoing work being done to make Lakeway a safer place for animals and people. Updates will follow with the progress we are hoping for.

Lakeway history series serves up tennis talk at library The Lakeway Heritage Committee’s history series continues with a free presentation about the World of Tennis and the city’s tennis history at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Lake Travis Community Library, 1938 Lohmans Crossing. Cliff Drysdale, top world-ranked tennis professional during the 1960s and ’70s and the World of Tennis’ first touring pro, will share his insights into this exciting time in Lakeway’s history. In 1970, Dallas real estate developer Robert Alpert purchased the Lakeway Company. Alpert’s vision included adding a “worldclass tennis facility” to the Lakeway Inn, which is now the Lakeway Resort and Spa. Alpert’s partnership with Lamar Hunt and Al Hill Jr. created the World of Tennis in 1972, home to the World Championship Tennis (WCT) professional tour. “We are pleased to be working with Cliff Drysdale and Lake Travis Community Library to bring this part of the city’s history to the public,” said Bill Hawkins, Lakeway Heritage Committee member. “Come meet the pro who was instrumental in putting Lakeway on the tennis map.” An additional installment in this series is set for March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Lake Travis Community Library. For information, contact the Lakeway Heritage Center at 512608-9533 or history@lakeway-tx.gov.
