"MUSIC IS AN OUTBURST OF THE SOUL..." ~ Frederick Delius

Parkinson’s has touched our family (due to Agent Orange exposure during military service) so learning as much about the brain is a top priority. Much was learned during a recent Parkinson’s symposium and what we are going to chat about today is the benefit of music on the brain. *Music is a tool to enhance movement. *Dopamine is released when listening to music. This happens when anticipating and expecting parts of a familiar song. *Singing yourself a song while walking may improve walking quality in people with Parkinson’s disease. The Brain * Likes repetition. * Enjoys finding patterns and nuance in a beloved song. * Likes music that is not too perfect (otherwise it is boring). * Gets surges of dopamine during the building up of a moving song that leads to a release then releasing even more dopamine.

Here Are A Few Recommended Songs For Dopamine Release…..Houston’s Parkinson’s Society Let’s Twist Again……..Chubby Checker Tutti Frutti…………….…Little Richard Great Balls of Fire…….Jerry Lee Lewis Jailhouse Rock……….…Elvis Presley Fly Me to The Moon…Frank Sinatra I Got Rhythm…………...Sarah Vaughan We Will Rock You…….Queen Recommended Books: How Music Can Make You Better…. Indre Viskontas, PhD This Is Your Brain on Music….Daniel Levitin Musicophillia: Tales of Music and the Brain…Oliver Sacks You Tube…TEDx Talks..”Your Brain on Music”..Allan Harvey ‘Perception to Pleasure: How Music Changes the Brain”..Robert Zatorre. Shall we challenge ourselves to listen to more music “which impacts brain function and human behavior, including reducing stress, pain and symptoms of depression as well as improving cognitive and motor skills.”? Let’s Keep A Song In Our Hearts! Donna Konopka

HELP XMAS COMMITTEE

DESSERTS NEEDED FOR 6TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS ON THE LAKE EVENT

The Christmas Committee is in dire need of HELP! Each year the Christmas Committee decorates the family pool grounds and hosts our annual Christmas on the Lake event. We will be decorating on Friday, November 22nd at 9am and continuing if needed on Saturday morning, November 23rd. We are asking you to give us a few hours of your time. Come in your work clothes and lend a hand in making our neighborhood festive for the holiday season. We are also in need of volunteers during the Christmas on the Lake event, Saturday, December 7th from 4pm to 8pm. We start about 1pm and need help setting up tables etc. If you can volunteer for an hour or more to help with children's activities, serve food or assist with the silent auction, it would be greatly appreciated. Please text Terry Buckner at (832) 803-9214 or email terry214@live.com and advise which area you would like to be of assistance.

We are asking residents to provide desserts for our 6th Annual Christmas on the Lake event. If you can contribute a homemade treat, please contact Lynn Collins at lynn.collins@garygreene.com.
