Love is the Mission Sarah Simmons, MD, MPh Missions and Community Outreach

from sex trafficking and providing education and job training leading to a bright future. In Burundi, one of the poorest countries of the world, CoF has fostered hope for the Batwa people. Only seven years later, economic development through micro-finance loans, a health clinic, and an elementary school have led to a thriving community with hope for continued growth. CoF is an integral support for these partners in the long term. For our volunteers, the variety of opportunities allows everyone to be able to do something. Whether it is prayer, a day of service, or donations, everyone has the chance to connect and help to make a difference. These missions are complex issues, and there are no easy answers, but we believe that these partnerships are the first steps to change. CoF is living faith through loving our neighbors. Love is the mission. Our work is about sharing the love of God as friends, encouragers, learners, and humble servants. You are always welcome to join Community of Faith every Saturday at 6 pm and Sundays at 9:30 and 11:30 am. Come as you are. We would love to get you connected with our neighbors!

When Mark and Laura Shook returned from the mission field in 2003, they established Community of Faith as a missional based church committed to serving the world. Sixteen years later, Community of Faith continues to stay true to that commitment. They have established long term partnerships with organizations making a difference around the globe and right here in our own community. The church supports local partners who tackle some of the most significant issues in our world. Our partners are experts in areas including human trafficking, education, homelessness, foster care, and community development. The support CoF provides depends on the needs of the organizations. We follow the lead of our partners. They best understand what works and what doesn’t. There is never a one-size-fits-all approach. In local elementary schools, CoF connects class readers and mentors to students who might need some additional encouragement. At the Mission of Yahweh, CoF celebrates homeless women who have successfully completed their program and are moving into their own home. At Tomball pregnancy center, CoF helped to replace floors. This project allows them to move forward with a brand new sexually transmitted infection testing program. At the Landing, CoF volunteers regularly connect with women trapped in the sex trafficking industry to share friendship, support, and job skills. Right now, the missions team is spotlighting foster care. We are holding informational sessions with CPS, babysitter certification classes, and diaper collections for new families. CoF doesn’t just work locally. We walk with partners all over the world in places like Costa Rica and the Philippines. In India, our partners at Changing Destiny and Rescue Pink focus on rescuing young children Copyright Š 2019 Peel, Inc.

Keeping Our Trees Healthy By Eric & Alisha Senior I would like to bring to your attention important information that will be beneficial to all Fairfield residences regarding healthy tree care and maintenance. We don't want to lose our precious trees to something that is in our control. I am currently nursing two trees back to health that may still not survive because I have been piling mulch too high up which kills it over time due to girdling roots:

Identify the problem – it probably has a mulch volcano Despite the fact that everyone from homeowners to professional landscapers does it, mulching your tree so that the mulch covers the lower part of the trunk is a bad idea. You should be able to see the root flare, the point where the tree flares out to its main roots. And those large, main roots should be visible at the surface of the soil, or just an inch or two below it. Mulch zones around new trees and shrubs are extremely helpful in protecting the young plant from mowers, string trimmers and other threats. However, mulch zones are often applied incorrectly, and actually contribute to the decline of the tree or shrub. The most commonly seen example of this is termed a "mulch volcano." A mulch volcano occurs when mulch is applied too deep and pushed up against the trunk of the tree. Mulch volcanoes can kill by: Girdling Roots. If mulch is piled around the trunk, the roots will start to grow into it. These roots will then grow around the trunk in the mulch. As the root grows thicker, it pushes against the trunk, which is also increasing in size. These roots will eventually strangle the trunk and cause eventual death. Onset of Disease & Decay. Mulch piled against a tree trunk traps unnecessary moisture and decaying organic material against the bark. This often leads to the onset of disease and decay around base of trunk which prevents food and energy from traveling up and down the tree. It also creates an ideal environment for fungal and canker development in the trunk, leading to eventual death. Remove the mulch volcano to expose the roots: Find problem roots: Trees that are planted too deeply or are mulched too high are prone to girdling roots. Adventitious roots 10 Fairfield Community Gazette - June 2019

form above the main root structure wherever the trunk is covered by soil (or mulch). Those roots grow upward. Once they hit air, they turn and start growing around the trunk, encircling it. As the tree grows in diameter, it eventually hits the girdling root, which compresses the tree trunk. As a result, nutrients can’t flow correctly from leaves to roots and back, and the tree may also become unstable. Stem girdling leads to a decline in the tree’s health and an early death for the tree. Remove adventitious and girdling roots Using pruners, loppers, and saws, we removed any roots above the main root structure. When we ran into a particularly large girdling root that had grafted itself to other roots, we sawed through the root in a few places instead of trying to remove it completely. Compare the photos above and below to see the difference. This is how the base of the tree should look: Mulch tree correctly Mulch should not cover the main roots or the root flare. Instead, we used the mulch to form a flat ring several inches away from the trunk. By making the sides of the ring sloped, we direct any rainwater that falls towards the roots. And don’t worry; those exposed roots will form bark in short order. We can now see in Fairfield that the community trees have finally been uncovered by our community landscaping service just like the article says and the trees are healthy. Many folks pile mulch up for the clean look but I can testify that this practice can harm the trees. We are solely concerned that others in the neighborhood who don't know the harm this mulch practice does and will suffer tree loss down the line. We need to see the base roots at the natural dirt line just like in nature. As you drive around the neighborhood with this knowledge, you will now see just how many folks are piling up the mulch "volcano style" and setting up the long term problem. Yard of the Month Submitted by Deborah Worley, Yard of the Month Chairperson Spring is in full bloom here in Fairfield. This month we visited One fourth of Fairfield South. The areas included: Summer Gate, Winding Trails, Lake Crest, Villaggio Sul Lago and Lake Point. The month of June features the home of Jaime and Ana Valdez. Their home is located at 21507 Amber Grain Lane, in the Villaggio Sul Lago subdivision. Jaime and Ana have taken great pride and planning with their yard. Ana pointed out that they have two sons who influenced blue shades in their flower choices and the rich blue shade of their pots around the front entrance of their home. Every planting border is professionally designed to complement their home with stacked stone and decorative stately walkways. Every shrub is well planned and trimmed to create a balance of green shades. The planning of their shrubs is in different shapes and heights to add continued interest and texture. Their yard isn’t over powered by trees. When I was there, the Magnolia tree was in full bloom. They have beautifully sculptured Italian Cypress trees flanking each side of the covered entryway. Within that front entryway are several deep royal blue pots filled with brightly colored geraniums in various shades of red. To the right of their main entrances you will see a dedicated area of red Knockout Roses. All this beautiful red and blue feels very patriotic to me. I love it. As you walk down their steps towards the street you will see Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima). I know these beautiful flowers invite butterflies and smell very sweet. All the planting beds were like a blanket of Purple and Lavender color. It was rich and elegant and the color shouted Spring to me. Congratulations Jaime and Ana Valdez on your beautiful June Yard of the Month 2019.

Well, first of all, it’s the food, aside from that its the location seating, service, reasonable prices and the ambiance. Of course, you’ll find all that at Andy’s Kitchen. However, the reason it’s become one of the favorite watering holes for locals is that it offers you a chance to take a step back, relax, and feel like you’re part of the home team. “Nothing compares to the feeling you get,” explains Felix Castellano one of Andy’s frequent patrons, “when you walk into a place, and the owner comes out and calls you by your first name and greats you with a smile. It makes you feel good. You're Never Too Old To Dance by Gwendolyn Ware

Each year approximately 1000 seniors from around the country gather for a Health Festival held at different venues from around the country. This year the Health Festival was held at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Houston, 1200 Louisiana. The Garden Oaks Church of Christ was the sponsor of the event that began Thursday May 2nd through Sunday, May 5th. Over a hundred attendees were present at the demonstration. The Silver Liners were asked to perform and show that one is never too old to get up and dance! Opportunity was given for the attendees to learn several line dances! A large number enthusiastically filled the dance floor! A great time was had by all!

Thank you Board Members!! A special thank you goes to the PTO Board members this year, we are so grateful for all you do (most of it behind the scenes). 18 Superior Ratings Submitted by Kellen Kocurek, Band Booster President Congratulations to the Bridgeland High School Wind Symphony, Symphonic Winds, and Symphonic Band! All three bands received Division I (Superior) ratings from all judges at UIL Concert and Sight-reading. Each group prepared and performed three pieces for the judges in the Concert portion of the UIL contest. All three bands received Division One (Superior) Ratings from all three judges. Then they competed in Sight-reading, where they have approximately 10 minutes to look over a piece that they have never seen or performed. The director provides instructions, but the students cannot play any notes. Then they perform for the judges. Again, all three bands received Division One (Superior) ratings from all three judges. That’s three bands, 18 judges’ ratings, and 18 highest scores. This competition culminated a very successful year for BHS. In Marching season, the band was the class champion at the Bands of America Houston Regional, was Grand Champion and

class champion at the Battle at the Berry, received a Division One (Superior) rating at UIL, and advanced to Area competition finishing 12th. The color guard finished 3rd at the TCGC State Championships this spring after winning numerous competitions along the way. In their first year, the Indoor Percussion finished 10th at the TCGC State Percussion Championships after starting the season setting a state record for the highest score ever in their class in their debut performance. Bridgeland is in its second year after opening for the 201718 school year. The school consists of juniors, sophomores, and (Continued on Page 24)

Amazing Bridgeland HS Video Goes Viral!

For over two weeks, the audio/video students at Bridgeland High School (9 kids total) worked with the whole school on a video assignment to make a lip dub mash-up. They got permission from Weezer to use their cover of “Take On Me” and clubs/teams re-enacted over 25 iconic scenes from 80s movies while lip syncing the song. The kids did all the work, from the planning, to filming, directing, editing, and then distribution. The clubs/teams did their own costuming and props. The parade scene was a blast to film because the kids were so into it. Since Bridgeland is a new school they didn’t have prom or homecoming, but they did have this: a coming together of kids who love movies and wanted to be a part of something bigger than themselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zlj17fcuvPs&t=7s
